A smart move to save cap space

and then in 2 years, he will hold out and say he needs to be paid "Market Value." isnt this the way it works... Zach Martin anyone?
To be fair, most NFL players never get a 2nd contract.

Most never play with GTD $$$$

Owners make a killing on the 1st contract.

As the Micah Parsons contract negotiations drag on and on, I am reminded of what a great FO would be doing now. Of course they should have signed Parsons early in the spring because it would have freed up more cap space to sign other impactful players. That ship unfortunately has sailed in this off-season.

But there is still time on a very impactful player they should start negotiations NOW to extend a new contract. He is IMO the second best player on this roster. Extend him now and save future cap space: That player is TYLER SMITH.

Why sign Tyler Smith now? He has another year on his rookie deal. Here are the reasons:
  • By extending him now, they can lock up TS at 2025 prices, saving future money and cap space. What Smith is worth now will be way cheaper than he will demand the next year.
  • Smith just turned 24. Locking him up now ensures he’s here for the duration of his best years.
  • Smith and his agent (like most NFL players and agents) usually like early contract extensions because it protects and guarantees the player a good payday before a potential injury could end a career.
  • Finally - if the Cowboys wait again, it will not only cost more, but further hamstring their cap flexibility in the future.
Tyler Smith is the second most talented player on this team. Getting him extended now would save millions down the road. It makes perfect sense. Which is why it probably won’t happen here.
Makes GM common sense. But Jerry Dumbo GM Jones is the owner, GM, and de facto Head Coach. If sense was common everyone would have it.

Jerry believes he is winning the game that really counts.

Texas demonstrates its economic might and swag, with two NFL teams in the top 10: the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans. The Cowboys, valued at $10.1 billion, lead the list with a staggering $564 million profit, cementing their status as America’s Team — and the world’s most profitable sports franchise.
That's the problem a player can have a great season then lay a complete egg the next. That's why I feel there should just be one year deals all across the board. I KNOW it's not a good idea, but damn many of these big deals can we do and keep getting burned
Just pay them according to their projected future performance and not their past performance.

Negotiate early. If they want more than what they are currently worth, trade them. Seems pretty simple.

owners dont make more because of the 1st contract. All the rules do is determine who gets what. Players on 1st year deals play on the cheap. Players that get the 2nd contract get a payday. BUT, that money saved by getting a player cheap just goes into the pockets of older players, not the owners.

I believe Jerry feels obligated to over pay on a second contract, if the player out performed his first contract. Good GM's don't make this mistake.

so did he overpay Lamb? is he about to overpay Parsons? He overpaid Dak because it was either that, or let Lance become your starter.

Hear ya

But you know the Cowboys.

They will sign Tyler Smith the morning of their opening regular season game in 2026 after he has missed the entire preseason.

This team can't even sign one of their own great players without creating enough distraction to detriment the team and decrease the immediate productivity of that player.

A really smart move is to trade him for picks, and save money. Your not winning anything with the guy, so why keep him?
Are we talking about Dak? Or Micah? Or Lamb? Basically everyone on the 53 would fall into that category

Because of the CBA. Rooks were making too much, so the CBA stepped in and helped limit their contracts so the vets could make more.

Well said. You explained it much better than I did.

total agreement

Why sure they will they drag every contract out and lose cap every time,I don't understand it .
i honestly think good business is not their motivation as much as having their names and cowboys constantly in the news....i think they

have data that shows this approach makes them more money?????????....i dont see how but they drag every contract out????

You think signing Eze is going to intimidate Micah's unknown Agent???

Micah is getting $200M, 90%+ guaranteed and possibly a no trade clause.

Well, Micah. Last year of his deal. Dak and Lamb got paid, so they aren't going anywhere. Lamb is the least of our issues. Micah just seems like he might be expendable for the right price. Timing might be right to move him for future draft capitol.

was this a joke?
No. Where's the dude at when we need him? Too many times he's a non factor. AWOL if you will. But boy howdy, he will go onto his podcast, moan and groan about everything but rarely takes accountability for himself. Love the talent, hate the results . Hate the podcast . So with him, we have allowed teams to pound us into oblivion and he looks invisible. Why then pay him? I'm only being logical, no ax to grind. Love my team, just looking at it big picture, as a business.

Define "NFL players". Pretty much all starting quality NFL players get a 2nd contract, and most get a 3rd.

These guys who never get a 2nd contract are not starters and mostly not good enough to play in the NFL. I don't think they should be used for a standard.
