The Free Agency was going slow as we were not signing any big name FA's. We did not get a deal done, YET, for Dez so we tag him. Murray goes to the Eagles.

I am not complaining about Murray leaving. I applaud them for not overpaying and finding themselves in similar situations like they have in the past.

I only bring up some of these things to build up the story and some of the mood.

We see Defensive FA's keep getting signed and people are worried we are running out of mid tier type players that the Cowboys seem to be targeting on getting with a mid tier price.

So Greg Hardy is still sitting there.

I have said in the past he was the one FA I did not want to sign. I said so due to his off the field issues, the possibility of him missing games and ALSO that he was the top DE in this Free Agency period and a Top defensive player in this FA with possibly Suh and Reevis being the only bigger ones so with that means I figured he would command a larger amount of money than I was comfortable the team giving considering his issues.

This is NOT another thread to discuss those issues...I only mentioned them as I thought he would be out of our Price Range and for that kind of Coin I would not want someone with issues.

With all of that said...Word starts to filter in that the Cowboys are interested in him. And frankly what we need most on Defense is someone who can get to the QB and he is by far the best FA out there for getting to the QB.

For a day or so it is just general statements that the Cowboys might have interest. There are stories/tweets that their is a mystery team that is seriously interested but only speculations of who that team could by and the cowboys could be one of them so the fandom interest in the story grows.

A couple of days ago the twitterverse tells us the cowboys are bringing in Greg Hardy in a few hours and there are possibly negotiations going on.

This ignites a board fire and everyone is getting interested (whether people like him or not, whether people want him or not) people are interested in the news and threads are growing and growing.

Two days we go through this with some words leaking out he has signed only for those to be from bogus sources so we keep on watching the twitterverse for any nugget of information no matter how trivial and how speculative. Even Whattaburger gets into the whole thing and possibly gains some free publicity.

Then it finally breaks...Hardy Has signed.

Here comes the anti climatic part....

It is only for one year for over $10 million.

Some start saying hey....Even if it is one year we can franchise him the next year and at least have him for two years. We also find out that none of money is guaranteed and most of it is incentive based money.

So we are happy we got a great financial deal and can have him up to two years if we wish.

Then news leaks out that the contract contains a clause that the cowboys can not use any tags on him including the aforementioned Franchise tag.

So basically we only have the right to one year of his services and there is a strong (I said strong not 100% chance just for Burm) that he will miss some games. So it looks like we might not even get him for a full season.

Not complaining about all of this at all.

Just seems like after such a big build up, after all of those threads, after all of the posts, after all of the excitement leading up to it...

Today it just seems like it was a bit anti-climatic.

But...that is just me and maybe I am the only one.

Never. Each day brings new opportunities and it is no different for me concerning the Cowboys. Priorities in order, of course. ;)

Unless something like an AP trade and sign happens...the FA off season excitement is pretty much over.

But the anti-climatic part is not the off season as a whole really...it is more about all the excitement the last few days concerning Greg Hardy and now that is over and feels a little anticlimactic.

Yes. I feel the same way. The odds that Hardy is here for not even a full season are very good and that sucks.

I was going to line my face during games this year. Not anymore.

You can still line your face up....with tire marks.

I don't care about Greg Hardy; he is just a chocolate morsel in my chocolate chip cookie (Cowboys). It is the cookie I look forward to, not the ingredients.

I have gotten to the point where I don't get too emotionally involved with the free agency and draft periods anymore. I have to trust the front office has done their jobs in researching if X player is worth being on the roster. I feel the front office and the coaching staff are marching to the same beat, and after seeing them let DeMarco walk, it just reinforced it. I feel that S. Jones, W. McClay and J. Garrett have a plan on what they want to do to win a Super Bowl. They are following the plan and are executing it to the best of their abilities with the anchor of he bad contracts that were dealt out in the past. Will this lead to a Super Bowl??? That remains to be seen, but at leas now there is a plan and not some haphazard decisions being made because of the trends in the league or some emotional tie to an aging player. All in all, I think we did ok in free agency and now can go into the draft with possibly picking the BPA on our board. I think if we do what we are supposed to do as an organization, anti-climatic is a good feeling. It means we are making smart decisions and not looking for just sizzle.

I get it. Kinda like the post-Christmas blues. In my case the let-down is perhaps a touch more severe, since I was hoping to get this guy locked up long-term, so it's like I got almost exactly what I asked Santa for, but not quite.

If we sign Ro McClain, get a long term deal done with Dez....then it will make it much better.
But I understand what you mean being anti-climatic.....but also pretty much what was expected in a way.

I did feel the same way..the 1 year deal with the prospect of losing some of those games deflated me a bit. After reading some of his twitter comments when someone asked him if he would stay longer than a year...he said something like "would love to, if Jerry will have me". So it seems he is really excited to be here and hopefully he does his part and Jerry steps up and coats his pockets before he can hit FA.

That is the hope, this guy is such a game changer that I really hate the prospect of losing him after a year...

if we get Rolando back for next year, that'll do. I wouldn't mind getting Spencer back as well. Since Hardy is only a one year deal, DE is still a position to consider for best player available at 27.

I think it would have been worse had we wined and dined him and they had not reached an agreement.

I do find it funny that did wine and dine him, for two days and we got that incentive deal knocked out only? Seems like that could have been done on a cocktail napkin at DFW airport. For the time they took I thought this was going to be a multi year mega deal.

All I can say, is we have him, and if we somehow reach/win the SB this year it will make the one year rental worth every penny!

The one thing that really bothers me is the looming suspension. I just have a feeling the NFL is chomping at the bit to screw and he'll get 6 or 8 games.

No , He is the one guy I wanted. We will have the best opportunity
of any team to sign him long term if we want.
What if he only gets 7-8 sacks next year because he only plays
in a limited amount of games because of suspension?
His value may actually come down.
I hope he goes nuclear and helps take us all the way.
Now lets get that rookie feature back in the 2nd round and keep this train going.

DE is a position that you would pay to retain when the player is only 26 years old. I doubt if he performs the way I suspect he will with all those incentives, that Dallas will let him walk the way they did with Demarco at the running back position.

We're just now kicking the tires on this one. In 2015 we will be taking it for a test drive. In 2016 we will be the proud owners of a Pro Bowl DE.

I agree with all of that but I feel exactly as the OP stated. I too thought the long negotiation meant a longer term deal. That we were locking up an elite pass rusher in his prime for several years. There's just no way to think that and then see what was actually signed and not be disappointed.

I can't feel anticlimactic when we sign an elite pass rusher. And I honestly don't really care about Murray leaving. I think the guys we have and may draft will be more than up to the task of filling his role at least decently.
