During training camp, Parcells was asked about having acquired Henry to put on the other side from Newman (where there was a revolving door in 2004). Parcells said he was the best they'd had since he's been here. He never stated whether he meant the best cornerback or just the best right cornerback, but several reporters interpreted it to mean Parcells saying he was better than Newman.

I remember that

reporters...

I have the Chargers game on tape. Give me the stats from that game only and I'll review it tongiht and see if its right.

Against San Diego, Newman allowed three catches on seven attempts for 43 yards. Henry allowed six catches on 13 attempts for 79 yards and an interception.

Newman allowed an 18-yard catch by Parker, a 16-yard catch by McCardell and a 9-yard catch by Caldwell.

Henry did as well as he deflected a fade pass to McCardell (IIRC) that would've given SD the lead. I had Henry giving up 5 catches for 67 yards in that game. That's not really getting "picked on" by my account. Especially since I believe they were like 5-13 throwing Henry's way (IIRC). They may have been targeting Henry, but they weren't having great success doing so.

My reference to Henry getting "picked on" was about the San Diego and New York games combined, when the Chargers and Giants threw at Henry a combined 23 times. That's an enormous amount of passes thrown at him, which is why he had the chance to make a lot of plays. (For comparison, Newman never had more than eight passes thrown his way in any game last season. In 10 games, the opponent threw four or less at him.)

Ahhh. I think your interpretation of the phrased "getting picked on" is probably different from mine. While I think more highly of the CB that doesn't get thrown at very often because teams are afraid of him, I don't dock somebody for getting thrown at quite often if the opposing offense isn't very efficient in doing so.

Compared to Newman, Henry got picked on. But the way I interpret it is that the Chargers tried to test Henry and when all was said and done the plan didn't work very well.

Rich..............
had it wrong, the "prayer pass" by Brees was completed to Parker, not McCardell
