I hope they classify Turpin as a specialist, to include Dennis Houston as a WR. We sorely need a capable possession-type WR. :flagwave:

When asked how he was able to gain Dak Prescott’s trust, dating back in spring work, and become such a big part of the offense early, Houston offered this:

“It was just knowing my plays,” said Houston. “It wasn’t, ‘I need to get Dak on my side.’ It was just more, I just need to make sure I’m in the right position and everything just came with it.”

Houston isn’t taking first team reps because he’s the fastest, tallest, strongest, or most athletic. He’s there because he’s the most dependable and most trustworthy. One could say, he’s this year’s Cedrick Wilson.

when asked about his study habits, Houston had this to say:

“You gotta put hours into it, cause it’s your job and if you want to make a livelihood out of it you gotta be serious with it so it was a lot of hours.”

Dallas Cowboys WR standout Dennis Houston: "I'm just a cool dude." (sportdfw.com)

This is said every year, and they end up on the practice squad.
Agreed. However, Houston is flashing with the 1s. He could definitely play on a team like Chicago, Jacksonville, Green Bay, Kansas City etc.

Don't we get a certain number of protected practice squad players or do they have to clear waivers first?

They must clear waivers first. They may have changed the protection rules, not sure. I think it is that they can protect 6 players so many days before a game. But it is not an all season long protection.

Agreed, it all depends on what they do with Gallup and Washington. They either have to cut or put Washington on the IR.

I am not sure, but certain vet players are not subject to waivers when released. Depends on how many years in the league.
They could cut him, then bring him back then put him on IR so he would be short term IR. Or maybe since he won't be claimed on waivers they can do something there.

Or they take a chance, release Houston or another marginal player such as an OL or DL, move Washington to IR, bring back that marginal player.

He’s just caught in balls long, contested.
We have to keep 6 WR their good enough
Gallup will not count against the 53 on cut day.
  • They kept 6 and occasionally 7 for portions of seasons the last few years.
    • 1. CeeDee
    • 2. Noah Brown
    • 3. Tolbert
    • 4. Turpin
    • 5. Fehoko
    • 6. Dennis Houston
    • 7. James Washington - On the 53 for 24 hours then moved to IR.

    • Brandon Smith
    • Vasher - Started strong but appears to have faded.
    • Jaquarii Robinson
    • Ty Fryfogle

They have to clear waivers on the cut to 53 day.
  • Note:
    • Players injured after camp started must be on the 53 for cut day, then moved to IR the next day in order to be eligible to return during the season.
    • Vested veterans do not have to clear waivers (until after the trade deadline).

  • Work-Around Example:
    • Cut a vested veteran such as ST player CJ Goodwin.
    • Keep WR Washington on the 53 for cut day.
    • Move Washington to IR the following day.
    • Re-sign Goodwin.
      • They have done this with Goodwin in the past.
    • Other potential cut/re-sign veterans: DT Watkins. QB Rush. TE Sprinkle. DE Basham.

  • OT Waletzko will also be a candidate for IR.

  • If they sign a veteran swing-tackle, it's possible they do it the day after the cut to 53.
    • i.e. After other players are moved to IR.

Fryogle was waived injured on the 1st cut down.
But your list of the top 7 is pretty spot on.

I think there is a decent chance he isn't on initial roster.
WRs are not in high demand so you can likely sneak him back after IR'ing/PUPing guys.

excellent stuff as per usual.

I think the vet Swing Tackle (current FA not late cut) and also OBJ if they have any interest would be post cutdown moves possibly week 2 or 3 even.
