Here is how to make them interesting...make the preseason standings be the first tie breaker for teams with the same record at the end of the season.

I see where, you are going with this. Maybe make it like the 4th tiebreaker instead

They used to play a game that had the NFL champions vs. team of graduated college all stars as late as the 70s. While competitve in the 30s and 40s, they turned into such one-sided affairs that they were stopped in the mid-70s.

the Lombardi Packers lost to the college all-stars--just a stupid game that no pro cared to play in

Im talking powerhouses for one game, not Toledo. The starters will play only a series so potentially you have a Jesse Holley or Olgretree vs a Joe Hayden for most of game if Dallas played the Gators last preseason. Dunlap vs Mcquisten. Brandon Spikes. etc...Not as one sided as you would think. Remember this game isnt designed for Nfl 1st stringers to go against college 1's. Its really 2-3rd and 4th stringers. It would be a nice draft assessment too.

Why do we want to watch a game of NFL scrubs vs NFL unprovens? That wouldn't be anymore entertaining then what we already get from pre-season.

Second, you have 32 NFL teams. There are only a handful on teams that's best players could even play competently against nfl backups.

No to this because you'd be taking valuable snaps away from kids trying to make the team.

The preseason has nothing to do w/ competitiveness. It's all about evaluation and getting the rust off.

They should make the preseason matter for draft picks some-how. A combination for preseason record + reg season record = draft pick. Sort of like a pre-season win counts virtually as a reg season loss, hence giving you a higher pick.

So an example:
The Cowboys go 12-4 in 2010, but went 4-0 in the preseason when calculating the draft picks it counts as the Cowboys went 8-8, when there is more than one team with the record the team a coinflip occurs.

Another example:
The New York Football Giants go 12-4 in the regular season, but went 0-4 in the preseason, when calculating the draft picks it counts as if they went 16-0. Hence they will get an extremely late pick in the draft.

So simple:
A loss will negate a loss, a win will negate a win in the preseason.
This would add importance to the games.

Bad idea. By making preseason games this competitive, it would take away the talent evaluation aspect of preseason. Preseason is crucial for all the late round and UDFAs trying to make the team. It'll also wear out all the vets for the regular season and increase the chance of injuries.

There's a reason why preseason games count for nothing (not just in the nfl but in all professional sports). It's about getting the rust off but more importantly, it about player evaluation.

Muhast, why do we watch the combine? The game would be more a chance to view college kids in an NFL setting for draft purposes.

I like the tiebreaker rule you guys mention.

the nfl pre season would like out do the majority of the regular season games.. if UT took the cowboys to a final drive it would draw playoff numbers.

you cant do it though its like asking the best middle school to play a highschool team thats contending . the mid school kids would just get worn down and hurt
