Sorry it took me awhile to reply but this is correct.
A couple of "did you know":
1) In the first show, Barney made a comment to Andy about how happy he was to be given a chance to be a deputy. Andy replied, "That's the least that I can do for my cousin". But them being related was never mentioned again.
2) Ernest T Bass could never remember his lines, so he addlibed most of them.
3) Andy was supposed to be the "dumb" one with Barney being the "smart" one. But after the show started and it was seen how Don Knotts and Andy worked together, they flipped it.
Here's a couple more.
Mayberry is modeled after an actual North Carolina town called Mount Airy. So is Mount Pilot that they speak of often; a town called Pilot Mountain. I lived in Mount Airy for a while and even got my hair cut in the "original Floyd's Barber Shop." That really was the original owner's name.
Every year for "Mount Airy Days" celebrations Andy Griffith was the Grand Marshall of the parade. However, he took offense to something written in the newspaper and quit attending. Just about everywhere in town are autographed pictures of Andy and many of the other characters as well. Last I heard they had made up and he attends the celebrations again.
The Darling Boys were a real bluegrass band minus the Dad, Denver Pyle, who was a professional actor who went on to play Uncle Jesse in the Dukes of Hazard. The band's real name is The Dillards.
In the Mr. McBeevie episode Barney is excited to show Opie how his imaginary horse, Blackie, will nuzzle right up to him. In the show where Charlene tries to divorce Dudd Wash, Barney is allergic to horses.
