A Minor Comparison

Team 1...380 yards of Offense
Team 2...308 yards of Offense

Team 1...24 first downs
Team 2...18 first downs

Team 1...5 of 13 on 3rd down
Team 2...3 of 11 on 3rd down

Team 1...34:03 time of possession
Team 2...33:43 time of possession

Team 1 should have scored 14 points, a holding penalty negated it.

Team 2 did score 14 points and is considered the best Offense in the NFL with the best Offensive mind in the NFL.

Both teams played teams whose defenses are their strengths.

What is the main difference here? There are two. Emotional attachment and too many penalties from our team.

On the penalty front Rex Ryan, a great disciplinary type coach we have been told, his team committed 14 penalties for 125 yards last night.

Morale of this story...don't jump off the ledge after week 1. Hell don't even climb out on the ledge yet.

Team 1, years of mistakes and penalties that go on and on. Only over come at times by great talent.

I sure would like to see some plan in place to cut down on the mistakes and penalties, but I keep waiting.

The key to any plan, is to isolate why the penalties and mistakes keep on happening, I haven't seen that as of yet.

What do you think causes us to be one of the most penalized team year after year and make glaring mistakes ?

I yearn to think of what this team COULD BE, if these issues were solved.

Heck, no one love this team more than I, they mistakes and penalties just get old year after year with no clear plan that is working to cut down on them.

Im not advocating that.

Line us up next sunday against anybody, and i will take us.

Team 2 never had a season worth crap until last year. I am amazed at how much leniency they suddenly have. The weather must be pleasant in Nawlins.

Team 2 also had back to back losing seasons with their offensive mastermind headcoach and all star quarterback before breaking out in 2009.

Edit: Dang it - Hostile beat me to it!

Because they fixed their issues, wish we would do the same. Got them a super bowl that I want !

We can't after 1 week?

Damn we suck. Glad I put us #32 in my Fives thread.

This is a good thread. There are knee caps flying off all over the place.
I still expect great things from the Cowboys this year.

You're a doctor, got an Ace bandage? My knee hurts.

How sarcastic. You don't see a problem with penalties on this team over the last few years. We don't suck you goombah, but we could be great if those were cut down.

All I'm asking is why is this, why do we sit up near the top in this category for the last few years ? Lets find out why and fix it.

Is that really too much to ask ?

I think Garrett's game plan was very good heading into the game. In hindsight, it's shocking that we moved the ball so well given that we really weren't running the offense.

Here's what bothers me. Opening drive, we get just to the edge of field goal range:

2-3-DAL 49 (13:40) 24-M.Barber right tackle to WAS 47 for 4 yards (30-L.Landry, 52-R.McIntosh).

1-10-WAS 47 (13:09) 24-M.Barber left tackle to WAS 37 for 10 yards (23-D.Hall).

1-10-WAS 37 (12:31) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 88-D.Bryant to WAS 35 for 2 yards (52-R.McIntosh, 99-A.Carter).

2-8-WAS 35 (11:48) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 88-D.Bryant to WAS 36 for -1 yards (23-D.Hall).

3-9-WAS 36 (11:04) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass incomplete short right to 11-R.Williams (23-D.Hall).

That's just a terrible series after gaining 14 yards on 2 carries prior to reaching the WAS 37.

The next time down:

1-10-WAS 35 (2:55) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short left to 28-F.Jones to WAS 33 for 2 yards (52-R.McIntosh).

2-8-WAS 33 (2:14) 9-T.Romo pass short middle to 24-M.Barber to WAS 34 for -1 yards (31-P.Buchanon).

3-9-WAS 34 (1:30) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 11-R.Williams to WAS 23 for 11 yards (59-L.Fletcher).

Now, we did get the first down and go on to miss the field goal, but I don't understand the reluctance to gain a few yards on the ground to give us a shot at a FG attempt.

The next drive:

1-10-WAS 34 (2:29) PENALTY on DAL-9-T.Romo, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 34 - No Play.

1-15-WAS 39 (2:06) 9-T.Romo pass short left to 24-M.Barber ran ob at WAS 37 for 2 yards (22-C.Rogers).

Two-Minute Warning
2-13-WAS 37 (1:58) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass incomplete short middle to 82-J.Witten.

3-13-WAS 37 (1:54) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass incomplete deep left to 88-D.Bryant.

It's just ridiculous! I know the Cowboys are a passing team, but I can't help but feel that Garrett gets too cute right around the opponent's 35.

The design of the offense is great, it's just a couple of areas that are derailing the scoring.

Interesting study, passing is easier in the middle of the field than down in the red-zone, where the back of the end-zone becomes a 12th defender.

One major elephant in the room. Team 2 won. Team 1 lost. You are what you are in this league. Team 2 is 1-0 and team 1 is 0-1.

Team 1 had a costly turnover and no takeways. Team 2 had no costly turnover and had takeaways.

Team 2 had its worst scoring victory performance in years. Team 1 repeated the same offense issues (high yardage/points ratio) that plagued it all of 2009.

I know you are trying to make everyone feel better and push back the tide of negativity, but there ARE negative trends that are affecting Dallas right now. Unless those trends change at some point this season, we can't expect much more than we've gotten (no real SB run) in 15 years.

Yes, it is ridiculous. And it's something that needs to be corrected.

It's a blatant shortcoming of Jason Garrett's.

And it's something the Cowboys not only know about, it's something they've tried to fix.

When Garrett first arrived, he was 'assisted' by Tony Sparano with regard to the running game.

When Sparano left, the team tried to hire Dan Reeves to help with the running game, we all know how that turned out.

But the team needs to do something to fix the problem because they still have someone coaching half an offense and it's not working out.

I think it IS time to panic about the penalties.

When your the Dallas Cowboys and penalties hurt you so bad season after season its time to get worried.

Im sick of not winning Superbowls because our team can't get out of their own way.

Thanks, some think I'm a chicken little because of this. I really don't give a crap about Sean Payton or any other team, I want to know what the management plans to do about this crap (Penalties and mistakes) that is obviously holding us back.

The standard answer of, we will work harder on this is just not getting the results we need.

Yeah its time to stop passing this off. Read the sig.. The team lacks Focus.

I've had this signature for 2 seasons now going on the 3rd and its the same ole same ole.

The Jets offense was indescribably bad last night. Considering their placement last year, their talent and the hype surrounding them I think it was one of the worst offensive performances I've ever seen. Sometime in the 4th quarter Sanchez completed a pass for 15 yards and a first down and it was only their 5th first down of the game and the biggest yardage gain for them all day. That was a meltdown of epic proportions.

Yeah, it was horrible.

Although they have no were near the talent we have on offense and the Baltimore D is much better than what we faced.

Thats what happens when you have 14 penalties. Im sure Jets fans are blaming it on playcalling today though.
