Some bits and pieces from the game.
NBC does an excellent job of giving the coaches angle on most of their instant replays so today I finally am somewhat over the loss and decided to rewatch the game.
I'll start out with Romo's 3 picks.
I won't discuss the Jason Witten kick ball because there is no reason to. It was just luck.
On the other 2 I noticed something.
When Romo makes both of those throws it looks like both of them were premeditated throws.
On the pick 6 he looks left and then decides to come back right and without even really looking at the coverage he just throws it and its taken to the house.
Same thing with the deep pass picked by Phillips. He looks left and see's nothing so then without even really looking he just launches it deep.
Also on that play Hurd could have made a better effort to tackle Phillips. When I slowed the tape down he looks a Phillips about a second before the ball gets to him and we could have stopped them at the 4.
On almost every play Romo scans the entire field and on the 2 interceptions he just made a quick decision and didn't look at the type of coverage he was throwing into.
Now im going to contradict myself and talk about a play where Collinsworth just thought he would take a shot at Roy Williams.
It was 3rd down, I can't really remember the distance, and Romo had Witten in the Slot and Roy on the Outside. Same thing on the Right side except Bennett and Crayton.
Well Romo stares down the left side of the field the entire play and the Corner who was guarding Roy was going to give up the outside but he just kept reading Romo's eyes and then recognized where Romo was going with the ball and got himself in position to make a play.
All this while Bennett was on the right side open in the flats.
No biggy though. It happens. But it wasn't on Roy Williams like Collinsworth would have you believe.
I'd like to throw 1 quick comment in about our RB's. All 3 of them are excellent at making the cutback. Defenses better stay honest when defending our running game because all 3 of those guys have an incredible ability to start out 1 direction and quickly cutback the other way.
Defense
Run Defense was good. I'll leave it at that.
Something I picked up by watching Jenkins and Scandrick play. Both bit on double moves in that game.
Jenkins loves to look at the QB and Eli and Steve Smith faked him out a couple of times. Once when Eli pump faked Jenkins bit on it and the receiver just went into his second move and got open.
He has to play the receiver and not buy into what the QB is looking at.
Scandrick got beat on it too over the middle but without the pump fake.
Both guys though did a good job at covering when the receivers ran just a normal route.
We have to get more aggresive when guarding teams slot receivers. A lot of times they have an option route and what ever type of release they get at the line is where they are going to run their route.
Defending the slant. Under no circumstances should these guys give up their inside when we bring heat up the middle. Just don't do it.
1 more thing. Our safeties and LB's got froze quite a bit when the Giants play actioned.
I can understand the linebackers freezing but that shouldn't happen to our safeties like that.
Hamlin gave up a big play down the middle of the field when we were in cover 4 because he just stared into the backfield. Scandrick got beat because of it.
