Anthony Spencer: If You're Wade, What Would You Do?

This is what you do in response to him getting arrested?
Yeah, because Wade isn't the GM, nor is he Goodell... Wade's responsibility is to make the team better, and playing Spencer more does exactly that... Tema continuity is established on the practice field and during games... If Wade gives him a fine, than I'd be OK with it, because it doesn't impact what Spencer does on the field and it was also in the off-season. Plus, it'll make Spencer think twice before doing stuff like that again...

Spencer gave Wade a great gift ... The perfect opportunity to show everyone that his change to a more disciplined approach this year is legit. If he doesn't take advantage of it, no one is going to take him seriously.
The question is what should Wade do, tho?

In these days and times of the NFL, players aren't generally suspended for an arrest, much less something that happens 6 mos before the training camp and 8 mos before the season starts again.

I think he'll be fined by the league under the personal conduct policy. Not sure what the team can do over and above that...besides maybe a heavier fine.

Yeah I was gonna say a game or two... but doesnt Goodell have to weigh in on this as well?

Either way... 1 game from Cowboys... probably atleast 2 from Goodell.

Goodell better not suspend him. Santonio Holmes arrest last year was his 3rd and he didn't get suspended.

I'm not a fan of this thinking.

At 24, he's a man. He might be immature, but he's no longer a kid. And the expectations of him should be those of a man, not a teenager.

I'm ok with the discipline, because that's about all the team and the NFL will do to him.

Agree with the first part, esp after the kiddie fine he got in TC for skipping rehab. Not the second. He's not a kid anymore, and as a result, he's responsible. Period.

Well I am not gonna argue with you two about this ..... but in my "old job" I had to train hundreds of 18-26 year old kids in the most serious job of all.

I like this. It would send a strong signal without overly harming the team or going overboard for a first, relatively (relative to other NFL player 'incidents') minor offense.

I already knew the basis from which you drew your position. And I think even then after a certain age, the "kid" label no longer applies.

But I respect your decision not to "argue" about it. :)

You do remember he is a Cowboy right........

Fine him the max amount allowed ...... and then put him back to work (but deep in the doghouse)

He is a kid ...... he can still grow up.

Yep. He got into a stupid fight in the offseason, no need to go overboard. But let him know and make it crystal clear that he's on thin ice.

YAKUZA

I would suspend Spencer for two games, then I would retire and recommend Shanahan or Spagnuolo to replace me.

No one would ever take Wade seriously.

Beyond that, great post.

I think if I were actually Wade I would say something like "When you go out there, your mistakes are on me. Blame me and just please try harder in the future. Now, I'm gonna have to fine you - stick 5 dollars in the naughty-jar on the way out." *pats Spencer on the bottom*

The old rule of thumb was if a kid smoked a cigarette, to make them smoke an entire carton in one sitting. After that point they either never wanted to smoke again or needed the patch to quit their newfound addiction.

I say Wade takes Spencer drinking, makes him stay up real late getting completely hammered until he passes out, then takes him back to his house, strip both down to nothing and sleep in the same bed. When Anthony wakes in the morning, he may decide never to drink again. Or that he likes fat white guys and then we'd have a whole new problem.

I would suspend him 2 games.

That preempts what Goodel will do which is probably just that and sends a message at the same time.

Exactly. Arrests are never a good thing, but this is about the most harmless one possible.

And as far as Wade being more strict, I take that to mean regarding practice, meetings, being on time, penalties, that kind of thing. Not a weak off-field arrest.

And to me, track record does mean something. Mosley, JFE, and Galloway all said the other day that they've never seen or even heard of any kind of bad behavior from Spencer before. By all accounts, this is not a problem kid.

A one-game suspension would be fine, I guess. But I'd hope we were opening with a weak opponent.:

It seems to me Goodell is in fact suspending players for arrests that occur during the off-season. This is a guy who suspended Wade Wilson 5 games for using a banned substance to deal with his legit medical conditions.

Banned substance is different from personal conduct.

And if you haven't noticed, the number of suspensions have gone down since he took over. The amount of fines have risen, tho for both on-field and off-field conduct.

Have you seen him suspend someone with no previous personal conduct issues? I also think his discipline is subject to the level of the actual incident.

SOme of you guys are crazy and hold players to standards that are astronomical. Cousel him and fine him enough to get his attention. It doesn't even need to be made public. This is between Spencer and Wade/Jerry.

I believe the Steelers publicly reprimanded & suspended Santonio Holmes for a game in mid season after he got a misdemeanor possession of marijuana in which he was completely cooperative with police.

But what does that organization know about winning?

Also, didn't we see Spencer getting suspended in Hard Knocks for skipping rehab assignment, under some lame excuse of having to get his electricity turned on or something? And didn't Spencer's return from injury take significantly longer than expected? And hasn't Spencer pretty much been a disappointment his first two years in the league? Spencer is quoted as saying "Who cares?" after police informed him he would be arrested. Never would I have thought two words could have so adequately described this personality and disposition of this team and organization.
