In regards to the 2016 QB thing, I keep seeing the thought that this is a bad draft for QB so nobody worth a top five.
Has anyone looked down the road?
Here are the current classes for the next three years per NFL Draft Scout.
In normal years, you are lucky if the top five even make a squad and contribute, so here goes:
2017 - Chad Kelly, C.J. Beathard, Joshua Dobbs, Seth Russell, Mitch Leidner
2018 - Deshaun Watson, Luke Falk, Brad Kaaya, J.T. Barrett, Mitch Trubisky
2019 - Josh Rosen, Jake Browning, DeShone Kiser, David Cornwell, Kyler Chryst
Looking at this, I see perhaps two players I would even think about as being potentially special down the road.
Yes, I know things can change, but typically the "sure fire franchise QB" is usually starting by their second season and ones like Luck, Manning, etc. are watched for at least a year or so before they can think about declaring early.
So if this year's three of Wentz, Goff and Lynch are undesirable, what about these?
It makes it even more insane to say, well, Romo has three more years, then start looking. Well, look at 2019. Are we going to pick at the top of the draft to snag Rosen?
Said it before, will keep saying it.
If you are waiting for an Aikman to drop out of the sky, forget it. Not going to happen in today's day and age where the term franchise QB is becoming about as stupid as the phrase "shutdown corner".
There is no "good time". There are going to be fewer and fewer strong "QB drafts".
You evaluate each year based on it's merits and looking at this, I think people are hoping something dramatic will happen.
Prior to the Winston/Mariota draft last year, there were three years with the top five chosen looking like this:
Bortles, Manziel, Bridgewater, Carr, Garoppolo
Manuel, Geno Smith, Glennon, Barkley, Nassib
Luck, Griffin, Tannehill, Weeden, Osweiler (Wilson was 6th)
Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Dalton (Kaepernick was 6th)
Bradford, Tebow, Clausen, McCoy, Kafka
So turn your nose up at this draft, but understand what is coming while doing so.
