Alex Smith, Bryant, Gore and Norv... remind you of anyone?

Just curious, and I know today is kind of a weird day to post this given that the Niners did not put on the best show yesterday, but has anyone else thought about the possible parallels to the 1990/1991 Cowboys? I know Norv didn't come on board here until '91, but I do see where under his guidance Smith is going to flourish and where Gore and Bryant are really coming into their own. Even if these guys play for one of our hated rivals I can't help, from a nostalgic standpoint if nothing else, to think of the breakout season of '91 for our own Triplets back in those days.

Not saying that any of the the current three guys will match the accomplishments of Aikman-Emmitt-Irvin, nor that they will match the 11 wins put up by our '91 squad (I do think they'll be close to the 7-9 we put up in '90) but with Norv helping them along in the role he is by far the best at, offensive coordinator, I think they'll make big strides this year.

no not at all.. When Gore fumbled that ball and let Patterson take it all the way the only guy chasing him down was Smith.. Had that been our trio Irvin or Emmitt wouldve tackled his big ARSE... I cant believe not a single player would chase after him. PATHETIC

Alex Smith, Bryant, Gore and Norv...remind you of anyone? Yes they remind me of Alex Smith, Bryant, Gore and Norv. Other than that no they don't remind me of anyone special and certainly not the triplets that Norv had before. It is like comparing a matchbox car with the real deal.

I like alex smith.

dont like Gore, Bryant is ok.

The 49ers put on a pathetic display. how many of the egales big yardage plays came because the last defender failed to make a sideline tackle. allowing a run to go an extra 25 yards because of a stiff arm, that was just sorry, run through that stiff arm and take him out of bounds, dont try to grab him, just awful tackling over and over again.

I understand the responses in this thread, and I may have needed to be clearer in my original post. More than anything, I think the circumstances are reminscent more than the players overall, although I think Smith/Bryant/Gore will have pretty decent seasons this year. I guess the playing out of the rest of the season will tell the tale.

I remember when Shuler, Westbrook, and was it Terry Allen? were supposed to be Norv's new triplets.

exactly...and I love how Alex Smith is really performing well this year after all the grief he took last season...I really think that unless you have a playoff team, you should play the rookies asap.

Gore is going to be a great RB for them as well, and Bryant, despite his head problems, is a very talented #1 receiver.

I still get upset that we let him go for what turned out to be nothing...I guarantee you the 49ers would now get a first day selection for him.

If there's anyone in the NFL that reminds me of the early 90's Cowboys it would be the Bengals, with Carson Palmer Chad and Rudi Johnson, and building from a really bad team etc, not exactly but a lot closer than the 49ers.

Plus, Davis is a huge beast. The defense needs an enormous amount of work, though. I don't think it's unrealistic to think that this team could be a real offensive powerhouse soon.

I was a huge AB fan, but let's have some perspective. We let him go for Quincy Morgan, bad trade no doubt, but he needed to go. Cleveland let him walk for nothing. Then, the only team he can catch on with is the pathetic 49ers? Even after the year he had in 05? Should really tell us alot about what the rest of the league thinks of him.

God forbid they bring in a reciever that might challenge him for that #1 spot.

Good point Danny, but Smith has already shown more than Shuler ever did, and although Allen and Gore both hold the dubious distinction of having had both knees wrecked, Allen was much older than Gore at that point (although he did have some decent years in Commanders Land anyhow). Westbrook meanwhile, was incredibly injury-prone and a headcase to boot (remember when he beat up Stephen Davis in practice on that one occasion?).

and still..........I'd trade any wr on our team besides T.O. for him....Glenn only because AB is so young....but I've made foolish decisions before, too.

Until they beat a team that isnt in the NFC West I'll have to disagree. They faced one challenge and got lit up. They are still the 49ers people.

Probably because we hang onto the idea of the player. He's a reciever with alot of talent, that doesn't want to earn anything. Give him #1 touches on a garbage team, and he's a happy camper. Make him earn his reps, and his entitlement complex goes nuts.

Promise is alot different than saying they're a good team, or a team on the rise, or anything like that. Their defense is dreadful. However, on the offensive side, you've got to like their potential.

As may on this board know, I'm a huge fan of Smith. Have been since before he was drafted. Has not really been a very popular opinion but I'm happy to see that he is making some progress. I do believe Norv will help him but they have more then just a few pieces missing still. I think there on the right track but it will be a little while yet.

I agree. Had Dallas had their clock cleaned yesterday like SF did I'm pretty sure people would not be talking about a team of promise. SF offense did not do anything until the outcome was pretty much in hand.
