After watching the game. Martin needs to be paid now

I am surprised by the amount of bashing that’s going on here. Martin is 32. Still a top G in the league. Arguably the best. Guy is always on the field. High character. Can actually play T in a pinch. His current deal ends next year. He probably has 3-4 years left. The current deal undervalues him by $4-6 MM per. Of course he is going to try to maximize his earnings. Jerry will pay a pot head RB and a CB that refuses to tackle top dollar but balks at Martin. He even payed a lazy, overweight WR big money. It makes zero sense. This team will miss him big time. Especially when the inevitable Smith injury occurs. They have the space. They need to renegotiate with him anyway. Just get the damn deal done so this team can have a shot at it this year. Why in the world do they want this distraction? Jerry and Stephen just can’t get it right. They did so many things well but let stupid things like Martin and the K situation spoil it.

It’s just stupid.
What makes it more questionable is given how they have handled Martin's contract to date with the restructures, they likely have to do something with Martin's cap hit anyway next year (unless they plan on him playing on a $24 million cap hit or they plan on cutting him after this year). So why dig in now? Sure, Jerry probably wanted to deal with Martin next offseason but regardless he's going to have to do something.

So why get stubborn now?

Best interest of the team is Martin as your starting RG. They can extend him and still have cap space to sign other important players.

Jerry is just being stubborn, which he clearly has a history of being. Martin is a $24 million cap hit next year anyway so they are going to have to do something at the end of this season end way, so why dig in now? Because Jerry often just mucks things up.
Just Jerry being stubborn?? I thought Jerry always caves?
Martin is our starting RG... he is being paid well and is under contract. When we are in wk 3 and hes not playing, then come back and talk to me. He has yet to miss a game that has led to Dak getting sacked by the back up.

I dont know how any fan could watch that game regardless of the starters not being in and be comfortable with the OL as it is. Martin needs to be paid. Immediately. I saw literally nothing positive with the line on Saturday.
Dude, it was preseason game 1 with many 3rd string type OL.

I'm sure they planned on extending him, but the only thing that would make waiting reasonable is if it's true that Martin won't actually add years.

I think it's probably Martin being stubborn, more than the organization.

This organization has done nothing for me to given them the benefit of the doubt here. Jerry constantly mucks up things with his ego or belief he's some smart football man. My gut says Jerry is just trying to send a message and being stubborn here.

We could have stuck Martin in there with that group the other day, and still looked like crap. To be fair we were going up against Jacksonville’s starting defense early on.

That's not what he does with contracts. There's no precedent of him not paying a premiere player.

Looks like Jerry agreed with me lol. Martin signed. He didn’t like the “depth” behind him either

Sorry, he ain't Fred Beard. First pro bowl alternate is predicated on people much better than him that bowed out. The pro bowl isn't an indicator of much, and hasn't been for decades since the fans vote.
One player bowed out, Kelce; who almost retired this year.

This whole situation is ridiculous and quite embarrassing for the organization; the contract must be restructured regardless to avoid the huge cap hit next year, so the FO needs to quit posturing and get it done. Martin has been a stalwart on the OL since his rookie year…and as another poster alluded to, Biadasz and Steele will not be the same players without Martin at RG; moreover, there is currently no player on this roster, or available FA capable of stepping in and playing at RG at Martin’s level.
Jerry…put your ego aside and do the right thing…don’t embarrass yourself like you did with Emmitt Smith’s contract renewal. Martin, like Emmitt, is integral to the success of the team.
