I think San Diego would be better off trading Rivers for a number 1 pick.

whoever trades a 1st round pick for Phillip RIvers should be shot, I've never seen a 1st round rookie, do squat, and then get traded in turn for a 1st rounder...never

What? Drew Brees has played well the last two years, so why would Rivers get playing time? I don't follow your logic on this one. It is not like I am a Rivers fan either. I didn't think that much of him coming out of college, but what you are saying doesn't make sense.

Here's what I heard. Cleo Lemon was traded to the Dolphins behind Marty's back and he wasn't happy about it. The article seemed to suggest that Marty was higher on Lemon than Rivers. One of the knocks on Rivers is that he can't throw deep(80-90% of his deep passes are incomplete), which means that he's only good in the 15-20 yard range, which means that he can only play on a short field and the prevailing feeling is that NFL defenses will eat him up knowing that he can't threaten them deep and that he is as immobile as Bledsoe at only 24 years of age. This is info I've read on some of his scouting reports and from what I saw at the Senior Bowl. At his Senior Bowl appearance, I observed for myself that he is extremely accurate on short to medium range, but indeed, can't throw deep(Devery Henderson had to stop and wait for the ball, while going up against a db he'd beaten by 10 yards). When Rivers tried to run, it was like watching paint dry. In summation, he is a very limited athlete and the Steelers got lucky that the Chargers took Rivers first.

A Charger fan here. I have been keeping up with the 'Boys for the fact that last year in the draft, we both had the same needs and we drafted right behind you, and the same is true in this draft (OL and Safety needs).

Now on to this topic. I do not see this trade happening. Abraham is a great player, but he does not fit our needs. One, he is too small to play DE in the 3-4; second, we have 2nd year play Igor Olshansky and rookie Luis Castillo starting at DE; Third; Not only do we have Steve Foley (who signed an extension this season) opposite Merriman, but we have 2nd year play Shaun Phillips who had 7 sacks playing part-time. To take Abraham would screw with the salary cap at a position that we are already strong in. Foley gave us 10 sacks last year and he was hampered by an abdominal strain this season and we still ended up third or fourth in the NFL in sacks. OLB is not a need for this team. Our front 7 stacks up with any team in the league. We need help in our secondary and A.J. Smith is not known for breaking the bank for some other team's players.

I think that with Brees out for the off-season workouts, this will give Rivers an opportunity to work exclusively with the first team. He will have his opportunity to show whether is the long term answer. The Chargers have already paid out the hugh bonuses and he only makes $650,000 per year and he doesnt reach $1 mil. until 2008. Rivers will not be traded this off-season. Just one person's opinion.

By the way, you guys have a very good forum here. I will continue to post where there is mutual interest in a subject. Good luck in 2006.

Bay.

I wanted us to take Shawn Merriman and now's he won rookie of the year. What is the prevailing feeling about Merriman up there? Is there is any concerns about character or work ethic? Do you know if the Chargers would have taken Demarcus Ware if we had taken Merriman? Good luck on the upcoming season and congrats on Brees success, he's from my hometown.

It's funny. When he held out of the off-season workouts because of the Chargers insurance clause, half the people wanted the Chargers to trade his rights and the other half said that they were crazy. Since he signed his contract he has been nothing more than amazing, and those who lambasted him do not want to talk about it amymore. The one thing that we saw in training camp (I saw it from the photos since I now live in San Francisco) is that he stayed under Foley's wing. He was trying to absorb everything that he could. He has said all of the right things. He says that he wants to work hard and improve and be the best ever.

On the character issue. I see "Pacman" Jones as having character issues. He was arrested and on probation prior to the draft. Merriman has never had legal problems. He grew up in a terrible situation to where he had to be the man of the house at 12, but a lesser person would have had trouble with the law by now. He looks up to Lavar Arrington and I have seen threads on the 'Boys' message boards of whether or not to try and get Lavar.

On the comment on Cleo Lemon. Yes Marty liked Cleo a lot, but nobody, and I mean nobody thought of Cleo of more than our 3rd stringer. I guess A.J. wanted a veteran as insurance. If Brees were to get hurt and we were moving towards the playoffs, and Rivers wasn't ready, A.J. wanted a veteran versus Cleo who also didn't have any playing experience. Please do not mistake that as Marty liking Cleo over Rivers.

You guys got a great player in Ware. You now need what we needed last year. An OLB to play the stong side over the TE. Foley is our Ware (along with Shaun Phillips; he is good but he doesn't have the upside of Ware), and Merriman is our bookend. The interesting part of last year's draft is you guys took Spears and we took Castillo. However, I really like Canty. That kid is a player.
