I am planning the carpet for my home theater (23' x 15'), a snack room (11' x 13.5'), and a standard set of stairs. Included in the theater is a stage (5.5' x 15' at it's deepest), and a riser (6' x 9.5').

The stage is a separate carpet from the rest, but everything else is the same.

I was told it would be 110 square yards to carpet all of this. This seemed very high to me. They said the stage alone would be 31 square yards. I have no idea how that's possible. At worst, it shouldn't take more than a single 12' (width of the roll) x 15' piece of carpet, which would only be 20 sq. yds.

Is it possible they are aiming to have as much waste as possible so they can overcharge me for labor?

Two simple "words to live by" whenever you do ANY home improvements, repairs etc....

COMPETING BIDS

You're welcome! ;)

Carpet is cut from a giant roll that is 12 feet wide. In order to make it look right, they have to cut it a certain way to hide the seams better.

I realize this, but I still think their number is way excessive (see my comment on the stage). I don't see how it would be much more than 80 yds.

Take the dimensions to Home Depot and Lowes. Ask their carpet people how much carpet you need. It won't cost you anything but a little time and give you reason for concern or peace of mind.

Home Depot people are worthless. They farm it out to a third party.
