A Little Formation To Get You Excited

Jerry just gave an OC the keys to a Lambo. We'll see if our OC is a 16 year old highschool novice driver or Helio Castroneves.

Great post.

Someone mentioned going 2 TE/1 WR instead. Here's something I've been mentally toying with for awhile.

What if we used a wishbone type of personnel group... Barber, Felix, AND Choice. Plus Witten and Bennett.

That's right, no WRs.

The TEs line up tight...

...........80-76-63-65-70-75-82
.........................9

..................23..........28
........................24

Here's where it gets interesting. We can either run out of this formation, depending on the personnel group/look Romo sees from the D, OR... we shift... and the formation now looks like this...

....80.....76-63-65-70-75-82........28
.....................9

............................23
.....................24

And we're back in a "standard" 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE look which we should easily be able to pass or run out of.

The versatility of guys like Felix, Witten, and Bennett gives us so many options.

The options are endless with this offense my friend..Can't wait! We have the pieces to be a well oiled machinee

in all seriousness though I'm excited. Very excited. Haven't been this excited about a Cowboys season in a long time.

a legitimate head coach would get me excited.

No, I'd rather Jones coming out of the backfield, not in the slot. I'd rather Stanback to step up or another quick speedy receiver in the slot. That's why I wanted a Terry Glenn type receiver drafted for the last three years. After Stanback, we don't really have a receiver with that ability.

OK ...who in that formation would you pull off the field to put in Stanback? and i believe Hurd and Austin are way ahead of him on the depth chart.....

Stanback.... get that s... outta here

he'll step up alright ..step up onto the trainers table..

Jones going in motion from the backfield to the slot is what makes this such a mismatch. If you yank a back and put a slot receiver in instead, the other team is just going to go to its nickel defense more than likely. No more mismatch.

Serious play Hos. So many permeations. Take MB out and leave Felix in. Put 11 on the left flanked out and MartyB TE2 left. Pre snap move 11 to the LOS and put MartyB in motion to the right flank not split. Flood the zone deep left with 11 on a post right. If no need for protection flair Jones out to the right. He has one LB to beat with Witten up the middle seam deep and MartyB deep or intermediate right. So many ways to get Felix in the open ala TD in the past. Or as a decoy.

Wouldn't the defense be playing nickel? I'm not sure that either Barber or Jones would be a very good lead blocker, so the D would probably want five DBs, no?

For instance the Skins have a defensive formation called Cobra where 3 safeties are on the field.

A defensive coordinator will automatically order his defense into the nickel after seeing two wide receivers, a tight end and two running backs (in the backfield)? An offensive coordinator would run practically all day on that call.

Maybe you missed the part when Hos called a running play out of that formation (with only one back in the backfield). Another DB on the field would only weaken the run defense.

It may be that #19 is actually in instead of 84. That would make the FS decision a little tougher.

I liked that little play we were running against Philly when we would have Felix run a reverse and Romo would either give it to Barber or give it to Felix.
