It was ALL backups playing against starters. What did you expect? Martin is under contract. He'll show up when the games start. I don't think he needs a ton of practice at this point in his career.
If he continues to hold out which of these backups would you start week 1?

I dont know how any fan could watch that game regardless of the starters not being in and be comfortable with the OL as it is. Martin needs to be paid. Immediately. I saw literally nothing positive with the line on Saturday.
Totally agree. He is a HOFer that can still dominate. I am shocked this is dragging out.

It's pretty much obvious that our backups are not great on the OL and that was well known before this game and it's absolutely a fact they aren't Zack Martin. But I wouldn't get too worried about a preseason game where it was our 2's against their 1's and then our 3's against their 2's for part of the game. If these guys do have to play (and they will with our injury issues) it will be one or two of them not all 5 at once. I still say we bring in another OL before week 1 and probably after cut down day. If one or two of the backup OL that played this weekend step up and prove to be players then that is all that matters. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks. Stranger things have happened than a back OL proving he can play in this league.

As far as Martin goes I think he will be back and I'm not too worried about him missing preseason reps. If he isn't in camp a week or so before week 1 I will start to be worried. Right now I'm not.

I think he's talking base salaries/cash being paid in just this year.

In that sense, Martin will receive the 4th most cash for OGs in 2023.

EDIT: Looks like I am wrong. Total cash for 2023 would have Martin 5th.
Could be, but that’d be a nonsensical way to rank them. Zach Martin isn’t going to throw a fit when a lower AAV guy gets a new deal just because the first year signing bonus bumped his total calendar-year cash up over ZM’s

Edoga didn't play. Farniok, Richards, Hoffman seem to have a decent game. I'd like to see more from Waletzko. Bass & Bostick are practice squad candidates.

Our backups was going against they're starters. And there was 1 sack on Cooper that the RB totally whiffed on the Blitzer.

After watching the game, I noticed none of the starters were in and they were playing against their starters. I guess some of the fair weathered fans we have around here don't know who our starters are and thought they were the starters.

They are all backups for a reason. I think the left tackle, forgot his name and number and too lazy to look, he did pretty good going against their main edge rusher.

A good agent plays his game from a position of strength and he certainly has one. No way the Cowboys are going into the real season without their best and most consistent player.

Much is being made that he is under contract but in the NFL that's not like real business. There is nothing real beyond the guaranteed part of the contract.

It is amusing that Booger's balk is he has to pay other players. Since when does he have one player that gives a damn about what others are getting paid? Unless it's more that they are getting paid.

Fair weather fans you say?

So why did our backups get destroyed by their backups in the second half? Grier was running for his life.

Backups are there to provide depth. Not be a warm body. Which is what our OL depth looked like. A bunch of warm bodies.

I am on board with an extension for Martin, but I have no idea how much money he actually wants. I do think this will get settled before the season starts but I worry about Martin getting injured when he comes back as so many players do after holding out. If I were Jerry I would get him in camp now since it is going to happen and they both know it.

No backup is going to look like an all-pro future HoF G. Let's not make that comparison.

And the starting line will be Smith, Smith, Biadasz, Martin?, Steele. If they need a replacement G, the best of all those backups will go in but the other 4 guys will still be there. Having to play 1 backup is no a major problem. Playing 2 or 3 becomes a bigger issue, but I think that is true for most teams.

I have a feeling by the time the regular season start, Asim Richards will be the backup G. He looks the part. I hope they put him out there at LG as a starter in the next wo preseason games. I want to see him about better defensive talent.

Martin and Micah are the two best players on this team. They are also anchors for this team. I would prioritize making sure they are good with their contract and in Micah’s case, that’s obviously coming soon.

I'm surprised Jerry dug in so hard on this.
I believe it could have been nipped in the bud before it became an issue.
Extend him, it was highly likely we would have done it next year anyways, when he has the balloon payment due.
Jerry could have sold this as a win/win (like the Hooker deal but even more so), instead he dug in.
We all know how this turns out. Martin will be playing on opening day, with a new deal.

On another note, I wish we took the back up OL positions more seriously.
I totally understand the desire to see if one of the kids steps up, but why sign not a versitile veteran and bring him to camp as an insurance policy?
Peters pleayed pretty well for us last year in a reserve role.
I understand his best days are long past, but he can still play in this league as a reserve.
He can play 4 OL positions, and is like haveing a coach on the field with his experience.
I actually wanted them to sign him last year and bring him to camp as a Tyron insurance policy, which they ended up doing after Tyron went down. But bring him into camp, get him in shape and build rapport with the other OL.
All it would cost in guaranteed cap is a small signing bonus (150K-200K).
If the kids show out and beat him out in camp then great, cut him, but if the kids struggle, you have that proven guy on the bench who can back up 4 positions.
I'd feel a lot better about our OL if we had Peters as a reserve right now.

lol..... Did you watch the niners game against the Raiders? It is amazing how bad their Oline looked with Trey Lance behind center. I have a feeling the lone woul dmagically look a little better with Purdy taking snaps.

Pay Martin? nah....
