Kevin Smith is the real deal and I pray that this guy is drafted by the cowboys. I did watch him play a few games this season and he is a great back. His forty time does seem suspect because he doesnt look like he is running at a 4.43 speed but I watched him break many tackles and he is not the kind to get caught from behind often. Remember he was basically the offense at central florida and they sometimes treated him like Earl Cambell with his carries. He actually almost broke the single season record this year.

Also, we must understand that Emmitt (and no I am not comparing them but I guess I am) couldn't run a consistent 4.5 at the combine.

Kevin Smith has excellent vision and cut back ability. He is not a straight ahead runner and has enough speed to get to the outside. Drafting Smith would allow Barber to continue to come off the bench.

Make no mistake about it, Smith is a HUGE upgrade over Julius Jones! I personally would rather him over Steward or Felix Jones, both of whom are rated higher than Smith.

Kevin Smith RB out of Central Florida

He had almost 1500 yards rushing and 19 TDs this year. Ripped apart Texas with 149 yards on 27 carries.

Mosley said the Cowboys were very high on him and expect him to be there in the late 2nd round.
I thought he broke Barry Sanders record or came close with about 2500 yards, think he fell short of the record because he got stuffed in their bowl game. He looks like an average back to me, I'll maybe take a flier in the 4th....

His official combine 40 was 4.43. Here's a few to compare him to.

D. McFadden 4.33
R. Mendenhall 4.45
J. Stewart 4.48
R. Rice 4.44
C. Johnson 4.27
F. Jones 4.47
S. Slayton 4.44
J. Charles 4.38

Wow. Ray Rice ran a better time than Felix Uger, I mean, Jones. And is just as fast as Slayton.

Grab that man in the second round.

i did some youtubin' to see what i could find on him... very elusive and has plenty of speed. additionally, he can break some tackles. played in a 'weak' conference, but i think his production (almost 2500 yards - which i did have incorrect in the first post-) is still impressive.

Draft Scout has Smith listed at 4.53 at the combine.

Every word true ! The two biggest factors for me when looking at a RB are vision and tackle breaking ability . K. Smith and R. Rice are the best in the running back class at this . I love the measurables and ability that guys like McFadden , Mendenhall , Stewart , and Jones bring to the table , but sign me up for one of these two consistent second round guys .

Out of curiousity, does Smith fumble "often", or is he secure with the football?

I wouldnt be impressed with ripping apart texas for that amount of yards... Texas was not playing the best LB tandem it had... Texas didnt correct this issue until its Bowl Game

Texas problem all year was against the pass, they were a good run defense. He did rip them up, and I was impressed by him for more than that game. Granted I haven't seen much of Ray Rice, but as I've stated many times I want Kevin Smith.

Texas gave up 2.9 yrds per rush for the entire year

I didn't see anything gimmicky about UCF so I'm not sure about the "system back" comment.

Kevin Smith ran for over 2,000 yards in 2007, not 1,500... They should really research things before blowing smoke.

If you want a RB just for his 40 time, bring in Michael Bennett ... he probably has the fastest 40 time for a RB ever. Of course, he's also been cut or traded by about 4 or 5 different teams.

I wouldn't mind him. He showed that he can run fast contrary to some reports. I think Mosely is guessing and trying to report it as fact (something he likes to do) because it's pretty apparent to me that Dallas wants a change of pace back. I would be more than happy with another Marion Barber type, but I don't think Dallas wants that style of tailback.

Drafting role players and "types" high in the draft is classic Jerry of the 1990's draft strategy, and how you end up with Kendall Watkins.

Dallas just needs to draft the best football player. Considering MB3 has never rushed for more than 205 carries in a season, whoever Dallas drafts as a RB better be ready to carry the ball 20+ times at a moment's notice. He should also have the ability to become a feature back in 2009 in case MB3 proves he's not deserving of franchise RB money.

Why is it apparent? I've seen nothing to indicate that, other than fans and writers guessing.

Smith is considered to be a second round back. He has adequate speed. I don't see him as being worth a second as I'm not sure he will translate to this level. Just seems borderline to me. I'd take a flyer on Rice before Smith. I could easily be wrong about him.
