Fine...but why not package some of the 11 picks you already have and move up 2-3 slots to get him?

Maybe you were trusting your board and your research that he'd be there.
Like you did last year when you didn't panic and move up for Malcolm Kelly. Or like we've done in the past when we've landed players like Witten.

Clearly, we would have come up if we thought it wasn't worth the risk to stay put. It's not like our FO is deal-averse.

At that time, Dallas probably had no idea a team was moving in position to get Unger.

And if Dallas would have given up a pick to move up two spots to get Unger, they would have been criticized by everyone for doing it because everyone would have said "why give up a pick when the guy would have fallen in your lap?"

It's a two-edged sword.

Fail. The teams at #48 and #49 both traded down.

How far did they want to trade - if they didn't want anyone w/ the 52 pick.....

We've heard this song and dance before (i.e. Greg Jennings). If there's no difference between pick #51 and #75 (so I've been told), then there was no need to "lock in" on Unger.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They didn't decide to trade down while Unger was still on the board -- once Unger was gone, then the talent at 51 was virtually identical to 75.

Who would you have drafted at 51 that's significantly better than who'll be there at 75?

The reason to lock in on Unger is because all draft sites had him rated somewhere b/w 30-40 as a prospect. He was a projected first rounder to Pittsburgh in some mocks. Also, he was the third head of the C triumvirate that was highly coveted... there's a big drop-off in value at C after Wood, Mack, and Unger.

I'm with you Hos, our starters are pretty much set and the value in this draft is in the middle rounds. They can use the extra picks to move around and get the players they believe have good value and blue chip players. We won't pick 12 players. they will use them to move up to get who they want or use them to get more picks next year.

I'm fine with today as long as they pick smart football players with high motor and good work ethic tomorrow. Last year's draft gives me a lot of hope in the scouting personnel to find good players.

Not at 51 they weren't.

I could argue either way. I would have traded up for Unger. Loadholt will play in this league and given us depth and a RT down the line. Moala may be too much like Ratliff but... And Kruger will find a way to play in this league.

Still it could turn out fine.

So basically, our season is over because we could not draft Unger?

No, but I think most people are acknowledging that we need some good young OL talent to groom.

48 wasn't traded.

Excuse me. #43 and #49 were both traded. Even if we tried moving up to #43 to get Unger, then we still would have gotten good value. If we can use our picks tomorrow to somehow still get Rashad Johnson, Derrick Williams/Mike Thomas, and Antoine Caldwell then it would still be a good draft IMO.

Over paying for a player makes no sense and hurts the team. Using the 51 pick would have been doing that.

I guess I am, too, though I wanted and expected Dallas to take Unger but Seattle must have known it and traded up to steal him away two picks earlier. I always expected Dallas to draft to its board and I think it will still do that tomorrow.

Maybe the fact that they did?

No, they didn't. The Texans picked at 46.

The Patriots traded UP from 47.

The Broncos picked at 48.

49 was the pick where Seattle traded up to get ahead of us.

Hindsight is 20-20. Seattle had to jump ahead of us to pick him. We didn't know they'd be picking, and even if we had known, who knows if our trade offers would be accepted?

To me, all this says is we were unprepared. If we locked in on Unger, that is fine. However, we should have worked the phones constantly leading up to the pick so that if Unger were selected before our pick, we had a decent valued trade to fall back on. Instead, we lost value for our pick because we scrambled at the last minute to unload the pick.

Same story, different year.

I seem to remember this ame thing happening for the past several years.

Dallas liked Greg Jennings, but didn't make the necessary move to get him.

Then they liked Daryn Colledge and didn't make the needed move to get him either.

And I'm probably missing a few others too.

I saw a team that failed to do what they needed to in order to get the player they wanted (and needed) and then were unprepared when their pick came up.

But I'm sure they'll be high-fiving each other after "outsmarting everybody" and drafting James Casey tomorrow.
