not sure how credible but.......................

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/09/26/lions-williams-on-the-market/

Despite an 0-3 start and a little thing called the salary cap that prevents them from paying top dollar to two elite wideouts, the Lions claim that they don’t plan to trade receiver Roy Williams.

On Thursday, new G.M. Martin “I’m Sad My Longtime Friend And Boss Got Fired But I’m Happy I Got His Job” Mayhew announced the team’s intentions, but at the same time indicated that he would listen to any offers.

That tells us that the Lions are trying to get the word out that Williams is available, without losing any leverage.

As the season already looks like a lost cause for the Lions and given the presence of several high-end teams who might be able to utilize Williams’ services in search of a Super Bowl title, franchises like the Cowboys, Eagles, and even the Giants (especially with the Plaxico Burress situation) would be wise to call Mayhew, and Mayhew would be wise to take the best offer he can get.

Williams is in the final year of his rookie deal. Second-year receiver Calvin Johnson is an emerging force. As the Cardinals have learned the hard way, it’s impossible to pay two high-end receivers market value.

The other possibility would be to keep Williams through 2008, slap the franchise tag on him in February, and trade him for a 2009 draft pick. The risk with that approach is that, if Williams suffers a serious injury over the next 13 games, he’d have far less trade value.

P.S. dont shoot the messenger .............:)

If Drew Rosenhaus continues to make alot of noise, I can easily see either Lito/Plaxico being dealt before the trade deadline.

Either way-I wouldn't trade anything for RW Roy-he's going to be a FA next year, and it's no guarantee we'll give him the $$$$ he wants by then.

One thing that I noticed that is a small hole on the logic:

Williams is in the final year of his rookie deal. Second-year receiver Calvin Johnson is an emerging force. As the Cardinals have learned the hard way, it's impossible to pay two high-end receivers market value.

If that's the reason that he's on the way out, we would be in the same position, as would the Giants. Paying two marque players is still going to be tough for either us the Lions or the Giants.

That being said, I think it simply boils down to the fact that he doesnt want to be there, will not resign when his contract is up, and they might as well get some value while they can.

To follow up my above post, click the link and read the story that is 2 down from the Roy Williams.

"I was shocked, man, I was really shocked,'' Holt said. "I went up to Marc immediately and apologized to him as a receiver and for our receiver group and the offense for not making enough plays to give him an opportunity to stay on the football field with us.''

Tell me you wouldnt want that type of attitude on our team. The man has no talent around him and can still be a force for another few years.

Yes we give up potential/ceiling as opposed to Roy Williams, but I think Torry Holt is the more complete receiver and will help this team more...Just my .02

If we could get him for a 3rd or 4th rounder, he is my number one choice.

Just a head's up...this won't be the last "rumor" that he really is on the market. There will be more coming.

That doesn't mean a trade will happen, but there's more speculation coming. No, I'm not guessing.

Plax is not going to get traded. He just signed a new deal and they're not goign to eat that money just to appease him.

Yeah, he's ok I guess. He hasn't been that great recently, he's kind of a product of a guy who gets thrown so many balls that he has to put up decent numbers but the value is not so much - like Braylon edwards last season.

But he is a likable guy. I still don't get the infatuation with trading for a WR, but whatever. If it happens it happens - I don't think it needs to happen when we can just sign Williams in the offseason, give up zero draft picks and gear up for another super bowl run.

Instant gratification is overrated.

I doubt very seriously anything gets done during the season.

I will never expects big mid-season trades until they actually start happening.

Teams usually trade small car parts. You don't ever see the engines get dealt.

If Roy comes back home than it will be in February, March, or April.

If TO goes down or if TO is not 100% come playoff time(like last year)... the run is over.

Free Agency won't start in February. March is a possibility. So is prior to October 14th. A very real possibility in fact.

Oh, undoubtedly.

Also if Tony Romo goes down, or DeMarcus Ware goes down, or the team plane crashes into a mountain, if any of those things happen the run is over.

Let's start preparing for all those hypothetical situations, too.

I don't remember the details, but I vaguely remember on draft day that he was happy about leaving the state of Texas, and not winding up with the Texans or Cowboys. Of course he has to be politically correct towards the team that drafted him (he isn't John Elway), so it may be that this is what he was told to say.

I'll give you Romo
I'll not give you Ware
I'll not comment on 3rd one

Bottom line: TO was brought in to take this team to THAT LEVEL. Romo was a great find and ROMO knows that if TO goes down its over. Difference in your post and mine is... there is a chance to get some insurance behind TO. No so much with Romo.

This theory is complete horseshat.

Teams can "afford" to keep quite a few top rated players.

Detroit has few PB players and even fewer All-Pro players.

They can't afford not to pay both these players what they are worth.

They can't afford not to build around and accentuate this strength.

The Lions are fools if they don't go to him now and work out a deal. He may want to leave Det, he may want to go back to Texas.

But a lot can happen in 13 games. If Det offered an 8 yr 80mil type deal with 30 mil SB, basically lifetime financial security, how could he turn it down and risk injury only to get a similar deal in FA.

Seems like this rumor is picking up steam, and for good reason. The Lions really have little incentive to keep Roy if we, or some other team, put a good offer on the table.

I have two concerns, though, and will provide my counter-thoughts thereafter:

1) Chemistry. Roy is a somewhat prolific player, but it could take some time for Romo to get on the same page as him. Is it worth risking the current chemistry to bring him in, because you know you'll see some 'what in the world?' passes headed Roy's way early in his tenure here due to them being on a different wave length.

2) We can't overrate Roy. He's a good receiver, no doubt. But he's never been a huge TD scorer, has had trouble staying healthy and has only posted one 1,000-yard season if I'm not mistaken. Is he really a guy that takes us over the top?

Now, as for the chemistry, my counter thought would be that the reality of getting Roy is it's not a move to make us even tougher to beat in Week 10, but a long-term move for not only this season, but the future for when TO starts to wear down. But it could certainly impact this season, potentially even allowing us to sustain a higher level of offensive success late in the season and into the playoffs. Not to mention it safe guards us for if TO were to go down.

As for Roy being overrated, yeah, I think some here overrate him. I'm not sure it's "Game Over" if we acquire him (not sure he's THAT good). But he is an undeniable upgrade over Crayton, a young player that could slowly get more looks as TO gets older and would undoubtedly make us better if he can stay healthy.

Sorry for the long post, just some rambling thoughts at this hour.

We have what, 2 weeks until the trade deadline? Nothing is going to happen during the season.
