A Thought on Mr. Bruce Carter

Bruce Carter is more of a SLB. He's not a Tampa 2 WLB.

You don't go from being fairly dominant as a 3-4 ILB to all of a sudden being a bum.

Then its up to him to learn his new role. He is a highly paid professional, he shouldn't need his hand held or his butt kicked to study the new system. I noticed several plays this year where he just seemed to be dogging it out there and not playing through the whistle. If he cant get motivated when the bright lights are on how much work does he put in when they're off?
I'm not saying cut him because he is still relatively cheap but if he stays average the next couple years then has a monster contract year there is no way I would resign the guy.

Isn't he coming up on the last year of his deal? This may be his contract year.

Ive had to eat a lot humble pie from some of my 49er fan buddies claiming that Lee and Carter would emerge and prove to be as talented as Willis and Bowman... Yeah...

Im not sure when his contract is up. I thought second round players got a four year rookie deal. If it is maybe we can at least get a good year from him next year.

Thats what makes him so frustrating. I was right there with you, it was supposed to be the Bruce Lee show this year then one got hurt and one got complacent.

Maybe so, but the motivation stuff concerns me.

Ernie Sims' passion + Bruce Carter's athleticism = Pro Bowl player

Hatcher wasn't the player at 25 that he was at 30. Give him a second year in the same defense and a decent line in front of him and I bet you see a much improved performance.

Right now there is no way I extend him, personally. I haven't seen enough, even in flashes to say that he warrants an extension to stick around, even a Scandrick-esque cheap contract.

Maybe he will turn it around this year. I hope he does - it would be great to be able to keep our own guys around than have to start that search again. However, Vic Beasley is now a 2015 draft prospect. Funny how stuff could kind of work out, huh?

He can be that player in those second gifs. I honestly think a lot of it is scheme. He needs to just be turned loose to play. Too many coverages to worry about as the Will.

So some players mature faster than others? Get outta here.

I have no shortage of things to criticize as far as this team goes, but count me in as someone who thinks Carter will have a bounce-back season in 2014. Dude is just slower than the average player in his grasp of schemes and plays confused/timid because of it. The Cowboys signed Dan Conner in 2012 because they were underwhelmed by Carter's mental grasp of his assignments as a rookie, but he ended up having a great season because he finally figured things out and played with confidence.

No, Sims has plenty of athleticism. He had an official 4.5 forty, but his unofficial time was in the 4.4 range. He had a 41" vert. His bench reps were the same as Carter's. Sim's NFL weight is the same as Sean Lee's and he's built like a rock. The problem with Sims is that he is overly aggressive and does not play smart. It does not matter how big or athletic a LB is if he always commits to the wrong hole in the running game and always bites on play action in the passing game.

Looking at how Carter performed as a 3-4 MLB last year......I'd like to see tried at the strong side/ Durrants side, his mentality seems to be more of a mlb/strong side player.
...............Let Holloman-- a college safety, to see if his instincts are better on the weak side.........he sure picked up the MLB spot quickly this year late, has the speed, flashed big play ability in the pre-season....

With Holloman, Lee and Carter--out LB group would have speed to match up well in todays NFL with the Woodheads/ Shady's etc...........
