Aikman doesn't know if it's accurate that the HC of the Cowboys is a coveted job

Troy Aikman was dropping some truth tonight before the Mon night playoff game, saying bluntly, “I’m not sure the Cowboys head coaching job is still a coveted position.” He also went on to say he doesn’t think a guy like Dan Campbell would have success in Dallas because of the way this franchise is being run. Troy said he loves the Dallas Cowboys, implying this is exactly why he is speaking out.

I know this is a frustrating time to be a Cowboys fan, but I find it refreshing and encouraging to see our Hall of Fame, Ring of Honor, SB MVP former QB speaking the truth in public about how bad this once proud franchise is being run. We need more former players like Troy doing more of this. Jerry is more like the Wizard of Oz than some NFL tough guy with football credibility. Troy doing his part to pull the curtain back.

Was going to post and recap but see it's already been posted.

Other highlights from video:
  • Marcus Spears, another ex-Cowboy, is at table too and agrees with all of this.
  • Troy says team has not truly enabled a head coach since Jimmy Johnson.
  • All 4 of the panelists say culture change is most important thing they need with a new coach but will never happen because that culture is Jerry and every head coach hiring will always have to tow the company line with Jerry. Therefore, no longer a coveted coaching position in NFL.
  • Aikman was surprised because everything pointed to McCarthy being back, but somewhere in that 4 day discussion they couldn't agree. Aikman thinks Kellen Moore might be the next HC.

In the past acting like it’s not a coveted job was just BS.

The Jones’s just refused to pay a coach that they could dictate what they do.

Now it’s actually trash.

The cap sucks, the team won’t add anything but rookies, and you’re stuck with a declining QB who takes up too much cap space.

The Dallas job is a bad job right now.

I’m sure they’ll hire some scrub like Kellen Moore or Mike Zimmer.

Best strap in and get comfortable folks, this is the state of things till Jerry kicks the bucket. After that, who knows?

1.The Cowboys have no money for FAs
2.New coach would be stuck with Dak who's in rapid decline.
3. New coach doesn't get to pick his coaching staff.
4.Owner is mingling around practice making friends with players.
5.Owner wants majority of credit for success but blames coach for losses.

Feel free to add something I missed but I just don't see why someone would want this job.

......why would it be?.....can't even hire your own staff and you get the weekly gameplan from the GM.

Fact Check

1.The Cowboys have no money for FAs (FALSE - Quit believing Jerry and Stephen)
2.New coach would be stuck with Dak who's in rapid decline. (FALSE - Any QB looks bad without a WR group, RB group and inconsistent OL)
3. New coach doesn't get to pick his coaching staff. (TRUE)
4.Owner is mingling around practice making friends with players. (TRUE)
5.Owner wants majority of credit for success but blames coach for losses. (TRUE)

Tell Troy to stick to his beer manufacturing and study the Constitution.

I agree with Aikman, to a certain extent. I think the publicity around the Cowboys is probably a selling point for coaching candidates. But the problem a lot of coaches are going to have is the lack of control, and credit, they will get. Even if they win Jerry will do everything he can to take the credit and diminish the achievements of his HC. Only a certain type of candidate would want the Dallas job.

Look at what Jerry did to Mike McCarthy last season. He sandbagged him while refusing to extend him. I think most head coaches would prefer to go someplace normal. Jerry does have a reputation around the league.

On the other hand, as I said, Dallas is the richest franchise in sports. As a HC that might be pretty appealing too.

It's not. This team is being held back by how they choose to overpay average players. Jerry is cheap when it comes to paying my coaches. He also does a poor job interviewing qualified candidates.

Yall will sit here and agree with it because Troy said it. Its nonsense.

So a hc candidate would rather go coach the Raiders or Jags over the Dallas Cowboys with the chance to coach Ceedee Lamb and Micah Parsons?

LOL

The only person who would accept this job with the mountains of negatives - starting with dealing with Jerry are coaches who have no options and no one is knocking at their door with offers. Remember, McCarthy took the job after spending a year out of football. He was tarred and feathered as an ineffectual coach who was done with coaching. He had no options and there were no other offers out there for him as a HC. At best he would have been brought in as a OC if at that. If the Cowboys job wasn't available I wouldn't have been surprised if McCarthy would have ended up in College Football. The market for him was 0, so of course in that landscape he was going to take anything. In 2024 after 3 straight 12-5 seasons and keeping the team competitive in a year where the owner/gm screwed you there is more demand for McCarthy. Hope he gets a chance to get away from this mess and go on to do well wherever he ends up.

You can find 2 quality players on every roster. It’s not a matter of coaching them when Jerry is calling the shots. Imagine every press conference surrounded by Jerry and his moron kid. Raiders and Jags definitely have more coaching freedoms without a meddling owner!

Always have been a Troy fan (obviously).

He will always choose the disciplinarian, no-nonsense approach to running a team. Obviously he has a wealth of institutional knowledge of what goes on over there internally. It probably drives him nuts, thus influencing his opinions. He respects Jerry but doesn't like how things are ran.

I would agree with him that this job takes a certain type of personality to work through on a daily basis. Not everyone is cut out for it, not everyone wants it.
