Morris hires Bates as Bucs’ defensive coordinator
New Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris has been compared to the Steelers’ Mike Tomlin. Now Morris’ first significant hire is the kind that Tomlin has.
Just as Tomlin has been able to lean on veteran defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, Morris now can do the same with his defensive coordinator, Jim Bates.
Morris hired Bates on Thursday, giving Tampa Bay’s coaching staff the type of veteran presence it needs. Bates is the former Broncos and Dolphins defensive coordinator who temporarily served as Miami’s head coach.
Many names had been speculated on as Tampa Bay’s defensive coordinator, but Bates was the man the Bucs wanted all along. Thursday, they got their man.
Bates name was mentioned here. Several times.lqmac1;2596328 said:What the hell does Tampa's DC have to do with this article
was he a guy that was used to the 3-4 D?Hostile;2596332 said:Bates name was mentioned here. Several times.
More of a 4-3 guy, but when has that ever stopped fans form recognizing the name of a former coach?ctrous25;2596338 said:was he a guy that was used to the 3-4 D?
So what your saying is hes an upgrade from Brian Stewart?:laugh2:Hostile;2596345 said:More of a 4-3 guy, but when has that ever stopped fans form recognizing the name of a former coach?
I like Jim Bates and think he could coach 3-4, because his specialty is LBs.

It appears that Herring is still with the team as well (for now, at least).
I don't want him to. I want a solid choice at DC in case we need to fire Wade mid season and hire Shanahan. I'd rather cover our bases than say "well, we can't fire him because we'd have no one to call the Defense."slick325;2596377 said:I want Wade to retain defensive playcalling duties. Like an article in the Zone said earlier, it is not uncommon for offensive minded coaches to call the plays (Reid, Gruden, Shanahan, Holmgren and Zorn), therefore, what is the problem with Wade doing it himself?
If he needs to hire someone to have the title in name only, then it doesn't make sense. They have enough former defensive coordinators on staff to ease Wade's burden in planning for each opponent.
What does he have to lose? He is in a contract year and probably won't be back even with a SB victory. I think he should go all out this season.
Wade should be the DC.

Get me a DC.

IF Wade got fired mid-season, Campo no doubt, would take over the play-calling duties.
You just made my point for me.skinsscalper;2596433 said:If Wade gets fired mid-season, Shanahan won't be coming in until the following year anyway. If Jerry goes with Wade to start the year, I believe, Wade will be here until the end of the year.

Campo has never called plays in a 3-4 scheme.skinsscalper;2596454 said:I'm not sure just any DC we bring in is going to be any better than Campo. Campo was actually an outstanding DC for us. That guy got more out of nothing than I've seen out of anyone. I think Garrett would be named interim head coach and Shanahan would be looking for real estate in Texas.
Hostile;2596260 said:Herring is staying. Oklahoma State hired a coach from Miami to be their DC.
My source at Oklahoma State said they are not sure why Herring waffled after his name surfaced.
I speculated that meant he was likely being offered the DC job here. The Campo rumors were pure stir up crap reports. Campo has 1 year of experience in a 3-4 and it isn't working with LBs and D-line.
I believe it will come down to him and Greg Manusky if we can pry him away from the 49ers.
Hostile;2596459 said:Campo has never called plays in a 3-4 scheme.
Which is why I said Reggie Herring or Greg Manusky. I'd love to have Manusky. I wanted him to come with Wade from that staff.skinsscalper;2596485 said:Yeah, I get that angle, but it doesn't mean that he doesn't understand pressure or defense entirely. The whole 3-4, 4-3 debate didn't preclude Jim Bates from many people's list either. I'm not saying that Campo is our best option, I'm just saying that any Joe Schmoe that we bring in wouldn't be calling the plays either unless Wade gets fired mid-season (which I don't see happening) and there's no guarantee that the guy we bring in has ever had any experience calling plays in a 3-4 defense either, let alone Wade's 3-4.
The well is a little dry at 3-4 masterminds at this point.
