Anybody notice how quickly Marinelli manages to evaluate DL?

I just wonder if we will have as much whining in the offseason about the DL as we have had for the OL over the last year or 2......probably not.

Of course we will. It's the obvious next area to address, so we'll have people complaining about it they same way they did *while* we were in the process of addressing the OL, as if it weren't obviously already in progress.

Call me a complainer, but the offensive line still will require some work for next year.

The DL required work this offseason as well, but the braintrust saw no issues there to worry about.

The OL could use another young interior player to replace Arkin/Waters. If that's what you're expecting, I agree. The point is, it's a process addressing holes in the roster, and, when the team's in the middle of aggressively addressing them, there's little point in complaining they didn't do more, or do it faster. It's not like we weren't also rebuilding the entire defensive secondary and addressing skill positions on offense at the same time.

We obviously had setup the roster so that this coming offseason would require draft and salary cap resources to bolster the DL. With Spencer, Hatcher, and Ratliff all expected to hit VFA at the same time. We probably sign at least one quality veteran (a significant but relatively reasonable one, on the order of an extension for Hatcher) and spend one of the top two picks, and probably a later round pick on DL bodies for next season. On top of getting Bass and Crawford back. It's important, but it's part of the overall plan for the roster; I'm just not looking forward to people complaining about what's obviously going to happen between now and when it, predictably, does.

OL wise, a young guard and a swing tackle candidate is needed. I'm not high on Jermey Parnell.

DL wise, they could need as many as five new bodies (that number could shrink if Crawford returns to full strength). I think Ben Bass is largely a JAG that they can do much better than.

I like Bass. There are roles for guys like him and Hayden on any team. Spencer, Ratliff, Hatcher....what other players you looking to replace there? With Crawford and Bass coming back, you're really looking at one high pick, and a vet from someplace, and then you're just trying to upgrade your backups wherever you can. I'm all for upgrading the depth as we go.

I'm hopeful about Nevis.

I am as well, think they have found something in him. Guy really showed up last week and apparently getting into better shape by the minute.

Not giving up on Rayford quite yet either. He seemed to play a lot inside early on, which is clearly not a position he is suited for. However, if Ware doesn't play this week and Rayford rarely sees the field I think it will be an indictment on him and his time in Dallas will be short.

They need a bookend to Ware, an explosive 3 technique, at least one more DT, and at least one other end (that can do more than just hold the fort, especially with Ware's recent injury ledger.)

To me, I would not expect Spencer or Hatcher to return, and would like to see upgrades to Wilber, Hayden, Nevis and Wynn. Hayden, to me, is a good rotation DT option, but not a starter for a good team. Bass, to me, is a tweener who comes up short at either position (DT or DE). Nevis as a 4th DT is fine. Wilber lacks the base strength to be a real factor at DE, and is too much of a liability against the run.

Dang, you're hard to please. You make a DL that ranks 4th in the NFL in sacks sound like crap.

This DL is very average. With the amount of snaps that Hatcher and Ware are logging/going to log, they will be completely worn down by years end. Attrition is already killing them, it will only be worse by years end.

Even without the injuries, they need better talent in this group.

Next man up, Jason Vega, signed to practice squad Sept 2nd, promoted to the real thing Oct 18th. Here's hoping you capitalize on the opportunity you've been working for your entire adult life!

If hatcher has a double digit sacks this season, you still expect Jerry not to re-sign him? Hayden is a very active trash can full of dirt which fits the 1 tech. May need a backup but Crawford, Bass and Nevis will all compete to rotate at 3 tech. Selvie, Rayford, Jones, Vega and Wynn will compete to play opposite Ware. Selvie if he can stay healthy will exceed Spencer's career average in sacks IMO.

Wilber is not an every down DE but works on passing downs and was clutch when Ware went out. And he can still improve while he learns the position. The DL may not be filled with first rounders but you are not appreciating their production and Marinelli's impact.
