Texas A&M WR Mike Evans said he is hearing more and more that he could be a top-10 pick in the draft.
With some prospects, we might question this revelation, but in Evans' case, we've been hearing the same thing. Evans has seen his draft stock soar since the season ended and he dispelled whispers that his athleticism wasn't up to snuff for an elite No. 1 WR. At 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, Evans ran a 4.53 forty at the combine. It would be a shock if he slipped past the Giants at No. 12.Mar 5 - 4:16 PM

He and Dez could be effective together, but the thing is this team has glaring weaknesses on defense, and that's putting it mildly. If Donald is gone, there are other D linemen that will be available to help this team. The Frederick pick was a smart one last draft, even though some screamed about it. It gave us an upgrade immediately right where we needed it. We need a similar kind of upgrade on the D line. You don't win in this league without a good pass rush. I for one am tired of the historically bad defense and don't want to go another season with it. I suspect many other Cowboys fans feel the same.

Well..

I don't think we are set at LBer yet..

even a pass-rushing outside LBer who could start..

would be OK at 16.

That actually addresses 2 needs for us..with one pick.

Not to mention the need for depth immediately until we know how Carter and Lee are going to becoming back from down years.

So I don't think it has to be a certain position..

its best player at the 5. or so positions we need immediate upgrades for.

I would much rather take defense, preferably along the line but I wouldn't hate Evans because he and Dez would be ridiculous together. If something happens and we don't like the defensive guys available I think I'd be happy with a big group of guys. Donald, Dix, Pryor, Evans, Martin, Jeringan, Mack(won't be here), Ealy, Manziel(won't be here), Hageman. Lots of nice options potentially.

It would help if they picked up a DL in FA like Melton but the cap is up in the air right now AND if guys like Crawford and Bass are healthy AND if the Spencer market sucks and we get him back cheap.

Yes, we have needs at linebacker too. In general we're hurting way more on defense than on offense. At 16 we ought to pick the best defensive player available except for corners, especially if that player is a D-lineman. Then in the 2nd round we should continue to focus on the defense. In the 3rd we should probably also stick to defense. It might go something like 1st - DT, 2nd DE, 3rd LB, or that order could be reversed with the same positions, or perhaps a safety is in there instead. The only way I consider drafting an offensive player in the first three rounds is if someone outstanding falls to us such as Johnny Football, if they've examined him closely and are confident he's who he's cracked up to be.

Some might be screaming that our corners got burned last season, but I strongly suspect that's because of our atrociously poor pass rush. You could have a clone of Deion Sanders at each corner position and a clone of Darren Woodson at each safety position and they would get burned if the pass rush is crappy. I'm not saying Carr and Claiborne are as good as Sanders was, but upgrade this pass rush and let's see how they do.

What if the next player on your board you're rich at that position, and the following player on your board is an extreme area of need?

just a question.

In the NFL there is no such thing as being rich at a position... I've seen injuries take out a certain position thought to be "stacked".

Marinelli does not use LBs as pass rushers other than just a very small number of blitzes per game.

If the Cowboys draft a LB, he needs to be great in coverage. His pass rushing ability is not a significant issue.

Now if they draft a college 3-4 pass rushing LB that can convert to DE, that's a different story.

It's not like WR is destined to be placed among our highest priorities whenever draft day comes around. Mike Evans would be a fine catch for anyone placing a high priority on a WR of his caliber. It all depends upon whether or not those in charge in the war room deem it desirable to take someone who might be rated equal or slightly lower. Perhaps one may represent a greater need, such as DT, DE, FS, OG or OLB. One of those might well be considered to be a higher priority due to his being deemed a more pressing weakness. The WR position promises to be a very deep commodity in the upcoming draft. It's just not like it has be be Mike Evans or bust, with so many other prospects that should prove more than capable.

Saw a group of mocks that had him going at 9 to Beefalo and 12 to the Giants.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/mock-drafts

Yet there was one where he went to the Ravens after Dallas.

So what if...

Donald is gone.

Zach martin is gone.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is gone.

And Mike slips.

Can you imagine the offense with Evans and Dez, and TWill coming out of the slot?

I know, this team needs defense. And there could be plenty of time to fill that need. Especially if Ware hauls butt and they save a ton of money. FA could fill a need and maybe even retain Hatcher.

I really like offense, but that is beside the point.

So, any interest? Or is this a trade down scenario, which pouts my feet to sleep because of the notion you get two god players instead of one.

OK..

Still see the need at LBer though.

Lee and Carter have proven not to be a lock and Carter may end up not being the answer..

Maybe he just needs more time in the system like the rest of them.

But if he fades again and Lee does his usual swan song with an injury..

We are right back to being toast at the positions.

Just saying.

and there is no team that's stacked in every position. you have to pick and choose your poison. you might be stacked in one position and not get injuries and get injuries to a thin position. and there is a bit of luck involved.
