Rivers wasn't even the second best qb on their team, so that's an excellent trade for the Chargers. As for the Jets, if they keep on, they'll be asked to move down to the NCAA football level. The Chargers know what they have in Rivers by now and the fact that he's had less playing time than Drew Henson says it all.

I really dont think they make that trade, they have no idea how Brees is going to respond next year, so why trade a very good replacement.

Drew Brees has put back to back Pro Bowl caliber years together. What has Phillip Rivers done to prove he's capable of guiding the Chargers to the playoffs in case Brees isn't 100% back? If that's the crux of the Chargers worries, they're better off going getting a Brad Johnson type of proven vet to back up Brees.

This would be a good trade for both teams.

The Chargers basically have to move Rivers.
Injured or not they have chosen Brees.

Like we did with Aikman over Walsh you gotta cut bait after the decision.
Abraham has been a 3-4 guy in the past and excels as a pass rushing OLB.

For the Jets they are bad enough sans Pennington to sell out for a young QB and this way they get to keep all their picks while losing a guy they feel is overrated and moody.

This is one of those rumors that makes so much sense you can basically guarantee it won't happen, lol.

I guess they would move Merriman to a rover spot ( Merriman reminds me so much of a young Wilbur Marshall) and let Phillips and Abraham be the outside guys. If they're looking to get rid of Phillips after this, I would take them up on that offer.

I think New York would have to throw in at least a 2nd round pick. Why trade for a guy that isn't locked into a lockterm contract, will require a big contract, and would probably be a distraction to his current team for the 4th overall pick? San Diego would be better off trading Rivers to a team like Miami for their 1st round pick and then drafting an OLB like Lawson or Carpenter if thats what they really wanted. They could probably trade Rivers to the Saints and get the 2nd overall pick. Why draft Leinhart and Young when you can get Rivers and not eat a signing bonus. This rumor has to be bogus or the Chargers GM must be on crack.

because Abraham gets 10 sacks in average years. He has 53 sacks in 73 career games. That has to be one of the highest per game totals in the NFL.

Add him to Merriman and man they could really rush the passer.

Abraham is not an old guy at all.

Thats true, but would you give up the 4th overall pick for Abraham. Abraham is a great DE, but no way is he worth the 4th overall pick, especially since he isn't even under a long term contract. I think San Diego would be better off trading Rivers for a number 1 pick. They could sign someone like Lawson to a cap friendly contract for 7 years. Why pay big money to a guy that has never played OLB in the pros, when you can pay a moderate contract to someone like Lawson or Carpenter who is much younger and would not command as much money?

What? Drew Brees has played well the last two years, so why would Rivers get playing time? I don't follow your logic on this one. It is not like I am a Rivers fan either. I didn't think that much of him coming out of college, but what you are saying doesn't make sense.

The Chargers are getting the upside of this deal.

A proven pass rusher for an unproven QB... not a good trade.

River's value is only the 4th pick in the draft if you can get a 4th pick in the draft for him today. You don't carry that value with you for the entirity of your career. Akili Smith currently isn't worth the 3rd pick in the draft.

A Charger fan here. I have been keeping up with the 'Boys for the fact that last year in the draft, we both had the same needs and we drafted right behind you, and the same is true in this draft (OL and Safety needs).

Now on to this topic. I do not see this trade happening. Abraham is a great player, but he does not fit our needs. One, he is too small to play DE in the 3-4; second, we have 2nd year play Igor Olshansky and rookie Luis Castillo starting at DE; Third; Not only do we have Steve Foley (who signed an extension this season) opposite Merriman, but we have 2nd year play Shaun Phillips who had 7 sacks playing part-time. To take Abraham would screw with the salary cap at a position that we are already strong in. Foley gave us 10 sacks last year and he was hampered by an abdominal strain this season and we still ended up third or fourth in the NFL in sacks. OLB is not a need for this team. Our front 7 stacks up with any team in the league. We need help in our secondary and A.J. Smith is not known for breaking the bank for some other team's players.

I think that with Brees out for the off-season workouts, this will give Rivers an opportunity to work exclusively with the first team. He will have his opportunity to show whether is the long term answer. The Chargers have already paid out the hugh bonuses and he only makes $650,000 per year and he doesnt reach $1 mil. until 2008. Rivers will not be traded this off-season. Just one person's opinion.

By the way, you guys have a very good forum here. I will continue to post where there is mutual interest in a subject. Good luck in 2006.

Abraham can play both a OLB in a 3-4 and situationally play 4-3 DE. He's Willie McGinnest with more pass rush skills.

Chargers will have parlayed #1 overall into Rivers, sat him 2 years then traded him for Abraham?

Not happening straight up.

Trade Rivers when you don't know if Brees will be the same after shoulder surgery?

I thought he ended up not needing that shoulder surgery.

If New York is so intrested in Rivers, San Diego should demand their 4th overall pick. Rivers was highly touted coming out of college and San Diego will have to take a huge cap hit to trade him. Am I the only one that feels Abraham for Rivers straight up is a bad trade for the Chargers? New York will get a potentially great quarterback and not have to pay a signing bonus. San Diego will have to pay two signing bonuses, Rivers's and Abraham's.

This is nothing new.

It has been making the rumor mill run ever since Schottenheimer took over in New York. I wouldn't hold my breath.

it's been the rumor for awhile now, hell, last offseason I heard it, just this rumor has something that makes it so believable, Schottenheimer moving from the CHargers to be the Jet's OC...
