A Comparison of Dak to Derek Carr

And Carr's rookie year was bad. Carr has better offensive weapons than Dak from my perspective, and you should agree if I have read all your anti-Dez posts correctly. And with Free at RT, I'd argue Oakland had a better pass blocking line than Dallas. And while Witten is a first ballot HOF for sure, he's not even in the top 10 receiving TEs right now. Dallas certainly runs better, but Oaklands receiving corp is superior to Dallas. Even with a better receiving corps, Carr wasn't as good as Dak, even if we just talk last year.

When you have a devastating run game that can pulverize a defense and grind the clock down to nothing, it makes playing QB so much easier. Dak only had to keep the bus on the road, which he did brilliantly, and make a play here and there.

Carr has a decent set of weapons, but he has to make all the throws and all the plays. His run game comes and goes. It's all on him.

Dak will experience much more of that this year. The book is out, and teams can see what the Giants, Eagles, and Vikings did to make him uncomfortable and ineffective. He's working on that right now, no doubt. We'll see how the battle ensues next year.

But Carr is on the verge of true elite-level play. He's ready. Dak is 2-3 years away most likely.

Contract number not included in this.

If you look at what the article said.

Carr still tries to throw the ball into bad sport.
Dak does not.

While arm strength will get you some completions.
Reading the play and getting a plus most times is better.

This is where Dak is better. Right from the start.

If having a devastating run game made playing QB all that much easier, teams with devastating running games would win at a higher rate than teams that don't have them. There's no getting around the fact that your QBs need to be effective in the passing game for you to win football games.

And Dak beat the Eagles and Vikings. What those teams did that others did not is get pressure with their down linemen and match up in single coverage on Dez. That's not a book most teams can take advantage of, fortunately.

What those teams did was force Dak to stay in the pocket, while loading up on the run game. Dak is far more dangerous when he gets outside, and not very effective on 5 and 7 step drops from the pocket. That should be all he's working on this offseason because the book is out.

And very few teams have a run game like Dallas. That's a dinosaur from the past, although some teams seem to be building back to that style again.

Erod is one of those butt hurt Romo fans, just like a few others out there. They hate it that their paper hero never did **** so they're going to destroy any QB that comes in. Who cares?
and you are one of the butthurt Romo haters so you really ought to stop throwing rocks in the glass house you live in

It definitely wasn't. But then, Carr's rookie season wasn't comparable to Dak's either. I think the comparison is for today.

Derek Carr is a very good QB at this point. But I can't imagine not waiting to see how Dak might develop by his third or fourth season in the league. He ought to get a lot better if he keeps working like he did last season. He's got a chance to be an all-time great.
An all-time great after one season is a bridge too far for me. A) one season. B) I don't think he's that talented.

I hope the kid shows out again and proves me wrong. I'm rooting for him.

To be clear, I said 'he's got a chance to be.' I wouldn't suggest he's an all time great based off of his rookie year, of course. But it was one of the best years for a rookie QB in history. Basically, he just needs to follow a normal development curve from here to have a chance. That qualifies has having a shot at it in my book.

I hope he proves you wrong, too. I agree he's not special in a lot of ways, but the game does seem to slow down for him and he makes good decisions. That's probably the most important quality a QB can have at this level.

Dak is a fine young QB.

But I would trade him for Derek Carr in a second.

So would every GM in the NFL.
I'd say that's bold talk for a one eyed fat man. Sorry, I just had to throw one of my favorite John Wayne movie quotes out there.

Not really. He beat PHI on that rollout in OT, and he broke containment a couple of times in the MIN game to keep the chains moving.

Dak's effective throwing from the pocket, and he's effective on the move or when he runs the ball. He's just effective. Teams that can get pressure with four down linemen give every QB trouble, and that's what MIN, NYFG, and PHI all do to varying degrees. And if you have a guy like Xavier Rhodes who can handle Dez on his own and your DTs can clog the inside running lanes, it makes it awfully tough on a QB to move the ball.

EDIT: to your point, though, Dak actually underperformed the average QB ratings for those defenses v. the Eagles and in both Giants games. That first PHI game was the one where he played really poorly up until OT. He played really efficiently in the MIN game, though. Outperforming their average QB rating by a mile.

Most importantly his intangibles are off the chart and that's the one thing all the great QBs have in common.

That Philly game was weird. Dak had about 80 yards passing midway through the 4th quarter before the Eagles stopped running the ball down our throats for some odd reason.

Dak wasn't good in the Minnesota game. He only completed 12 passes for 139 yards, while Bradford completed 32 passes for 247. Not sure how that's outperforming him by a mile.

I think idgit meant that Dak's QB rating vs Minn was above the average QB rating that their defense allowed in 2016. Not that he outperformed Bradford.

What Bradford did against the Dallas pass defense has zero to do with Dak and his performance against the Minn defense.

How about the second game of the season (second pro game of his career mind you) where the run game was far from dominant and Dak went 22/30 for almost 300 yards and a W?

What about the game vs the Ravens? Zeke was basically shut down..about as well as you can shut him down..and Dak carries the offense to the victory...over 300 yards and 3 tds..countless number of big third down conversions through the air

Dak started in the regular season because the two quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart were injured. He didn't get the minicamp and training camp first team repetitions.

He didn't get the attention given to the starter from the offensive coaches. He didn't get an offensive gameplan at the beginning of the season that maximized his abilities, the team was still figuring out what they had in him whereas Carr already had two seasons of familiarity.Dak didn't get two years of NFL starting experience before the start of the season.

Dak didn't get the job as the designated starter, the plan had always been to bench him as soon as Romo was healthy. He didn't get bookend 1000 yard receivers.

Dak Prescott didn't go into the 2016 season coming off a 2015 Pro Bowl season. We are comparing the performances of a pro bowler versus a rookie. Yet Dak wins.

Interesting how they left out the part where Dak scored six TD's running the ball and Carr hasn't run for a TD in 3 seasons.

I wouldn't trade Dak for Carr, I wouldn't trade Dak for any other quarterback in NFL history. We know what those guys did. None of them did what Dak did in their rookie years.
