One reason I believe Dallas made the move to Collins is that he's just a better athlete than Leary at this point in his career. Collins can get out to the second level quicker, which will help turn short gains into longer runs. Here's an example of how quickly Collins gets to the second level:

Looking at this play if Randle follows the design of the play it's going for some good yards. I think this is a huge frustration for the coaching staff. I'm sure the Oline is frustrated as well even though we don't hear about it. I would point to a play like the one above and say this line can't get any continuity with the RB because the RB doesn't allow it he free lances too much. In my opinion this is where Murray was so good, and the line clicked because they knew he would follow the play and he would setup his blockers.

If Collins continues to play like that and CMike is everything we hope he is mane we can get back to the ground n pound of last year.

IMO this play is a the staple of why the Run game isn't working. Well with Randle. Let's hope this changes

Exactly. either Randle isn't sure where he's supposed to go, or he can't keep his composure enough to let the lanes open. it's pretty obvious the play was called to go to the right of Collins, but he cut out to the left of Smith into the waiting arms of four defenders.

Man Randle is a little patience and vision too much to ask? Collins opened a hole you could run a train through!

Yup this has been a problem and the leaping against the coaches wishes because on that play he missed a hole as well. That's what got the Oline coach all fired up. Like I said I think the issue with the run game could very well be because Randle free lances too much.

If there's many more of these types of runs I can see that being the case, cause I mean in this play it seems if he follows his blocks he's basically be one on one with the safety and if he throws a good stiff arm out there it's a good 20 yards before he's caught.

he's scared is the issue.

if you look at the top towards the end of the gif...the safety was headed for the lane he was supposed to hit.

he got scared and abandoned ship

After watching that, I just realized how much meat Joseph Randle left on that 1 bone La'el Collins gave him to chew on.

Tyron Smith could have made a better block by engaging the guy instead of trying to cut him. Randle left some yards on the field still.

Yup.

Anytime you see RB's making giant cuts like Randle is doing, it's likely that he's not following the design of the play. Especially in the WCO where you're basically looking to make 1 cut at the most and the angle is more obtuse.

Frederick doesn't really get off the ball well in the first .gif, but Randle just needs to go to off his left shoulder and there's a good crease there.

Looks to me like the play called for following Martin and there was nothing there. Randle could either bounce outside left or cut it back, which he did the latter and made something out of nothing.

Nobody on the defense was fooled either.

I don't think anyone knocked Demarco for his vision. It was his speed that was -and still is- his problem. He sees the hole but he doesn't have the burners to get through it. And on plays where he should have been getting 20-30, he would get 5-10.

I don't know what any of you guys are seeing. Randle cuts back to where Collins is, after going left, but Smith is running straight to the right and Randle has to wait for him to cross to engage, which he does.

The guy who made the play was the DB on Atlanta coming in untouched. Randle BEAT THE DL... The DB made a good tackle, but if Randle beat him, it would have been a huge gain..

I agree there, I don't think Randle trusted that cut block enough to take the run up the gut which is why he cut it back. If Smith engaged he might have had more confidence to just plunge ahead. I'm pretty sure this is a standard zone run where you start by reading the blocks that would take you off tackle and cut back to which ever lane opens up. The cut block Smith laid panicked Randle and forced him to his next read which led him to get tackled by the DB.

On that note, I might be wrong but another option would have been to just follow his blocks all the way outside to the right maybe Free holds off his guy on the edge enough for Randle to turn the corner?
