This caught my attention. These are the Cowboys' defensive passer ratings and W-L records.

2010
first 11 games: 101.4 (3-8)
last 5 games: 75.2 (3-2)

2011
first 11 games: 80.8 (7-4)
last 5 games: 105.5 (1-4)

Romo was injured in the 2nd qtr of game six and lost for the year. He had a QB rec of 1-5 in those six games throwing some costly INTs. His worst year IMO. Kitna relieved him.

Clearly defensive passer rating is well.....overrated at least as far as predicting a winning record. Defensive passer ratings and stats are tricky for me.

That's been a popular one over the years.

Every summer.

We live the same year over and over. They just don't realize it. The tide will turn when we should fire Garrett and blow everything up by about Halloween.

It does seem to be a phrase we hear over and over again without realizing why.

It's a sign, Cowboys fan from Texas just won the Spelling Bee and threw up the X at the end

It's our year!

Something seems different

It just Feels different this season

Sources: Callahan to remain OC; continue to call plays

Scouting Notebook: Matt Miller's Final Team-by-Team Reports

It isn't groundhog day. Is it really something people here say all the time? Or are you beating a favorite talking point into the ground again?

The phrase 'It just feels different' shows up on CowboysZone a total of 7 pages going back to 2005. "Feels different" shows up on 98 pages, total. That includes posts from ~35k different members, going back over a decade, including quoted posts that may have used that term, and posts about things other than the Cowboys or teams other than the Cowboys where things 'feel different.' It also includes times like the 2007 or 2009 seasons, or some of the early Parcells camps or early Romo games where things happened, in fact, to feel different.

What if what KJJ thinks of as being a popular phrase over the year was him just remembering you trying to make an issue out of it over and over and over again? Nah, it couldn't be that simple, could it?

I wish it were simply a strategy, or formula, but it was really just great pass defense. The 2009 Saints (#3) and 2010 Packers (#1) were among the league's best in defensive passer rating. Efficiency -- not yards -- is what wins games. In 2015, Dallas was #5 in the league in passing yards allowed, but 20th in DPR. If those rankings had been reversed, we'd have challenged for the division last year.

Defensive Passer Rating (Opposing QB's rating vs. Defense)
The first number includes all games in regular and postseason. The number in parentheses is postseason only.
SB winner's DPR
2010 Packers 67.3 (67.8)
2011 Giants 85.5 (83.1)
2012 Ravens 78.6 (72.4)
2013 Seahawks 65.1 (73.5)
2014 Patriots 82.3 (73.0)
2015 Broncos 76.2 (66.3)
AVG: 75.8
Playoff avg: 72.7
Cowboys' DPR
2010 92.8
2011 88.4
2012 94.7
2013 96.0
2014 90.4
2015 94.2
AVG: 92.8
Playoff avg: 104.8

Great post backed up by stats.

It must be terrible to be a fan of this team and think so poorly of them and their prospects. How people can be so negative when things are so bright, I can;t understand. It must be that they prefer to not get their hopes up, so they won't ever be disappointed.

What a terrible way to live life.

Well you nailed this one for sure. It is pretty bad being a Cowboys fan. Or maybe you think 4-12 is awesome. Or maybe I just have higher standards than you. Much higher. :hammer:

It must be terrible to be a fan of this team and think so poorly of them and their prospects.

This next is definitely your problem. 8-8, 8-8, 8-8, 12-4, 4-12 is absolutely NOT bright. And with Romo fading into the sunset and apparently without him, we stink, Im not sure what bright future you see.

How people can be so negative when things are so bright, I can;t understand.

Now I am feeling bad for YOU. The Cowboys are NOT life. They are a football team, a hobby, nothing more. Not some loving child you have to pamper and defend.

What a terrible way to live life

You don't know if Lawrence is gone for 4 games in case you forgot he is doing an appeal. It's ridiculous to say they may be gone for more games after that. And what we have left is better than what lined up for us at DE in 2014 so again I don't know what negative colored glasses you have on but sure okay. And who says Dez isn't going to come back the same? Julio Jones just had a career year coming off the exact same injury. Romo back is better now than it was in 2014 coming off the surgery so explain how he is more brittle? You can belief the worst case scenario for everything if you want, I'll pass on that unrealistic outcome

Well you quite obviously have no clue how to analyze football players. How is Romo brittle? I'm not going to bother answering that laughable question either. You are clearly lost in love. Enjoy, I wont wake you from your dream.

Just a small note. Dallas was leading when Romo got hurt vs the Giants that year. I know they ended up losing, but--and not that it means much--"his" QB rec should be 1-4 or 2-4. Stats books will have it 1-5 because, unlike baseball baseball, the starter gets the loss whether the team is winning or not when he leaves.
Nevertheless, that early season had an ugly start--though I feel certain things would have balanced out. Bottom line was the team gave up on Wade and the tea's record suffered for it.

Where did I say the phrase has only been used here? I've been posting on Cowboy fan boards for 14 years and Cowboyszone is the 4th board I've posted on and have seen the phrase "it just feels different" on everyone of them. It's one of the more popular phrases FANS use. Some FANS think every year just feels different.

"Am I alone?" may be the most popular phrase used by FANS. Do some research and see how many times that shows up.

This drives me so crazy.

And generally speaking, I think it's easier to field a good defense than it is a good offense. We just haven't devoted enough resources to it under Garrett.

With the rules bent to favor offenses and promote scoring it's easier to field a good offense than defense in todays game. If you can hit on a franchise QB you can have a solid offense for many years by building around them and continuing to provide them with weapons. Too many of the rules favor the offense and handcuff the defense. The player safety rules have helped offenses and made it more difficult for defenders because they have to think too much when making hits. They've taken some of the reaction away from defenders because they have to avoid the head/neck and even shoulder area or it can draw a flag. Certain hits can lead to penalties, fines and suspensions. You can't hit QBs high, low or a fraction too late.

The rules have made playing DB more difficult because they mostly favor the receivers. The rules have made it much easier to pass the ball forcing defenses to have to load up on pass rushers. Prior to Garrett arriving the Cowboys devoted a lot of resources to the defense with high picks and they've yet to field a solid unit in years. We've gone through multiple schemes/coordinators along with a lot of players and have yet to hit on a successful formula. Not even Parcells or Wade could build a solid defense in Dallas.

Every time you see an opportunity to pounce and call me out to lure others in to make this all about me you jump at the chance. You went out of your way to do some ridiculous research to try and turn this into an attack on me. lol

Believe it or not, KJJ, but I hardly ever even think of you, and normally I don't reply to a post of yours because I don't want to induce the labor those exchanges always require to deliver such ugly babies. It just so happened yesterday that you unwittingly agreed with Risen's posturing and you got quoted because of the context it gave to his post. Ie, nobody was attacking anybody, but the post was directed at Risen's argument and not your own.

These are all arguments that playing defense is getting harder in general, but we're talking about context relative to the rest of the league, so that's not really at issue. Everybody has to deal with the same circumstances.

Fielding a good NFL defense is primarily about not having weak links and then about having special players to pressure the passer. We've taken far too long in my opinion getting that first part done. When you're covering up for two limited Safeties, have issues with health and depth and LB, and have been trotting out a mixture of inexperience and not-good-enough along the DL for years, you get what we've seen: a team that can beat you if our offense is good enough to make you play low-percentage football, but a team that's not good enough to stop good QBs, meaning those games end with whoever has the ball and can score last. That's a recipe for 8-8

Anyone who uses a 4-12 record when the team is missing their franchise QB, best WR, and best CB....has lost all credibility.

That is, unless that person thinks the same players will miss the same amount of games in 2016.

Otherwise, it speaks of a very obvious agenda....almost ban able by the sheer level of stupidly.

The base line when Romo plays all or most of the season has been set at 8-8. And that was when the defense AND the Oline were weak.

Seasons when they BOTH were not week (so one at most) and Romo has played were all winning seasons

I agree. But I will say I wont be surprised in the least, to lose Romo again this upcoming season for the entire season......then what? I wont be surprised in the least. I don't think Dez provides to much difference between a W or L. Yes, more then most, but still, not that much of a difference if he is there or not when It comes to Ws and Ls.
