Tests today revealed that potential No. 1 pick Abdul Carter has a stress reaction in his right foot and the Penn State standout will need to decide soon whether to have surgery, sources told ESPN.

“There are mixed opinions on whether he needs surgery, and we will figure that out in the near future,” Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus said Wednesday night in Indianapolis, site of the NFL’s annual scouting combine.

Option 1 for Abdul Carter would be to have the pre-emptive surgery, have a screw inserted in his right foot, and be expected back in eight weeks, Rosenhaus said.

Option 2 for Carter would be to bypass the surgery, conduct his pro day and prove to NFL teams that he doesn’t need it.

Yea but what guarantees his workout will prove this, at least enough to satisfy teams. Now you need the surgery and could miss some training camp.

He should have it done asap. I would question why it's not done already?
No reason for him to waste time testing for scouts. The teams already have him scouted and slotted.
Getting the surgery now means he's ready for the season and that won't effect his draft status. But, if the doesn't have the surgery the uncertainty of it could cause him to drop, a little, probably not far enough for Dallas though.

That is weird to say if he has this surgery all of the sudden he can no longer play as a top player. Of course it has happened hundreds of times and almost always the player returns to normal post injury. I could understand a Jaylon Smith or Willis Mcgahee type injury being in question of a very very top pick, but not this.

A stress fracture is not a reason for a guy to drop that far in the draft. If he is there for the Cowboys you take him and dont over think it. Jameson Williams had an ACL injury and still went 12th overall. If Carter needs surgery he could still get it right after the draft and possibly be ready for camp. If he doesnt need surgery and just some R&R to let it heal naturally thats completely fine too. Even if he has to miss the first month of the season do you pass on a talent like that? Its like saying we need to cut Micah Parsons because hes likely to miss a couple games this year. There are only a few blue chip players coming out this year, you get one if you can.

I'm sure about this Joey........to say he will drop out of the top 10?

Lol, I wish! He and Parsons would be amazing! These two would wreck the NFL. I’m all about Jeanty but if he falls I’m pouncing.

On a side note, all these athletic training places get these guys ready for combine but never even think about an X-ray just in case?

If he starts falling down the draft boards watch Roseman pull some sneaky **** and somehow get him.

Being concerned that a player isn't even in the pros yet and has a stress fracture in his foot and what that might mean for his longevity in the NFL is reasonable. Particularly when you're talking about a top pick in the draft.

It isn't about making him a medical red flag on your board. It's about thinking why take the risk here with that guy when we have other options with players we have rated really high too who don't have this concern?

It's reasonable. Having said that, I still think he'll go high.

You would think his agent would be ahead of this and maybe he was. Do you think he drops out the top 5?

I tend to agree but stress fractures could be a yellow flag. According to Mayo clinic once you have had one, your risk for further stress fractures increases. They can be caused by a variety of things but it could also be the result of a condition. This kid is going to get enhanced scrutiny from team doctors I am sure.
