Another Reason to Select Brooks

I hadn't considered this before, but something Cowlishaw wrote triggered the thought. At the end of this season we have potentially 3 big Free Agents to re-sign.

1. Jason Witten
2. Roy Williams
3. Bradie James

The top 2 guys will get big contracts. If Bradie has a big year, he's going to want one too and rightfully so.

Getting Brooks is a buffer against having to pay Bradie a huge contract if he outplays him, or is insurance for 2007 if he asks for too much and we have to cut the cord.

As much as I like Bradie, and it's a lot, we could be rolling the dice here.

I'd get Brooks if it were up to me. The potential reward > than the potential losses. Passing on him could also mean we're going to be looking ILB again in 2007. Not a risk worth taking IMO.

What is he "worth" in your opinion?

I think the Browns will use a 3rd round pick to get him.

Would you want the Cowboys to use their 2nd?

I wouldn't.

And one thing I've noticed about Parcells, he has little use for "fat guys", no matter the circumstances. And although Brooks' injuries may have played a part, his weight ballooning as it did can't sit well with the Tuna.

Although the James scenario you mentioned is something I considered as well, I'll be surprised if he's drafted by Dallas tomorrow.

As long as there is a viable replacement in the wings, I would have no issue with letting James walk away.

I don't know, how reliable that guy can be vs a guy who has been a team leader in college and seems to be on the way here in Dallas.

Granted I haven't seen enough of Ahmad Brooks to say that whether he is a really good player or not, personally, I never liked people with issues. They are always resurface sooner or later.

Interesting thought Hos.

You could even take this a step further and speculate that if Brady did indeed have a good year, the Cowboys could probably work a trade for a 3rd or better assuming we took Brooks this year.

If Bradie has such a good year to where he wants (and deserves) a big fat contract, I'm not gonna want to let him go! That's gonna mean that he kicked some major butt for us, and having a stud in the middle of the 3-4 defense isn't something I want to let go (especially in place of a big question mark)..

I'm tired of taking risks with bad attitude players. We've never had a problem paying players that produce, if Bradie has another solid year, he'll get a solid contract. He's not a pro-bowler, he won't break the bank. Bradie and Akin should be our ILB's for a while.

We haven't hit on enough 3rd rounders in the last decade to let one we actually hit on walk away.

Besides, I'd rather not replace the vocal heart and soul of our team with someone was kicked off his team in college for discipline and drug issues.

We are cap friendly. You don't pawn off a 4th or 5th year LB like James. We are Mega under cap and can easily fit Roy and Witten in. Heck we could always slap tag on if need be.

Red Flags on this player. I have done extensive reading up and scouting on this kid. Buyer beware. He is not what Ireland/Parcells are looking for - JMO

He's a 7th round pick that some team is going to pull a Clarett on.

We are not way under the cap. We are OK under the cap but Roy is not gonna be cheap. Neither is Witten and the year after that, you got Newman. There are a lot of young players coming up on contracts in the next few years. I am not in favor of shipping Bradie of anywhere but you also gotta look at the long term picture.

Not saying we are taking Brooks, just looking at all the possible scenarios.

Just to add to today's speculation:

John Clayton is saying he thinks Brooks can be had for a 6th to SF. Believes the Fins will pass on him
Ryan (MN): Why is Brooks value so low? I would think someone would give up a 3rd or 4th to get a stud MLB?

John Clayton: (4:32 PM ET ) Because of the off-the-field issues, Brooks will go as a bargain. The good thing for the 49ers is that he is working hard and will have a chip on his shoulder.

That settles it then!

He'll go to Cleveland in the 3rd round!

I'd do that in a second but I don't believe Poindexter knows his arse from a hole in the ground so...... you know....... there is that.

I thought that Shanle had a pretty good year last season before he got hurt, not sure if he's a bonafide starter yet though...but I'd rather stick with him that roll the dice on a guy like Brooks given his track record.

We are loaded right now at LB, and even if we lose Bradie James to FA next year we have a lot of young guys like Shanle waiting in the wings to replace him. Keep a close eye on Hoyte/Parham as well....after a year on the practice squad both have enough raw talent to make a roster in the NFL.

Bradie was a 4th rounder, but I get what you're saying. Football is a business though and some times teams will hedge their bets.

Not an easy question Stash. Then again, I don't think you intended it to be.

I don't believe the Browns will use a 3rd on him. I could be wrong. There's no way to know for sure. Taking the guy is a risk. I don't deny that. I happen to like this risk.

I think we'd offer as high as a 4th for him, but will offer a 5th hoping the other teams go 6th or 7th round. If it was up to me I would offer a 3rd. In a heartbeat.

Football potential wise he's got 1st round talent. That hasn't been disputed.

Would I go 2nd round if I'm Parcells? Only if Groh was telling me "do it." The question is, will he say that?

This player was a nightmare to Groh and his program. Groh kicks him off his team and is going to have the Balls to tell Parcells to use a 2nd rounder on him?

I can't fathom losing a day 1 draft pick in next year draft for this kid. Pass, Pass, Pass
