He played much better versus the Fins. I would recommend watching the game. He started using a bull rush that was working to counter them sitting on his outside move.

The Ickes gif is one example of it.

When I look back at game footage it is clear they are limiting his playtime. I know that high ankle injuries run the gambit for recovery time and could very well be next season until he is correct. I must of missed the media that normally follows our high draft picks.
Any educated opinions on Gregory and his slow return to form

Playing behind an all pro like Hardy will limit your snaps. Just ask Bennet, Fasano, Hanna, and Escobar

Help out an uneducated injury expert here .... when I hear " high ankle sprain " it usually doesn't mean a sprain at all yes ?
I seem to recall that a lot of players who get this dreaded injury actually tear ankle ligaments isn't that why it is an injury that lasts so long, and takes so long to return from.
If that is in fact the case, then it's easy to see why a rookie would struggle coming back off of that ...

Sprain refers to tearing of ligaments. So it is a sprain

Asking for an "educated opinion" from this crowd is always dicey. You'll get it but it will be so hidden in the weeds it may be hard to see.

DLaw had the same issue but came along in the playoffs. Gregory just need more snaps and confidence.

The injury and the league adjusting to him. I'm not concerned. His play is improving. I predict he will notch 4 sacks in the remaining 6 games.

Gregory never had much of a chance to gain his form he was hurt in the season opener and the games and practices he missed hindered his progress. He still may not be 100%. I said when he was injured that his rookie season may end up being a wash so I'm not surprised that he's done little since his return. A rookie can't afford to miss practices and games or they'll get way behind

Charles Haley said the same thing in camp. Charles knows more than us about it, so for now I'll go with his opinion. A week ago he said he didnt see improvement on film, but maybe he has an agenda. Why dont you ask him.

I wouldn't ask Haley a thing. Never cared for him as a person or a player. The quintessential mercenary. And yes, I am sure he doesn't want to see his legacy challenged.

Maybe he's just not that good yet.

I think he was a project right from the start.

He's undersized and under strengthed and it was obvious he was a 3 rd down guy right from the beginning..

Same thing as our # 2 pick from last year.

If we get a high draft pick I see us drafting a DE and not resigning Hardy to clear more cap for a couple of FAs for the defense.

We are still nowhere being contenders with our defense the way it is.

I don't recall seeing many DEs use their reach like Gregory does in that gif...with just one arm. Would his bull rush be more effective if he used both hands?

You use one arm to make yourself skinny, you turn sideways, and long, rotating your shoulder out like that gives you that extra shoulder width of length versus a guy whose shoulders are square. He was using proper technique I think. I've seen Marinelli have his guys do that and it is a common technique in general.

An sprain results from tearing of the ligaments. With a typical inversion sprain, where the ankle "rolls out" you tear the ligaments on the outside of the ankle joint, and those tend to heal relatively quickly (unless they're completely torn). With a high ankle sprain, the ligament above the ankle, connecting the two shin bones, gets torn. This ligament typically takes longer to heal, and is easily aggravated. Also, there is a tough band of tissue connecting the bones as well, and if that gets torn, it's a much more difficult process.

The people in this thread claiming Gregory doesn't have other pass rush moves or strength or isn't polished with his moves obviously didn't watch his tape coming out of college. He played a lot stronger than his weight would lead you to believe which is obviously what some are going off of. He was also easily the best pure pass rusher from this class. His speed rush was lightning fast when he actually went on the snap and not first movement. His bull rush was very good for a 240 lb player and he could also use a counter move very effectively as well. His hand usage could use some improvement.

The reason he hasn't jumped off the screen is threefold. 1.) Injury. 2.) He's a rookie. 3.) He mainly plays pure pass downs because he has some improving to do on setting the edge in the NFL. Guys like Mincey, Lawrence and Hardy are muc more stout at the poa and get the nod in those situations. Stop making a big deal out of what you aren't seeing in a rookie, coming off injury and who is only playing 10 snaps a game.

Return to what form? He hasn't played in this league, he has no form yet. I think he's long with quickness and some quick twitch power. However if someone gets his hands on him it's all over for the most part. Get him in the weight room and let him add some functional strength. He should be a real good player in a few years.

You may be right about hiding in the weeds, I still fully believe in the wisdom of crowds. I am always proud to read some of these discussions/emotions. I love seeing the different perspectives that do not ever appear to myself when considering a situation and frequently have a light bulb turn on.
