Acceptable Substitutes

When a player is negotiating to be resigned (any position) you have to consider lots of factors, including the ability of the player, the percentage of cap that player will use up, etc. But another factor that should be considered in resigning a player should be “what acceptable substitutes” are available and at what cap cost.

Over paying Dak may be a bad idea, but when you look at the acceptable substitutes are available it tends to be somewhat scarce at the QB position.

That’s not the case at WR. If we pay Amari $20m per year he is NOT twice the WR that Parker (Dophins) is who makes half of that. There are always a lot of good receivers available and you can even find a really good one even later on in the draft.

Paying Dak may be a mistake, but the options there ARE limited. The options are not as limited at WR. In fact I think keeping Byron over Cooper might have been a better move.

That all remains to be seen. I’m just saying that Cooper’s leverage is a lot less than Dak has. I would save the cap room, and flip Cooper for picks. Then again I would have done the same thing with Tank.
Cooper is the best fit with Dak (i.e. Precise Route runner). The opposite of a Dez "jump ball" WR.

Cooper might be the best fit for Dak of any WR in the league. Much like Irvin was the perfect fit for Aikman.

Side Note: Romo made Dez rich. Dez would have failed with Aikman. Aikman would have told Jimmy to trade Dez after about 5 minutes...

There's isn't a quarterback in the league that isn't overpaid. However, should Dak go down, say good-bye to the season. Let the hater's cheer for Rush and post us his stats, (including playoffs) at the end of the season. It will be dazzling! :lmao:
Dak isn't overpaid.

Not in any universe is he better. The very best year of Bridgewater's sorry career doesn't compare to Prescott's worst.

But you can't fix stupid.
They are not asking for equal pay either. The Cowboys do not need a $40M QB to operate their system successfully. He just needs to operate within that system, which Teddy can do.

And I don't expect to see them pay anyone anything like that.

Not from what he's done to this point in his career, he can't.

You are right the first year he plays under the tag but after that he either gets what he demands or gets what a 2nd tag would pay him which is near the same.

Not from what he's done to this point in his career, he can't.

You are just a Teddy hater. He filled in great for Brees for 5 games, undefeated. He can successfully operate the Cowboys offense.

But the issue isn't whether Bridgewater is better, it's can he be successful here with this team and coaching staff. I like Dak, and believe he can be a part of getting this team to where it wants to be, but it's ludicrous to think only Dak can do that. Maybe it makes more sense to go with a cheaper, "lesser" QB and devote the difference in money to other team needs and makes the overall team better. The only fly in the ointment with that is this FO has not demonstrated they have the ability to do that. Which is why if I'm Dak, I don't give a home town discount just so this FO can bungle that savings.

He wouldn't have been if the ole Sloth and Party Boy don't both fumble the d*&%m ball!
Your if'ism is funny. It's almost as if you think the Cowboys were the better team that day. This is how being a homer gets you in trouble. You start thinking they were entitled to the win but got cheated.

No homerism at all. They lost the turnover battle 3-1 and there's a high correlation in the NFL between losing the turnover battle and losing the game. They didn't get "cheated" - they gave it away with those 2 turnovers in Saints territory.

On any team when you have 5-6 players are eating up 60% of the salary cap it pretty well limits the quality of the other 45+ players on the roster.

Regardless, Teddy played well enough to not lose the game.

How could you flip cooper for picks when we dont own his rights? He is about to become an unrestricted free agent and then can do whatever he wants.

He won’t become a free agent if you tag him.

It looks to me like Jerry always feels that having and paying his 'Triplets' is the only way to win a championship. Whether they're actually worthy of the costs or not, Jerry does his best to keep that triumvirate in place no matter what.

He's paid his running back already and I expect the other two to get serious bank as well. He's just got to have that trio together no matter what.

I am not for nor against the Elliott signing. He may be the best player on the team. He also may the easiest to obtain an acceptable substitute for.

His cap hit will not, by itsself, be crippling to the team, provided he plays at a high level. He is capable of eating his contract.

Tank is a guy who it is harder to find an acceptable substitute player. On the other hand the scarcity of good players at his position has artificially increased the pay he should have revived. I doubt we won a single game that we would have lost last year without him.

That’s probably not the case with Dak, Zeke, or Amari. The problem I have with Amari is his home/away splits and his fall off the cliff about 2/3 of the way through the year and the drops. He cost a win early with a deflection.

I would have to say I disagree. If Cooper hits the open market he will become instantly the top Free agent. Teams will pay him whatever he wants.
To me he is a higher priority than Dak. I am happy to sign Keenum and then find someone else. Don't go crazy over Dak, let someone else pay him the big money.

Respectfully, I think you are wrong. Dak would be the more important FA by a long shot.
