Four suspects have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a home invasion that began with an ad on Craigslist, Washington state authorities said Friday.

The case began when James Sanders and his wife posted an ad on Craigslist offering a diamond ring for $1,050, said Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. Sanders arranged to meet prospective buyers of the ring at the family's home, the prosecutor said.

"Two people show up and act like a couple looking for a ring for the mother-in-law," Lindquist said. But once they entered the house, he said, the man posing as the husband pulled out a handgun.
The victim, his wife, and their sons, ages 14 and 10, were restrained with plastic handcuffs, Lindquist said. Two other suspects then entered the home. One pistol-whipped the older son, he said.

Sanders broke out of his restraints and attempted to defend the 14-year-old, and was shot three times, the prosecutor said.
It's a shame that there are people in this world so sick in the head that they would do something like this. To come into someones house after being so graciously invited and tie them up like this is despicable. It is unfortunate that the man was shot to death because of these four criminals' greed.

However it must be pointed out that the two family who initially posted on Craigslist to be equally at fault for making such fatal mistakes when advertising. So hopefully no one will make the same crucial mistakes when posting online. If you are going to sell something or make a transaction of significant value DO NOT give your home address. That is inviting the greedy criminal low lives to come to your house. Meet at a neutral location in public, especially at a time when others will be around. Parking lot, Starbucks, mall are all good locations so as to prevent or minimize your risk.

"I understand you have a ring for sale?"

You guys are ****ed up for making me laugh in a thread like this.

We could stop this kind of thing if we would just kill the morons who do this. But instead, they will go on trial and IF found guilty will get to suck on the government dime for 10-20 years while they appeal and appeal and appeal.

If the justice was swift, it would cut down on a lot of this idiocy.

Doubt it. I don't think someone that would show up with plastic handcuffs, willing to club a 14 year old and kill someone rather than run because of a thousand dollar ring are thinking about how long they can survive on appeals.

The problem with that thinking comes when you have the wrong man for a crime, and then what? we bring him back to life and say im sorry? Courts have proven time and time again that mistakes can still be made. There is a reason for the appeals process and a reason why justice is not swift.

You have to be crazy to invite someone into your home to sell them anything especially jewelry. Craigs List is like a department store for crooks. The female had a guy with her when she showed up all it takes is some common sense. Anytime you sell anything to someone off the Internet you have to meet them in public like at a crowded parking lot or inside a Mall. I wouldn't sell anything where I can't thrown it in my car and transport it somewhere to set up a meeting.

Yeah, that's pretty stupid. Especially if you have kids.

I've sold things on craigslist and no one has ever seen the inside of my apt. I either meet them downstairs at the door or at a different location altogether.

People are going to keep doing stupid things and right things. You'd think by now people would stop using Craigslist. Hasnt there been previous murders due to this website?

I'm not sure, but I if I remember correctly some guy arranged to have his wife raped, through that craigslist ****. I'm sure some know how to use craigslist for it's intended purpose, but it seems to attract some real scumbags too.

Yep, a gay radio host in NY was killed by a teen kid he met on CL.

I bought some chick that I met on CL, a 300 dollar phone.

Hoping to hear from her soon.

Said she'd call me once she got it.

It's a very, very small percentage of cases. And yes, mistakes are made. They are made in all things. But 99.9% of the time they get the right person. On top of that, we have prisoners on death row who have admitted their guilt, yet are still breathing.

There is a .50 solution to that problem.

And I'm not saying do away with the appeals process. I am saying don't let it drag on for decade after decade. If you have been tried and convicted and you have had your one or two appeals denied, there obviously isn't anything you are going to find that will change your verdict.

Not all but most would. If people knew we were serious about enforcing our laws and going through with punishment most people wouldn't break the law. Just look at the illegal immigration problem we have in this country.

People are going nuts because Arizona just passed a law that simply upholds a federal law. Why? Because up to this point we haven't been enforcing our own laws. And surely we haven't been imposing the prescribed punishment.

Similar to the gun debate, craiglist doesn't kill, people kill

True.

And just like gun owners, users of craigslist can undertake certain steps to protect themselves.

You have far too much "faith" in the justice system to arrive at the correct verdict. I wouldn't say it is common to have murder convictions overturned but there seems to be a few cases every year up here.

I don't necessarily have a super strong view against capital punishment but I don't think it acts as much of a deterrent and I don't believe it can be applied in an equitable manner by judges or jury - they bring too much baggage to the table in their recommendations.

Yep, capital punishment has by far been seeked more often when the victim is white female.

I remember taking a law and psych class in 2004, and that was the year that the 1000th execution in the US since the death penalty was reinstated and read that groups like the Innocence Project have exonerated a lot.

Per Wiki:

"As of January 21, 2010, 249 defendants previously convicted of serious crimes in the United States had been exonerated by DNA testing. Almost all of these convictions involved some form of sexual assault and approximately 25% involved murder"
