An appeal for calm should we lose

Let's keep in mind going into this game that:
  1. The season is still early.
  2. This is just one game.
  3. Home teams in big games have a big inherent advantage.
  4. This has become one of our tougher games on paper.
  5. We can lose multiple games this year and still have a very successful season. We will still look like a bad team immediately following any particular loss.
A lot of media types are talking about what a circus this is. I'd like instead to propose that many of the posters in here appear to be on some kind of rollercoaster -- victories bring taunts and Superbowl predictions; losses bring calls for multiple cuts and predictions of doom. The rollercoaster turns and loops and fans get disoriented and weird things happen: 31-point victories become somber occasions to point out our faults and first-quarter incompletions are signs of the apocalypse.

I think we can beat Philadelphia and I will be pulling for the Cowboys just like everybody else here. If/when they lose, however, I will move on pretty quickly.

If we lose, then all this has been for naught.

A 2-2 team is simply an average team. Is that what we are???

We have a chance to do something special. Sunday is the beginning. We break down this barrier and push forward.

We lose, then we've proven we're nothing more than average.

Happy????

Isn't this a little premature if needed at all????

I agree....this game is a MUST WIN no matter which way you slice it.

I'm not going to be content with the 'well it's just one game and there's a long way to go crap' if we somehow lose. The difference between 3-1 and handing philly their 2nd division loss compared to being 2-2 and 2 1/2 games behind philly is monstrous, especially considering their schedule is easier than ours.

We have the better team period....on offense and especially on defense. Philly might be #1 in the NFL on offense, but they have racked up the yards against 4 garbage teams (yes the giants included) so I'm not really impressed.

All we have to do is come to play for 4 quarters and I truly believe this game won't even be close. We aren't going to make the mistakes that Green Bay did, and it only took the Giants 1 good quarter to win there.

Exactly. After 4 games, if we're not over .500, it's over. Look at the 2005 Steelers. 3-2 after 5 games, lost 2 at home. Season over. Same with Seattle, 2-2 after 4 games, why did they even bother continuing the season?

HEck, the 2003 New England Patriots got blown out 31-0 in their opener in 03, and went 2-2 their first four games.

Thank god they packed it in.

I don't think anyone is saying be happy about it but asking for people not to go overboard. I know that will not happen, I expect to see the same nay sayers over react as they always do should Dallas end up on the short end of the game. As far as if we lose we are nothing more than average? I guess you could look at it that way but with a lot more games ahead of us to play I think that would be an overstatement. Hopefully it does not come to that and Dallas will just win this game but win or lose we still have a long way to go before we know what we really have.

We'd be 2.5 games back with a loss?:laugh2:

Could you be more wrong?

The 4th game of the season, when we're 2-1, on the road is about as far from a must win as you can get.

Would it be nice to win? Yes. Would it be a statement that we're staking claim to this division? Yes. Is it a "must win?" Absolutely not.

To counter your points.....

1) season is still early....but we thought that last year after dropping a pivotal game to washington at home in week 2....ultimately cost us a playoff spot.
2) It's a huge game, and the NFC East title is on the line IMO.
3) Yah that's why every year they get bounced in the playoffs and the games aren't even close (i.e. Chi/Car, Pit/Den, Pit/Indy, from last year to name a few)
4) No it hasn't, philly has beat 3 bad teams and lost to another bad one....especially on defense.
5) We can't lose multiple games, we really need to go 13-3 if we want a first round bye, maybe even better...look at chicago and seattle's schedules if you dont' believe me.

Well according to Bledsoe in Sham's latest on DC.COM:

"Division games count double," Bledsoe was saying Wednesday. "It's a road game in a stretch of them. If we win, it would give us two division wins and would give them (the Eagles and Commanders) the two losses. It's a huge game, you can't overstate it. But to say it's more than that would be presumptuous."

"It depends how it plays out," Bledsoe believes. "If we win this game and go on to win the Super Bowl, you can probably say it was a defining moment of the season. If we win this game and lay an egg the rest of the way, obviously it wouldn't have meant as much.
"If we don't play well and don't have a good year, people can look back and say it was the place our season started the downturn. Or we could lose and turn it back around and people will say it was the wake up call we needed. It all depends on what happens the rest of the way."

Then Al Singleton says...

"Defining the team you are doesn't happen in one game," he says. "It happens in the off-season, in your workouts, in training camp. You have to prove yourself every week. Consistency defines what you are as a football team, and you can't establish that in one game."

And then the new leader of the Team Bradie James says...

"It will speak volumes about where we are, and it'll do that for them, too," he says. "But it's not going to be the ending result of the season. It's a big game in the NFC East on the road, and if we can win it that lets us know where we are early. But we break the season down into quarters, and this is just the end of the first quarter."

---------------
So while the fans might feel this is a make or break game, the players aren't really thinking that.

Do the math, if philly wins:

Philly 4-1 including head to head over dallas
Dallas 2-2 including head to head loss to philly (1/2 game, I know what i'm talking about)

Yes they have played one more game, but it still would be a huge hole.

I agree. What makes this an important game is it is 1 of 5 remaining divisional games and those should always be looked at as important. I would agree this is no wheres close to being a do or die game regardless of the outcome.

Appeal for calm you ask?

Come on... if we lose... we should not be calm... calm is bad... we need to get mad...

We should get mad after every loss... not just "well ya gotta lose some anyways" like Jaguars game...

Attitude counts for alot.

With another game to be played in Dallas. This is a big game but win or lose this game is not a winner take all game. It is 1 game with many left to play.
