Aikman doesn't know if it's accurate that the HC of the Cowboys is a coveted job

....coveted only if you're ok with several "Yes Sir Mr. Jones", "No Sir, Mr. Jones", "Ok Mr. Jones", or "Great idea Coach Jones" or "Who is my OC Mr. Jones?" or "Who is that guy Mr. Jones?".

The next time Troy has something good to say about the Cowboys, he will say how great the Eagles are.

Jerry believes anyone could coach the team with all the talent he has assembled.

I'd rank them:

1) Bears: Practically brand spanking new first-round QB to work with, along with some young talent around him
2) Jaquars: Again, a top pick at QB ... but I've seen where their GM may be worse to work with than Jerry. But their roster wasn't as bad as their record.
3) Cowboys: Depends a lot on what you think of the team's free agent philosophy and Dak, but Dallas was a 12-5 team for three consecutive seasons and clearly had injuries that contributed heavily to its struggles this year.
4) Saints: Questions at QB are worse than ours. They have to figure that out, haven't made the playoffs since 2020 and are over the cap by around $60 million at the moment.
5) Jets: 14 consecutive losing seasons and an aging quarterback who needs to retire.
6) Raiders: Very unstable environment with no real direction from front office and no QB.

There are 32 head coaches in the NFL and you make a pile of money. They are all coveted.

Troy and others are obviously speaking in relative terms. Not as coveted to high end coaches that have other options that pay close or more than the Cowboys.

Guys that have no other real options may covet the cash, but not care about the onfield product sucks.

He is not sure?

Come on Troy. You know better. I understand, thats not something you say publicly but nobody wants to coach for this franchise. Or at least not those who actualy care about being successful in a sporty way.

This is a no go area. You wont get paid, you will work in a lousy managed environment, you will have minimal influence on roster building or weekly team setup.

You will get undermined by the owner on a constant basis and have to talk to an alcoholic and his authistic sun but still need to be polite and professional by doing that.

Further you will have to deal with disgrundled fans who will call for your head because they see you as the reason their team sucks. And not the FO or certain players in important positions.

And whats more than that this franchise is not even interessted in football. You dont spend years of your life and a lot of money in your education as a coach, put a lot of work into it to have a successfull career. And then finally have a promising future because you made yourself a name in the league - that all just to chose one of the worst franchises in the business?

No. You dont do that.

As a coach you are only attracted by this franchise when you are either:

1.) very young and never coached. You are looking for a chance to start somewhere. Good managed teams wont get you that chance because you are a no name and are not viewed as talented. Then Dallas is the place to be. You will decide to take a cheap contract to be able to gather needed experienceand then after other teams took notice of you get hell out of there as fast as you can.

2.) an over the hill coach who is considering retirement for years or is already retired. But sniffs a chance to earn some easy money with a last contract. A guy who has no more ambitions regarding football. That helps a lot in handling all those frightening people in the driver seat in dc.

For 2), a stint with the Cowboys also gets you more media exposure and an in with the Cowboys, improving your value as a sports broadcaster after you retire from coaching.

Jerry brings a lot to the table from a business perspective.

I honestly do not see how it could be.

If it didn't pay so much, no one would want it.
Certainly not any coaches that are actually coveted.

When I was a kid, being the Cowboys coach would be a dream come true. But these days I would only take the job because no other team wanted me. I'd even take less money to coach for a serious franchise where I could actually do the job of HC.
