What makes it more questionable is given how they have handled Martin's contract to date with the restructures, they likely have to do something with Martin's cap hit anyway next year (unless they plan on him playing on a $24 million cap hit or they plan on cutting him after this year). So why dig in now? Sure, Jerry probably wanted to deal with Martin next offseason but regardless he's going to have to do something.I am surprised by the amount of bashing that’s going on here. Martin is 32. Still a top G in the league. Arguably the best. Guy is always on the field. High character. Can actually play T in a pinch. His current deal ends next year. He probably has 3-4 years left. The current deal undervalues him by $4-6 MM per. Of course he is going to try to maximize his earnings. Jerry will pay a pot head RB and a CB that refuses to tackle top dollar but balks at Martin. He even payed a lazy, overweight WR big money. It makes zero sense. This team will miss him big time. Especially when the inevitable Smith injury occurs. They have the space. They need to renegotiate with him anyway. Just get the damn deal done so this team can have a shot at it this year. Why in the world do they want this distraction? Jerry and Stephen just can’t get it right. They did so many things well but let stupid things like Martin and the K situation spoil it.
It’s just stupid.
So why get stubborn now?
