I think he was trying to fit it in there but made a bad throw.
it was a bad throw. but I also think the play design and personnel were wrong. if you see the play, Cooks runs the middle of the end zone. he should have been running at the back end of the endzone, thus creating more space. his route pulled three players into the same area and allowed the LB to be in the path of the pass. also, instead of cook, it should have been Lamb or Gallup. taller, with better reach. thus you throw to the back of the endzone, high and allow the WR to go get it.
bad play design. followed by bad execution.
also, I took snap shots of the play before the interceptions. three receivers were jammed into the same area on the left (with cook cutting behind the TE). the TE just went to the 2 yard line and sat there as Cook was passing behind him. which didn't force the DB to make a decision. do I follow Cook or do I follow the other receiver. nobody ran to the other end of the endzone, to create space and passing lanes. just a crappy design. Pollard stayed back (around 5 yard line), and because the TE was there right in front of him, it kept the Defenders in the same area, so Pollard wasn't an option really. if the TE would run to the other end of the endzone on the left, he either gets a one-one or Pollard can be an option to go in space against a DB, or force the DB to not follow Cook and allow cook to revise and get to the open space.
with that said, Dak got greedy. he tried to thread a needle. to a 5'10" WR. Dak should have just thrown it high and if cook couldn't get it, it would be out of the back of the endzone. one more chance.
overall, the redzone play designs were pretty bad. same as Jets game. MM has to correct that.
