A Draft Tidbit I Heard

‘Tis the season of lies and rumors for the NFL Draft. Every day leading up to May 8th, you will hear that a team likes this player, doesn’t like another and so on. And looking back at these whispers, they rarely hold any weight. But some in fact, do. This week, I heard a rumor from someone close to the Cowboys organization about a potential draft pick come May. What I heard was that the Cowboys have heavy interest in Virginia tackle Morgan Moses, who could possibly be a selection for the team in the second round. The Cowboys officially met with Moses at the Senior Bowl and that is when my ears first perked up. So this rumor and the possible interest isn’t coming out of nowhere.

Another note that was given to me is that the Dallas front office loves taking the highest rated player at a position if possible. I know that seems like a given and a pretty obvious statement, but it make sense. Look at the some of their last few drafts:

2010: WR Dez Bryant
2011: LT Tyron Smith
2012: CB Morris Claiborne
2013: C Travis Frederick

If they believe he is the best RT in the draft, then I wouldn't be against it in the second.

NFL teams strongly disagree. He is a hot prospect now who could sneak his way into the late first round.

When it is all said and done, the law of supply and demand will probably make Moses a first round selection. Probably to a OT needy team like the Raiders, Rams, Panthers or Seahawks.

Right now, he and Brandon Thomas are fighting it out for the fifth best OT available, especially since people are doubting Kouandijo's health. He's better than Tiny Richardson by a mile.

I think 16 is too high, and I doubt we are inclined to take a player we cannot automatically plug in. Moses is not going to be a guard.

I'll buy that. I don't know if he's any good or not but the replacement for D.Free has to be found this year.

Scout Inc.'s Kevin Weidl calls Virginia T Morgan Moses a "giant with impressive feet and lateral agility."
And Moses has already proven that he can neutralize top DE prospects, as the analyst notes. "Moses did a heck of a job against Jeremiah Attaouchu (who I'm fairly high on)," Weidl wrote. Moses will go between the late-first and early-second round. Mar 25 - 8:30 PM

So apparently the hope is you can dupe the Browns out of 26 and 35 for a 1 and 4 to get Dee Ford and Morgan Moses?

It's an option. Their first four picks could look like this:

1st: Dee Ford

2nd: Morgan Moses

2nd: WR (Davante Adams/Jordan Matthews)

3rd: Telvin Smith (Will McClay wants a ton of speed on defense)

I'll buy that. I don't know if he's any good or not but the replacement for D.Free has to be found this year.

If that is the thought process, you could easily take Martin if available, replace Leary for a year and move him when Free goes away.

Again, I just do not see this team being that aggressive with a first round choice to take a player and not really have an idea if he can start immediately.

Not a big fan of Dee Ford but I could live with that draft.

He is very high cut. He is not going to play inside. Uses his long arms to great advantage. Slow feet and those long legs make the shuffle he needs to do problematic. Heavy feet which show up on his combine results:

20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.95
3-Cone Drill: 7.93

as opposed to Martin's:

20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.59
3-Cone Drill: 7.65

Plus Martin is much more polished in his technique and awareness. Moses shows zero aptitude on the second level for example. I would take this guy in the second but Martin is a much much better prospect. In this case it's not close.

They would take Moses in the 2nd, not the 1st.

That would be fine with me. I see at least three of those guys contributing heavily their rookie year. BTW Chip Kelly is supposedly very high on Jordan Matthews.

If so, then the Cowboys need to trade up, and get Donald. And I don't like Moses, even in the 2nd.
