All-In Mock

How is it Madden?

Rumors are out there that Richardson could be had for a 4th round pick. Today, there are articles that the Seahawks have come down some from their trade demands for Sherman.
Sherman counts 11mil on the cap this yr. Richardson 8. Dallas can't handle that until after june1. So the math won't add up so it can't be done

Okay, before everyone gets upset. This is not what I think will happen. This is just a mock that assumes a few things:
  • The Cowboys believe they are close to contending and are a few defensive players away.
  • The team will make the necessary adjustments (exercise Jason WItten's $4 million, restructure players, sign incoming players to extensions lowering their 1st year cap #, etc.)
  • Rumors about teams wanting to trade these veterans are true.
Also, I used CBS Sports rankings for the picks for the Cowboys.

Day One
1(28) Traded to the San Francisco 49ers, who want to jump back into the 1st round to get their QB.
  • Cowboys send the 28th pick to San Francisco for the 34th pick and the 109th pick.
Day Two
2a(34) T.J Watt DE 6-4/252 Wisconsin

2b(60) Traded to the Seattle Seahawks for Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman
  • Cowboys send the 60th pick and a conditional 2018 pick to Seattle for Richard Sherman CB and the 210th pick.

3(92) JuJu Smith-Schuster WR 6-1/215 USC

Day Three

4b(133) Traded to the NY Jets for defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson

Okay, Flame On!

I like it sans Richardson. He is a guy even given his talent could wind up subtraction by addition given his issues. With what they went through with Hardy, dont know if I'd touch Richardson

Adding Watt and Sherman would be a big enough boon for the defense that the addition of Richardson wouldnt be nessesary. Id rather spend that pick on a CB with upside or Davenport if he is there. You still have some age issues at CB and RT is still very much in doubt

So we end up with Watt, Sherman, Richardson, JuJu, Evans, Moss, Jones and Decoud?

Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But I have irrational fears of USC skill players sucking in the NFL.
I like JuJu but fear is more then justified. Marqise Lee did have a pretty solid year this year though. So there is hope that its primarily Carrolls guys

I prefer not taking on vets but keeping the team young with draft picks. Wouldn't mind a trade down for an extra 2nd and third though...
I don't think they will be trading down.....I think they will stay put and draft DL or CB unless some person falls.....I think the wild card here is say......a WR like Cory Davies falling or a DE falling.

Yeah. And i'm definitely not trading down out of the 1st for an extra 4th. The minimum i'd take is a high 3rd.

The math works - per a draft calculator - for pick #28 for picks #33 and # 108. That would give Dallas the top picks in rounds 2 and 4, and the driver's seat for days two and three of the draft. Those are prime positions to have "first dibs" on any talent(s) that should slide, or to be in position to receive trade offers.

But, even having said that, if the guy I want is there at #28 - in this case TJ Watt - I'm drafting him and not trading down and risking losing him.

Yeah. And i'm definitely not trading down out of the 1st for an extra 4th. The minimum i'd take is a high 3rd.
Then you're not trading down. The 5th year is a nice thing but in a deep draft most teams are into trading down and that would include teams around us. You don't have the leverage you would if the situation were the talent tier falling off around 30.

We can leverage the 5th year option for all those teams in the top of the 2nd looking to get a QB.

I'd be really tempted if someone like Cleveland offered 33 and 52 for pick 28. Obviously depends on who's still available.
Yeah but a 4th like he said is crazy

Not if it's the first pick in the fourth round it isn't. The value adds up and it puts you in the driver's seat for Day Three of the draft, either getting your choice of top talent left, or quirking even more picks in a trade with someone else.

Outside of straight up value, being at the top if the draft for days two and three does have its advantages. One of the factors I feel the draft charts have failed to factor in are the 5th year options, and having the first pick at the start of each day of the draft in its new format. They should be considered when determining value.

Seems a lot of you are going to be really surprised when Evans goes top 50...

No trades for vet players. Draft the guys and let them play, learn, be here for the long run. No head cases or mouth pieces from other teams.
We trade those top picks, and will miss out on some decent talent that can become cornerstones in 2 to 3 years.

Now I wouldn't mind a slight trade down, even though as mentioned, you give up that 5th year option. But if we can pick up 2 extra picks, and one in the 2nd round. It may be worth it.
On the point chart, we could trade with the Rams.
We give our 1st and 3rd to the Rams.
We get their 2nd, 3rd and 5th.

So we will have 2 2nds, and move from the 28th pick in the 3rd to the 5th pick. Therefore giving us 3 picks from 37 to 69.
We also regain a 5th round which we do not currently have.
Then our 6th ans 2 7ths. Possibly can use to trade up is needed.

The way we've been hitting on picks, I'd rather keep them.

There will be a first round talent at CB available at #60. I'd rather have a young talented CB under club control for a cheap 4 years than get one or two pro bowl years of Sherman before he's due for a large payday and starts to decline.

Also would rather have a 4th rounder under club control for four years than rent Richardson for one year, since I don't see us signing him long term.

The already extended Witten. You cant restructure and contract you just extended in the same yr i dont think.

And you are not going to renegotiate a player you just traded for during the draft. Well because you dont have time. You have the draft you are focusing on?

I wouldnt mind it, but it just wont get done without the capspace so you can get the trades done and work on them deals later.

Why would you trade for Richardson when it's gonna cost you 8 million....and he is a free agent @ the end of the year? You know he's gonna walk away....and try free agency. Your wasting draft picks. Besides rumors are he's a lazy turd after the Jets paid him...and he's done nothing since.

As for Sherman...I think I would rather try and beat cancer than have that guy on my team.

Those top picks could be busts.

So if I could get Sherman for a 2nd and Richardson for a 4th, those are at least worthy of consideration. Sherman makes the secondary significantly better.

People's aversion to older players/vets and this whole "progress blockers" mantra cracks me up.

I had never heard of this before but when they announced the restructure they said it creates $4M of cap room that the team could exercise to use now.

As of right now Dallas has 4.9mil in cap room. Dallas cant make these trades unless they work out deals with these guys at the time of trade with new deals in place. Because as of right now Sherman has a 11mil cap hit for the team trading for him, The prorated SB money is taken out as his total hit is 14mil+ but that prorated stays with SEA. Richardson has no Prorated left so his cap hit is 8mil for the team. So unless Dallas has 19mil as time of trade they cant trade for them unless they work out new deals for these two players which isnt going to get done is the 5mins that Dallas is on the clock.

I think thats why posters are using the madden reference to your mock.
