Dallas gave him a chance and he wasn't able to return to form.
I never liked the pick.
He was an experiment from the Parcells 3-4 era.
Parcells never worked out..
the 3-4 never worked out and Spencer never worked out.
Sorry.
Well, I respectfully disagree that Dallas gave him a 'real' chance. Yeah, Spencer played last year. He also was rushed back after a 'career ending' type surgery that most people agree takes a couple seasons to come back from. Due to the dismal state of our DL, Spencer did everything the FO asked of him and returned as soon as he could. He even admitted he wasn't 100%, but he wanted to help in anyway he could. And the eye ball test confirms this, as he was starting to be a force towards the end of last season.
(On to the rest of your comments) I'll admit I wasn't all in with the pick either, exp w/the picks we gave up to get him (not to mention who we traded with).... but that's not Spencer's fault.
I'll agree Parcell's never worked out and I was never in favor of the 3-4 scheme.. we won championships playing the 4-3, we will do it again.
But to say Spencer was an experiment and never worked out is ridiculous.. Spencer was awesome at Purdue in the 4-3, but was converted to the 3-4 after being drafted. If he had gone to another team running the 4-3, or better yet..had Dallas never switched to the 3-4 in the first place, "almost Anthony" probably would have had a few more skins on the wall by now. As luck would have it though, he was asked to be more of a run stopper(which he excelled at btw) because of a certain HOF pass rushing Ware on the opposite end. When he was asked to rush more in 2012 bc of Ware's injury's... He had 11 sacks in 14 games and was named to the Pro-Bowl.
Unfortunately for him, his major injury in the prime years of career is a tough one.. but luckily for him, Dallas was desperate for pass rushers and so he got paid anyway. Its naïve to brush him off and say he never worked out. Injuries happen to the best of them.(see Romo, Ware, Manning, Peterson, etc..) My guess/opinion.. If Spencer has a chance to play his natural position, under Marinelli's defense, when 100%... we wouldn't have had to sign Hardy. Either way, this is all a mute point bc the FO isn't willing to pay good money to a player on the wrong side of 30. They'd gladly take him back for the vet min I'm sure, but like Murray.. this is a business and Spencer needs to take the money while he still has a chance. I have a $5 wager he has an above average season on another team this year. My guess is he will rejoin Rob Ryan in NO or join a 4-3 team that's already good. (I.e- Panthers) now wouldn't that be fate if Spencer ends up going to Carolina and have a good season replacing Hardy..
