Looking for opinions on him. I know he is learning a whole different position in a new defense, but I just thought we would be hearing a bunch more about him. I have heard Wade talk optimistically about him. Any opinions from what you have seen?

He's a rookie learning a foreign position, I would be happy with him just understanding his assignments first then concentrate on becoming a catalytic player...

Because most college teams don't run 34s. That means that 4.6 260 pound OLBs for the 34 are usually playing DE in a 43 in College.

I did not see last nights game, But based on the first 3 I do not think he is ready, but we may not have much of a choice.

From what I have observed he really has trouble getting off blocks, and often gets out of position, especially on defending the run.

I think most of this is because he is thinking so much and trying to figure out what to do. I really have only seen one pass rush move in the first 3 games I was impressed with.

I like Spencer, I think he is going to be good, but I think he still needs time for things to come to him so he can play smart but aggressive.

He has the physical tools, he just lacks the proper technique. Considering he is learning a new position and making the transition from college to the NFL. It's going to take some time. He isn't ready to be a starter, but the Cowboys don't have a lot of options with Ellis out.

I thought he looked good in the Denver game. All over the QB, but never got a sack. he rushed Cutler into incompletions a few times though.

Figure that he's going to be like that early on... disruptive on occasion, but inconsistent.

Hmmm, well you saw something I definetly did not see, and I went back and watched Spencer on every snap.

He had one play that the O-Lineman blocked down on the wrong guy leaving Spencer with a free run at the QB, then he missed the sack. He did nothing on this play any defender in the NFL could have done, He did have 1 spin move that was the only pass rush move I have been impressed with all season and hit the QB. The whole rest of the game he was stone walled.

You also have to consider that the Denver game was the one where our defense showed the most in terms of pressure and blitzing. It's still preseason folks. Hard to make a definitive judgment on a guy at a new position based on some preseason action.

I've always wondered why some industrious college coach looking to revive a program doesn't push hard to be the premier 3-4 team on the college level. It would seem to be a built in advantage for recruiting. Pipeline to the NFL, using a defense that at 1/4 of the league uses at least occasionally.

I do not think this is accurate. Spencer is a rookie, yes. The Cowboys have given him a lot of work in the Pre-Season.

If you have watched him, it is not hard to see he is not ready to make an impact. It is real easy to see he is not getting off blocks, and he is really thinking a lot out there instead of playing.

Pre-Season or not that can be seen.

All this means is he is not ready, not that he is a bust. This is somewhat expected, he just needs to get to a point he can play with aggression.

Hopefully that will not be much longer, because it looks like we will really need him.

Right now I would settle for just being where he is supposed to be until it becomes natural for him.

Nothing special so far. Every college DE is essentially a project in the 3-4, hence his slow progress. But with Ellis out, we can't afford the learning pains.

Ok...here goes nothing.....Carpenter should be starting over Spencer at this point of the season....The work Spencer has received over the last 2 months will help him tremendously as he continues to adjust to a new postion...but Carpenter is better at the point of attack which Spencer seems lost at times...

What do you not think is accurate again??

I never said Spencer was ready to be a terror Week 1. I just don't think he's been all that bad. With Ellis out, and Carp's status uncertain, you're right, we're going to need him.

Is he going to look like the DROY Week 1? doubtful. But is he going to be terrible and a complete liability? I don't think so. I think teams are going to have to worry about him on the pass rush at least, unlike Singleton.
