Aaron Donald Question

On a couple Bears message boards, Donald is basically the consensus pick...sadly I say, we at CowboysZone might need to start looking for a new consensus pick lol
Fans probably still relate to the Lovie/Marinelli defense. I doubt they know what the current DCoordinator is looking for.

Add NYG too. They just like guys that can get to the qb and figure out how to use them
Marinelli runs a 4-3 under. The Giants run a 4-3 over or balanced 4-3. They tend to prefer bigger DTs.

I'm sure fans miss Lovie and Rod, I'm also sure they know Melton tore an ACL and got arrested last year and is not guaranteed to return and they just signed a 32 year old Ratliff. Not to mention they were close to, if not, dead last in rush defense. They need a DT just as bad as we do. That's fact.

Yes, but that fact does not help us to know how the Bears rate Donald as a fit in their defense.

If they're planning to eventually transition to the 3-4 as some reports speculate, then I don't think they would have a high grade on Donald.

I understand but they are the kind of team that will make exceptions if they think highly enough of a player. Not sure what they think of Donald but I wouldn't count them out.

Chicago is the only team that scares me on Donald. I just have a feeling we are going to have to trade up for him.

Yep, you really never know what any team will do on draft day. I'm just guessing at the probabilities.

Jernigan and Hageman both seem more like typical Gaints DTs. I wouldn't be shocked if they liked Nix also.

I feel like every time there is a player we all have our eye on they get snatched up right in front of us.

If the Cowboys are really sold on a player, then I don't have a problem drafting that player earlier than they're projected. It worked out well with Frederick. In 2009, they could have used some of their multiple later round picks to move up and be assured of getting the 1 player that they really wanted, Max Unger. Seattle traded to a spot a couple of picks in front of them an took him.

On the other hand, this draft is much deeper than the 2009 draft. I think a lot of the 3rd rounders in 2009 would be 7ths if they were in this draft.

Agreed. In 2009 we had 12 or 13 picks. I thought for sure we would bundle and move up and draft 4-5 players. Instead they loaded up on scrubs.

I would not be happy if the Cowboys do that. By draft time, they should have about 5 guys targeted at #16, Donald being among them. If he's there take him. if not grab one of the other 4 guys. If there happens to be 3 or 4 guys they like still around, maybe they can trade down a bit and grab one of them lower. That's the way this should be approached, IMO.

They should not be so fixated on Donald (or anybody else) such that they trade up to get him. There are way too many needs on this team to give up draft picks in order to move up.

I still think that their 2nd screw up after missing on Unger, was not having done proper mental-makeup evaluations on the players they did draft. Brewster and Jason Williams both had the physical ability to play, but Brewster didn't like football and was lazy while Williams couldn't learn the scheme especially coverage concepts.

Scouts for many non 4-3 teams still rave about Donald. Anyone think we couldn't use JJ Watt here in a 4-3??
Really good players are scheme agnostic. Donald could play in any number of ways but it is generally agreed he'd be at his best as a 3T.

He has better technique than any 3T in recent memory (his combo swim/rip against double-teams is an NFL caliber move already) and boasts the best overall combine numbers of any 3T DT ever. PLUS he was the defensive player of the year for CBS and other sports authorities. Then he dominated the Senior Bowl practices and game.

The thought you should try to look for excuses to not select him is stark raving mad.
This guy is the perfect 3T on a team in desperate need of a 3T to set it's defense.

If he is there you take him and do so with bells on.

The Cowboys have spare 7th rounders but other than that they can not move up regardless of the player.

They can't give up 16 and a r3 for even Clowney.
This team is in desperate need of more talented young bodies.

Trestman put that to rest in his recent interview. staying 4-3

I'd be happy with Jernigan...very happy. I would not be happy with Nix.

And the trick with Donald's combine is that now teams may view him as a versatile guy who can play DT or DE in the 4-3 at 385 with 4.6 speed and quickness.

If he lines up as a 4-3 DE, it would be when a team wants to go big on running downs.

Pass rushing as a 4-3 DE would not be a good utilization of Donald's skill. Bending the corner on the outside is a much different skill than shooting gaps as a DT.

please just stop.
donald is about 10x the pass rusher of the Seahawks starting SDE.
lots of good pass rushers have been big, but quick and strong guys who relied on swim moves, rip moves and bull rushes to win without much corner turning including reggie white at 300 pounds who might be the best of all-time.

dallas is considering 285 pound tyrone crawford outside at SDE.
donald is simply a better player who could do that as well.

he happens to be the ideal for a 3T but make no mistake his skillset and bodytype are valuable up and down a DL which is why he so infrequently gets to Dallas in mocks now.

I think this board needs to start looking at other prospects besides just Aaron Donald. There are a lot of quality players that will be available at #16 that we have hardly discussed.

That is because we usually telegraph it.

If they are smart, they do not bring him in for a visit. They should have enough from the Senior Bowl and Combine to make a decision.
