The Chargers have Jammal Williams, who is by far and away the best 3-4 NG in the league. No other NG draws constant double teams and triple teams on passing plays and stunts as much and as effectively as Williams does. From there, they also have Luis Castillo who is an incredible DE who can also pass rush, almost like a Richard Seymour type. Overall Merriman is a good player, but he's really the 3rd best defensive player on the Chargers squad and he's not nearly as versatile as Ware. If we drafted Merriman instead of Ware, my guess is that his sacks would be around the same as Ware's right now because we simply don't have a Jammal Williams or Luis Castillo on defense.

Well then the question becomes "What were we doing while SD was picking up Williams and Castillo?"...

Hindsight being 20/20, I wish we took Castillo over Spears, although Spears still shows some good potential. But Spears looked like one of the best D-Linemen at the Senior Bowl and that was still dealing with a knee injury he was recuperating from. Not to mention Spears had a great reputation at LSU and was coached by Saban. Castillo looked good at the combine, but tested positive for steroids, so I can see why they went with Spears. The real big bad draft pick I think we made was going after Kevin Burnett when we could've had Khalif Barnes instead. Burnett has been a decent backup while Barnes, who looked great at the combine and the Senior Bowl is a solid starting left tackle. We needed to address the RT spot in 2005 and we really didn't. We could've used Barnes at RT and then probably switch him over to LT when Flozell was gone. Instead we took Burnett who probably will never start over James and it wouldn't surprise me if he gets beat out by Carpenter next season (and I actually think Carpenter will give James a run for his money next season if he stays healthy).

Wasn't there a team that was looking at taking Hatcher as a sleeper pick when we did, I remember thinking why did we take him here and then it came out. On McNeil, maybe the Cowboys thought they would get that extra pick, then select him, but S.D. beat them to it. I don't think our draft was as Bad as some of you do and I Gotta Believe it will be addressed in this years FA (Steinbach?) and Draft.

We had no idea how Columbo would turn out, and Adams was recouping from knee surgery. Flo is still struggling, and would be on the bench if McNeil was on the team. Marcus will be Pro-Bowl material for years to come. FA is on the downside of his career, and is doubtful to ever get another free trip to Honolulu.

You could have said that about McNeil OR ANOTHER OTHER PLAYER you would have drafted. Everyone is an expert or had a better pick and the results are in.

this thread should be titled "lets see how many excuses Cowboy fans can come up with"

or "lets see how many fans actually think every move the Boys make is the right move".

the fact is the medical staff must have gave the green on Jacob Rogers or Parcells decided to ignore them... that was a mistake just like drafting a slow backup TE over your LT of the future!!!

Parcells the GM strikes again...

Do you ever talk normally? You know, with fewer exclamation marks?

Seriously, hindsight is 20/20. You guys harp on every little thing.

Ok, say we picked up McNeil. Let's also say that we didn't pick up Romo, It works both ways ya know. So, who would you rather have:

Romo or McNeil?

You gotta understand that while we make draft day mistakes, we also make some great choices. TAke the good with the bad.

I’m an Irish guy, I liked the pic. I do admit though, we had more pressing needs. With Witten on the team, TE wasn’t a great need. Our OL and DL aren’t very good, it’s an area that needs serious attention. With the emergence of Romo, our OL has looked better, but I wouldn’t say this line is great.

you're right... TE wasnt a pressing need but not only that TE was the deepest position of the draft... The Broncos and Pats picked up talented TEs after the Cowboys blew their pick on a slow back up TE who cant block much better than Witten if at all!

I just hate being lied to by the Jerry who made it a point to defend his Boy and let every media outlet know that BP is running 2 TEs! This team did not need a TE after drafting one in 04 (lets not forget the 3 year rule), signing TE off the Ravens practice squad (apply the 3 year rule here too) and another in Free Agency...

the fact is BP never intended on running a 2 TE set...he just wanted to draft a player his coaches couldnt srew up!!! someone like McNeil would have been a bust just like all the other OLman this team has drafted in the BP era!!!

the funny thing is IF the Boys never drafted Romo instead BP wanted BJ Tucker, Justin Bates and Zuriel Smith u may have a point!

but the fact is ROMO became a Cowboy because of Sean Peyton and the fact the boys had Q and Hutch at QB. Romos confidence in beating those guys out down the road played more of a role than your "Good with the Bad" approach to building a roster!

He was even offered more money by the Broncos and only an uninformed HOMER can give BP and Jerry credit for ROMO being signed back in 03!!!

that will be 19.99!!!

And people wanted us to take Leftwich....where's he at?

All of this crying over who we took or didn't take in the probowl has always been stupid.....even when talking about Moss.

there was no way after the Rogers mess that we were going to put a high draft choice on another OT with a medical question mark. As I recall, its a neck thing- and its something that can happen at anytime; now, next week or not for 15 years. It was the right move with what was known at the time; you do recall how many first rd and second rd O linemen do not exactly shine.
We can make all the excuses we want to try in justify it,but the reality is that the Cowboys screwed up.

i disagree on the mcneil pick. if we pick him he sits here. same with fasano, he doesn't get many touches because he's the 4th option at best on passing downs. doesn't mean he's a bad pick. it just means we're loaded on offense. mcneill would've been nice but so is mcquistan and he's spent the whole season inactive. i'm ok with fasano and still think he'll eventually become a major contributor on offense.

By the way how is Antonio Cromartie doing for the Chargers, I haven't heard much about him. Maybe he's injured or something but I really liked him coming out of college and would have liked us to have drafted him. I know he also had some injury concerns comin out.

Hate to make excuses, but McNeil had medical concerns coming out of college.A lot of teams did not want to risk a high draft choice on him.If not for the medical question marks McNeil would have been a first round draft pick IMO.The chargers took a chance and came up big winners.

Exactly nobody questioned his talent but there was talk he may never be able to play because of an injury.

Cant blame them for not taking him in the 2nd round.
