I used to drink a 12 pack and almost a bottle of cheap vodka or whiskey EVERY single day in my early 20's. That's real alcoholism.

Do you have a real liver? :laugh1:

I felt like I had to provide an update regarding this.

It is almost 1 month and I have achieved my goal.

No beer and no drink.

I wanted to drink first few days at first but then the urge is gone.

I will keep this going. I won't drink any beer for another few months. In fact, I am planning on going without beer until football season. And then after football season, limit my beer consumption with drinking only on Giants' games.

What do you guys think?

It's obvious that you are/were a social drinker and probably not an alcoholic. If you aren't drinking daily, don't drink to belligerence and don't feel the need to drink everything you have in stock in one sitting then you probably have all the restraint you need.

The issue here is that your wife feels differently, for whatever reason. You two need to be on the same page in what you do. If social drinking is uncomfortable to her, then find out the limits that she is ok with.

I used to say that my liver is made of platinum. Can you spare one best buddy? Haha...I could out drink everyone I knew. Looking back that's not something to brag about.

Congrats!

I don't drink but I've got other personal problems that I should to address (my gut can attest to that). Whether it's drinking, weight, doctor checkups, family time, faith ... we've all got areas we should reevaluate to see if there is an issue or not.

I can also appreciate your wife approaching the subject as she did. She could have been sarcastic, badgering, or insulting to you about it. Instead, she approached you out of love and concern. We all should be so good with our loved ones.

Enough serious stuff ... I think the root of your issue is that you're a Giants fan. That's enough to drive anyone to drink. :)

I think your wife was being overly paranoid and got you thinking the same thing. It sounds to me like you simply enjoyed a few beers after a long week of work. When youre a father of young children, Friday after they go to bed is the first time all week you get to relax and have some time to do what you want to do. For millions of men all over the world, that involves having a few beers. The fact that you didn't feel the need to drink to make it though the work week and the fact that you easily quit for a month tells me there was never even the slightest issue. Enjoying a few beers on the weekend to unwind or with your buddies is perfectly normal. It doesn't mean it will lead to anything else. If its what you want to do, I'd say go back to your routine and enjoy life. If you start drinking enough to get wasted or drinking during the week, then you should start to worry and take the steps you already did.

I agree. At this point I don't think I should take decisions on my own. Whatever I do has to be approved by her and I am thinking the same thing.

Alcoholic versus Social Drinker. That was the line for me. It was blurry after my wife confronted me and I wanted to test myself and see how I would react to no beer for 30 days.

This is now achieved. But again back to that thin line. Although I never believed I was an alcoholic, I knew I was at the borderline. At first I thought maybe I could have a few beers here and there, but why take the risk.

Stay away from alcohol for a while and see how things go. I just want to bury the habit of drinking beer for relaxing. Let's see how it will go but for now, I will keep staying away from beer for a long time.

Now that you are not drinking the beer... I suggest a nice rum and fruit drink. Captain Morgan will do just fine. :D
