Aikman: "why do you throw that pass when Zeke just ran the ball for 8yds?"

I’m going to take Troy Aikmans word over yours and Jason Garrett’s  some people just don’t have it in big clutch moments that goes for coaches too. Garrett has brain freezes. The pass play to Dez was unacceptable. He’s done it 2 years in a row. Maybe 3rd times a charm. You don’t take a knee at the 1. But you don’t throw a jump ball to Dez. You simply run the ball on 2nd down. If zeke scores on that play at least it was the right play call and if you lose no one is 2nd guessing! End of story.

we can all agree the pass to dez was dumb as rocks. now let’s say dak slides at the 1 on his run. gb probably uses their TO right? u don’t think they do that and let’s us score on the very next play, leaving basically the same amount of time on the clock?

i’m agreeing with you on everything you said. but i do think this was a possibility.

Troy simply just responded to the fact that the pass was incomplete. Had it gone for a TD he'd be praising the nearly 9 minute drive that put the Cowboys up 3.

He was confused just like 98% of this board and all the analyst were. Some people just don’t learn from their mistakes. Like I said if you run it with zeke and he scores at least there’s no 2nd guessing going on.

I had a rant about Garrett 2 years ago and was shut down and penalized so i have steered clear of the topic on here.

Can people now see the light and last season was an exception not the rule more to do so with excellent OL play as teams had not yet worked us out. Hello this season..........

Garrett is rubbish and always has been IMO but i suppose as long as he keeps clapping the rubbish performances and accepting constantly calling ( or if he does not call them he gives them the go ahead anyway and show some spine FFS ) the wrong plays he will be here for years to come and i have not even mentioned clock management yet and being able to control the last 2mins of a tight game.

Like hell. There would still be some on here saying that Zeke should have taken a knee after he got to the one.

Ok but if we ran zeke on 2nd down that chews 30-40 seconds off the clock. So even if Dak scores on the next play ( if we had ran zeke on 2nd down) that keeps the clock going. We gave GB an extra TO with the incompletion. It’s a difference of GB getting the ball back with around 35 seconds left instead of 1:13.

Why would I enjoy that?

I just find with under 2 minutes left and down 4 people prioritizing wasting clock rather than trying to score baffles the mind.

The drive was a 17 play, 79 yard 8 minute and 43 second affair. And at the end you have to punch it in for a touchdown the hardest thing to do in football. You take the 7 when you can.

I understand being mad at the loss but being mad at a single play in a 17 yard drive that put the team up with 70 some seconds left is incredibly emotional and misguided.

For all we know the run the ball and score a TD and then I guarantee you someone would say that Zeke was an idiot for not downing himself at the 1.

Do you know that you can score a TD running the ball? If you pass, you either score a TD (great), or stop the clock. If you run, you either score a TD(great) or keep the clock running. Can you tell the difference?

agreed. it all comes back to that 2nd down throw. very stupid. daks run and scoring wasn’t the problem. it was a problem bc as you said, it happened 30-40 seconds too early.

Mickey and broaddus are going to take a whole segment fighting about this on talking Cowboys tomorrow. I guarantee you Mickey is going to back Garrett cause he’s such a homer like some of you and Broaddus is going to back the logical thing that should have been done. It’s gonna get heated.

If you run and gain 1 yard then run the play clock, you have first and goal at the ten with somewhere around 20 seconds left (5 seconds for play plus play clock run off). 20 seconds likely isn't enough time to run 4 real plays, so you've effectively restricted your own opportunities.

The bottom line is in that situation you score no matter what. This board is GENUINELY trying to argue that if GB left a receiver uncovered and was going to let us score they wouldn't have taken it and run the ball instead.
lol you need to watch the game again, if we pick up a first down we have first and goal with over a minute left inside the 10 (possibly inside the 5), a running clock and 2 timeouts, the world is our oyster. Even if he gets stuffed, we have two more chances to get 1 yard to get a 1st down to get four more chances! And there was 90 seconds left in the game when the fade was called, the coaching staff literally took nothing about the clock into consideration. It's beyond moronic, it's inexcusable.

The goal is to score. They lined up and saw they had Dez in a favorable look. They took their shot.

THE GOAL IS TO SCORE. Please take game context into consideration. It wasn't as if they threw into triple coverage just to throw. And it wasn't as if they could do whatever they wanted to GB at will (they were a half inch from being stopped on 4th down just a few plays earlier).

THE GOAL IS TO WIN. Speaking of context, we had 1:40 seconds and 2 timeouts left. We just ran for almost 9 yards. We had 3 down to get less than 2 yards for new set of downs. Zeke was running well. There was no reason to take that risk at that point in the game and run a pass play to score. You run and you either score or at worst get closer to 1st down and keep the clock running. We had 3 downs to either score or get new set of downs and burn more clock. That was the better option in this context than passing.

Rodgers has tore Marinelli's defense apart for years, all the way back in his days with Chicago. Why Garrett has faith he can stop him in under two minutes is beyond me.

This is not the only time this has happened to a team, it actually happened against the Giants in a game with us. The Giants had the ball like on our 2 or 3 yard line and for some reason Elie threw the ball out the back of the endzone giving us a free time out basically. We got the ball back and drove down and Romo hit Witten with like 7 seconds on the clock for the game winner.

The New York media roasted Coughlin alive over this blunder and Elie as well with basically the same rational in this thread, why would you throw the ball in that situation. I think this was Coughlin's last year with the Giants.

The moral of this story is that when you do stupid things like throwing incomplete passes that gives your opponent free timeouts, don't be surprised when they drive the field and beat your arse.

He likely didn't even get that far in his head, it never occurred to him to do anything other than score a TD because we were down 4. If he had any other thought in his tiny brain there's no way we throw

I had forgotten that, it was almost the same thing you're right. It's amazing how NFL coaches being paid millions can't walk and chew gum when it comes to the game clock.

We aren't looking for a new set of downs. That wasn't the goal. The goal was to take the lead. Something that wasn't assured by a new set of downs. They saw Dez one on one and wanted to try and score the touchdown. There was no promises that the same opportunity would be there a down from then. Or two downs from then. Or whenever you'd like GB to present it's backside for you.

I didn't say that was the goal. Goal is to score but if the run play failed to score, the worst thing would be getting closer to new set of downs and it still keeps the clock running. For a pass play, if it failed, it stops the clock and we are no closer to getting a first down.

We didn't need to panic at that point. It wasn't like 4th down on their 15 yard line where you had to pass.

Or like a couple of other times they blitz the right gap and nail Zeke for a big loss and you are needing to pass for the first down.
