That was good. 100%. I think I did the same action when I read that post.

This could be the last contract he ever lands, he will probably go to whoever offers him the most. And I wouldn't blame him.

He's not getting any big offers out there. The saints don't have any money either.

The problem is the number of roster spots available.

Sure-things are Mincey, Lawrence and Hardy.

Then you add a probable draft pick and Gardner. That's 5 DE's.

No space for the guy.

If he came back for one year with little guaranteed money, I could live with him competing for that fourth spot. It's better than possibly just giving it to Gardner or a rookie who doesn't earn it.

If all our ends stay healthy, it's very possible the fourth one won't get much playing time, but I like to prepare for the possibility of losing one for a long period of time, or the suspension that is likely for Hardy.

Great point gimmesix. If Hardy misses any time due to suspension they will need him.

If we wanted to keep Spencer from visiting other teams all we would have to do is put an OT in front of him.

Best one I've heard in a long time!...and I like Spencer too. I think he'd be a decent rotational guy at the right price.

Solid stop gap. Everyone expected him to be Ware Jr... Lofty expectations. I'd take him back for 1y/3m for depth.

Ehhh...I don't care either way.

If he goes no big deal to me.

If he stays for cheap as part of a rotation I'm fine with that as well.

I think you nailed it. I read the 4th DE played 5% of the snaps last year.

Spencer leaving the Cowboys does not makes them better by subtraction. Spencer is not an all pro but he is serviceable and fills a roll on this team.

Probably not going to have the roster space for him.

If Hardy had not been signed I could see adding Spencer.

But with Hardy, Lawrence and Mincey that's 3 locks right there.

Add another draft pick and Gardner from last year and that's 5... And that doesn't count Crawford or the kid they picked up from Seattle.

And at DT there's an army of guys competing there.

There simply aren't enough open roster spots for him... and he's a progress stopper at this juncture.

I kinda liked what I saw from J. Crawford. Wouldn't sleep on him.

If the money is right then Spencer will stay IMO. Demands on his offers elsewhere. That's a good rotation. If they add another DE then he will have a chance to compete and learn. I think Gardner can play the 3 but I expect him to go to the PS this year. That's not a lock either way. He could also surprise. There is a lot of competition on the DL this year except at DE at the moment. I expect an unknown or two to surprise.

But is that by design? Or because our 4th DE was useless? Both Mincey and Hardy have been used inside on pass rushing downs so I can see how a better 4th DE might see more snaps

If we don't draft a DE and no one signs him any time soon, I'd take him back with little to no guaranteed money and let him compete in training camp. If he happens to beat out Gardner or something then Gardner can go on the practice squad.

let him go, get the comp pick next year, hopefully they overpay but i guess 1 year 4m approx

Depending on which formula is correct, the Cowboys would get a 5th round comp pick (basically a high 6th) for Spencer if his contract was worth more than 4.2MM annually. At this point I would take that and develop Gardner and a draft choice instead. I like Spencer and think he still has gas in the tank, but it does seem like the ship has sailed.

Spencer is one of my favorite Cowboy players over the past decade. A true Cowboy through and through.

I hope he stays and helps win us a Championship, he's got alot of good football left in him. Guy fights every play.
