Let's walk through the scenarios.

1) Cowboys try to keep Romo as a backup. Romo won't accept this, because he doesn't want to be a backup. Result: Romo retires, cap impact is the same for the Cowboys as a trade or cut, the Cowboys get nothing in return.
2) Cowboys try to trade Romo to a dump. Romo won't accept this, because he has nothing to play for but a ring. Result: Romo retires, cap impact is the same for the Cowboys as a trade or cut, the Cowboys get nothing in return.

Lots of people seem to dream about these first two scenarios, but they will never work and have no benefit for the team. Romo will just take his ball and go home, and it will make the Cowboys look bad to take a crap on the guy who was the face of the franchise for nearly a decade.

Ideally you trade him and get something in return. If that's impossible you might as well just release him and let him go where he wants, because you cant MAKE HIM go along with 1) or 2) when he can just retire and give Jerry the finger.

Financially for this team and where we go from here anything but a June 1st cut is a mistake. We free up more cap space and allow Romo to go where he likes. We can use the savings towards defensive help or as someone put in another thread a game changer like Desean Jackson if Williams is not resigning

I'm really going to hate seeing Romo in another teams jersey. I would have loved seeing him win a SB in Dallas, but that is obviously not going to happen. It's a lose / lose situation for both the Cowboys and Romo really. There's a very slim chance Romo gets his SB elsewhere, but his dream was to get it here. It won't mean nearly as much to him as it would have here. If Ware had a choice, I honestly think he would have preferred his SB win here too. But being the star QB here is totally different than Ware's situation. Let's just hope Jerry has learned something from pissing away Romo's career. Quit wasting time and build this D before you fricken piss Witten's chances away too Jerry.....

Conditional 2nd. You're not trading a 37 year old QB. You're trading a lottery ticket to the postseason at least for the next 2 years to any team who's just a QB away. That's worth a flier on a manic-depressive drug addict or a redshirt year for a guy with career-threatening nerve damage any day of the week.

Jake Butt takes offense with that. He's not a nerve addicted manic damaged TE. He just tore an ACL, making him perfect in the second round.

Is there really anybody fine with our current pass rush? I can't imaging that.
There's a couple of posters in the diff threads that are fine with Irving, mayowa, tank, TCrawford's, tapper and adding a rookie to that group and going with that. Some don't want to go after any free agent DEs ect...

Boggling.

Not sure I want to break the bank for this particular crop of DEs (I would have for Vernon last year, though...not sure how that turned out, really). I do want to spend the picks on that side of the ball, and DL is the most obvious choice there, for sure.

The zone can be boggling. I'm learning. Fast

That Mario Addison looks pretty good stat-wise the last 2 years. If Dallas doesn't go after a top-tier FA, him and someone like McKinley or Charlton in the 1st could boost our pass rush.

This team is contending now
At some point in the next 2 seasons the back up QB is likely to have to win a game or 2 that helps us make the playoffs or determines home field
Moore or Sanchez are not going to give us a chance
That would be worth it from my perspective

I'm not trading Romo for less than a first and I'm certainly not releasing him

If we got a first for Romo that would be on par with the Walker trade. Think the best they'll do is a 2nd. But its possible a team would pay extra for a conditional pick tied to Romos health, stats, and team record, etc.

Using the June tag offers no advantage under your scenario, it actually hurts the team.

Even when a player is designated as a June release and released in March when free agency begins, the move doesn't officially go on the books until June 2nd.

It wouldn't free up a penny to spend on new contracts.

Dallas would have to carry Tony Romo's entire $24.7M cap number until June 2nd.

And while the move would eventually free up more cap space in 2017 than a regular release/trade, the total savings are the same under either scenario. All the June designation does is change how much dead money there is this year and next.

An immediate release/trade would see all of Romo's dead money ($19.6M) count in 2017 and clear all remaining cap numbers in '18 and '19 ($48.9M).

Using the June designation would break up the $19.6M in dead money into two hits, $10.7M this year and $8.9M in '18. The Cowboys would get more cap space this year on June 2nd, but less in '18.

If Romo has to go, bite the bullet and take the entire hit this year.

We get immediate savings to spend on new contracts and Romo is completely off the books next year.
