In regards to the 2016 QB thing, I keep seeing the thought that this is a bad draft for QB so nobody worth a top five.

Has anyone looked down the road?

Here are the current classes for the next three years per NFL Draft Scout.

In normal years, you are lucky if the top five even make a squad and contribute, so here goes:

2017 - Chad Kelly, C.J. Beathard, Joshua Dobbs, Seth Russell, Mitch Leidner
2018 - Deshaun Watson, Luke Falk, Brad Kaaya, J.T. Barrett, Mitch Trubisky
2019 - Josh Rosen, Jake Browning, DeShone Kiser, David Cornwell, Kyler Chryst

Looking at this, I see perhaps two players I would even think about as being potentially special down the road.

Yes, I know things can change, but typically the "sure fire franchise QB" is usually starting by their second season and ones like Luck, Manning, etc. are watched for at least a year or so before they can think about declaring early.

So if this year's three of Wentz, Goff and Lynch are undesirable, what about these?

It makes it even more insane to say, well, Romo has three more years, then start looking. Well, look at 2019. Are we going to pick at the top of the draft to snag Rosen?

Said it before, will keep saying it.

If you are waiting for an Aikman to drop out of the sky, forget it. Not going to happen in today's day and age where the term franchise QB is becoming about as stupid as the phrase "shutdown corner".

There is no "good time". There are going to be fewer and fewer strong "QB drafts".

You evaluate each year based on it's merits and looking at this, I think people are hoping something dramatic will happen.

Prior to the Winston/Mariota draft last year, there were three years with the top five chosen looking like this:

Bortles, Manziel, Bridgewater, Carr, Garoppolo
Manuel, Geno Smith, Glennon, Barkley, Nassib
Luck, Griffin, Tannehill, Weeden, Osweiler (Wilson was 6th)
Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Dalton (Kaepernick was 6th)
Bradford, Tebow, Clausen, McCoy, Kafka

So turn your nose up at this draft, but understand what is coming while doing so.

It really is a conundrum of what to do. I go back and forth weekly. I've been on the take Goff or Wentz at 4. Then I have recently been all about Ramsey. Now I have come full circle to where I started.
Find a trade partner - if, and only if you feel that all 3 of the QB's are fairly even. Try to get San Fran or someone to come up for one of the QB's, trade back and grab the 3rd. one, probably Lynch.
Of course you run the risk of someone jumping in front of you to snag the last of the 3.
There is so many ways to go this year, gonna be one of the more interesting drafts in years.

What will be charges in other years? It is hard to find all of that June 1st information, I would be curious to see.

Lets hope Romo's performance and durability keeps him on the roster for another 2-3 years. Regardless, QB is still an option at 4.

It would cost about 9mill in dead money for 2018 if we make him a June 1st cut in 2017.

2017 rolls around and yes - I release Romo, free up 14 mill and usher in the new age. This team needs a new identity. The Romo, Witten, Garrett trio of bromance needs to be gone. It hasn't worked, for what ever reasons. And yes, I'd look to replace Garrett and staff at the end of 2016, unless he manages to get us to the Divisional game at least.

You gonna Tick off the Cult of Romo-Witten-Garrett.. They don't like criticism.

Its just time for a change. A fresh look. Especially if we can get a starting caliber QB on the cheap, and drafting one in the first would be just that. Now maybe that guy doesn't pan out. Very real possibility. But I'm ready to take that chance.

But at what spot? If we "go for broke" and end up with a record around 8-8 (give or take 2 games based on injuries) we won't be picking near as high. I don't follow college ball enough to know what players are coming out in the next couple years but regardless, chances are you aren't going to have a top 5 pick to find out. We haven't earned this high of a pick with poor play since....Troy Aikman?

You are setting a future coach up giving him the 15th pick and expecting him to find a QB for the future.

Im just going to keep it real man, whatever gets Garrett out of town next year..I'm down for it. Yea 15 or higher may put the new coach in a tough spot, but I'm an optimist and I believe we can overcome that.

Only if his draft grade warrants that kind of commitment.

I keep seeing this kind of comment but rarely do I see what it appears to be alluding to.

Who are these people who are saying to take a QB that does not carry a high enough draft grade to merit choosing at our draft position?

The one player/ draft away crowd never look past the end of their nose. I have been saying for a while this QB draft class doesnt look bad compared to whats in the pipeline.

Anyone who thinks a 4-12 team is anywhere close to contending is not looking past the end of their nose.

I guess it feels better to have a romantic dream where Tony and Jason finally get their ring because we picked up those couple of players in one offseason to make it happen? I have no idea.

I've gone back and forth on the whole QB situation. Do we draft one in the first this year or go for broke and try to make a run at the SB?

As great as it would be to actually be in the hunt this year, I don't think we'll have the defensive chops to pull it off. And that's IF Romo can stay healthy all year...which I don't see happening.

Our defensive line is a wreck now. We have two above average players, Crawford and Lawrence. Neither have shown to be a super star, command double team type player. I have hopes that they can, but I'm not sure next year will be the breakout year. And as I've said many times, I think Crawford is playing out of position to begin with.

At LB, we have Sean Lee and some nice, young talent. But no one that really grabs your attention.

Secondary we have Scandrick and Thomas. Scandrick coming off surgery and not getting younger. Carr is slightly above average but not worth what he is getting paid. Church is a below average cover guy.

Offensively we have a very good o line. A number 1 WR with physical gifts but lacking in other areas. Our number 2 WR is not dependable. And our future HOF TE needs to be replaced, sadly to say. And we have a merely average RB, if he stays healthy.

So, I'm now back in the draft QB at 4 camp. Get the guy that can hopefully be Romo's replacement.

Cut Carr, Church and Witten this year. Draft their replacements. Find a couple good deal FAs this year to fill in the rest. I'm not writing off this year, I'm just not going all in.

Now you can work in the rookie QB this year. Preseason, spot duty. He'll have a full year to get used to the NFL.

I basically endorse this message. Unless major injuries occur to other teams I dont see the Cowboys being better than Carolina, Seattle, Arizona and likely Minnesota in the NFC in 2016.

You have 2 qbs with intelligence, arm, and accuracy, only injury or bad coaching can screw it up. It's time

I am not in any hurry to cut Romo or bring in the new era of qb quite yet. Yes I think we draft qb at #4 because that would be the smart thing to do. But after this season I have resigned to the fact that when Romo walks out the door the last time at Valley Ranch we will not have a good QB or team for a very long time.

2 franchise qb's were gift wrapped for Jerry Jones, Aikman and Romo, and Jerry rode them as much as he could to make as much money as he could and didn't build a winning team around Romo. HOF caliber qb in Romo has kept us average, just how bad it's going to be when Romo is gone. I don't think Jerry can build a team and he won't hire a coach to do it for him.

When Romo leaves it's going to be a lot more 4-12 seasons then 12-4 and I'm afraid that will be like that for a while regardless of draft positioning.
