If Hardy plays up to his ability and stays out of trouble, the Cowboys will sign him long term. The home team always has the edge with a free agent... particularly when it is the Cowboys. He won't give a home team discount but if Dallas is in the neighborhood, he will stay where he is.

I hope you're right but I'm not nearly as sanguine as you appear to be. Assuming all goes as planned (Hardy stays out of trouble, is productive, etc.) there's little reason for Hardy not to test the market after this year and you can be sure Rosenhaus will be in his ear letting him know that. Unless Jerry is prepared to make a preemptive offer, and the team's recent fiscal restraint suggests he'll be slow to do so, that eliminates the only advantage the Cowboys have: the ability to negotiate with him during the current league year.

But by then Hardy deal will be almost done and he will be close to 30, then you give Dlaw his money and Hardy walks.

Hardy is already a beast, Dlaw has potential but it's not a lock

That's true. It will be an interesting chess match this year to see what they do. I think they've shown they are not the same ole' Cowboys as in years past, or Hardy would have gotten a 4 or 5 year deal.

How funny. I woke up today and thought, well nothing could top the last 3 days. Almost a little depressed that the crescendo is over

Yeah, but at least I can get more done at work now. :)

No , He is the one guy I wanted. We will have the best opportunity
of any team to sign him long term if we want.

What if he only gets 7-8 sacks next year because he only plays
in a limited amount of games because of suspension?
His value may actually come down.
I hope he goes nuclear and helps take us all the way.
Now lets get that rookie feature back in the 2nd round and keep this train going.

My fear is him having another big season and Carolina thinking, "Man, I would love to have this guy back". He seemed to love it there, the fans love him as well; even after the incident. I think he would certainly take into serious consideration signing with them again.

But he could also love it here in Big D as well, this is America's team; a place fit for a man with his personality. Seriously, this guy is a character; and not in a bad way. He has that comedic side to him that some would consider being a egotistical *******, but he's far more tongue-in-cheek.

Why, sanguine is my middle name.

Seriously though, if he plays like he did in Carolina, I think Dallas would pretty much pay the going rate for him, unless someone just gives him a stupid offer. Like I mentioned before, Dallas has no qualms about paying an edge rusher big if he is an elite player. The one issue is his off the field concerns. If he convinces the Cowboys he is not a problem, in addition to playing like he did in Carolina, then they'll pay the man his money.

I have a "let's just get to the start of the season already" feeling in me. I really don't care who Dallas signs, let's just get to the start of the season already!!!

I see the Hardy signing as a win-win-win situation for Dallas.

1) The contract base is low and mostly incentive based; if he reaches all incentives, it's pricey but also likely means Dallas got themselves a monster passrusher. If he's suspended or doesn't meet all incentive goals, it's cheaper..

2) PR-wise, if Hardy stays clean and refocuses on football, Dallas helped give a guy a 2nd chance and he can be a model for how to handle these players. PR-wise, if Hardy screws up again, he likely is suspended for most (if not all) of the year and it's all on him because Dallas tried to give him a 2nd chance. (AND, Dallas doesn't incur the huge cap hit)

3) Signing Hardy means Dallas can potentially draft a DE/passrusher in the 1st round that doesn't have the passrush hopes hurled onto his shoulders. this gives him time to adjust to the NFL, develop, and learn from two good pass rushers in Hardy and Mincey. It would mean that Dallas goes into 2016 with two potentially solid, young DEs to anchor a young defensive line that can be together for a few years.

As for Murray leaving.... again, we all knew before the season that it was likely going to be DeMarco or Dez. While we all wanted both, I think most would rather have Dez. I wanted DeMarco to stay, but not if it was going to cost Dallas money that could go toward building up the defense.

Knowing that Stephen may be taking a greater leadership role in the front office means I'm not as worried about potentially bad moves (read: Jerry decisions)

I agree with all of that but I feel exactly as the OP stated. I too thought the long negotiation meant a longer term deal. That we were locking up an elite pass rusher in his prime for several years. There's just no way to think that and then see what was actually signed and not be disappointed.

I dont get it either. He was the one free agent I wanted badly... Just asking everyone thoughts, no long-term contract because we did not have any cap space without restructuring other player's contracts? I am not very good at understanding how the salary cap is manipulated.

The cap wasn't a factor in terms of they couldn't make it fit in the future. The Cowboys just aren't content with committing to a player like Hardy long term by handing him a ton of guaranteed money.

...Today it [Hardy situation] just seems like it was a bit anti-climatic.

But...that is just me and maybe I am the only one.

Well, I think you have to agree the Hardy situation and signing with the Cowboys was much more climatic than the supposed Dez Walmart video.:)

The Free Agency was going slow as we were not signing any big name FA's. We did not get a deal done, YET, for Dez so we tag him. Murray goes to the Eagles.

I am not complaining about Murray leaving. I applaud them for not overpaying and finding themselves in similar situations like they have in the past.

I only bring up some of these things to build up the story and some of the mood.

We see Defensive FA's keep getting signed and people are worried we are running out of mid tier type players that the Cowboys seem to be targeting on getting with a mid tier price.

So Greg Hardy is still sitting there.

I have said in the past he was the one FA I did not want to sign. I said so due to his off the field issues, the possibility of him missing games and ALSO that he was the top DE in this Free Agency period and a Top defensive player in this FA with possibly Suh and Reevis being the only bigger ones so with that means I figured he would command a larger amount of money than I was comfortable the team giving considering his issues.

This is NOT another thread to discuss those issues...I only mentioned them as I thought he would be out of our Price Range and for that kind of Coin I would not want someone with issues.

With all of that said...Word starts to filter in that the Cowboys are interested in him. And frankly what we need most on Defense is someone who can get to the QB and he is by far the best FA out there for getting to the QB.

For a day or so it is just general statements that the Cowboys might have interest. There are stories/tweets that their is a mystery team that is seriously interested but only speculations of who that team could by and the cowboys could be one of them so the fandom interest in the story grows.

A couple of days ago the twitterverse tells us the cowboys are bringing in Greg Hardy in a few hours and there are possibly negotiations going on.

This ignites a board fire and everyone is getting interested (whether people like him or not, whether people want him or not) people are interested in the news and threads are growing and growing.

Two days we go through this with some words leaking out he has signed only for those to be from bogus sources so we keep on watching the twitterverse for any nugget of information no matter how trivial and how speculative. Even Whattaburger gets into the whole thing and possibly gains some free publicity.

Then it finally breaks...Hardy Has signed.

Here comes the anti climatic part....

It is only for one year for over $10 million.

Some start saying hey....Even if it is one year we can franchise him the next year and at least have him for two years. We also find out that none of money is guaranteed and most of it is incentive based money.

So we are happy we got a great financial deal and can have him up to two years if we wish.

Then news leaks out that the contract contains a clause that the cowboys can not use any tags on him including the aforementioned Franchise tag.

So basically we only have the right to one year of his services and there is a strong (I said strong not 100% chance just for Burm) that he will miss some games. So it looks like we might not even get him for a full season.

Not complaining about all of this at all.

Just seems like after such a big build up, after all of those threads, after all of the posts, after all of the excitement leading up to it...

Today it just seems like it was a bit anti-climatic.

But...that is just me and maybe I am the only one.

Geez! Thanks a lot Mr. Buzz kill. Too much complaining going on with that post. I'm out. Thanks a lot Brain.

But...that is just me and maybe I am the only one.

I felt the same way. It was probably just the circumstances of how the past few days played out, him being in Dallas for two days and all the buzz on the forum that we'd have him for maybe a few years, anxiety that he'd leave town without a contract, giddiness of the Charles Haley-ness of the whole thing....then a one year deal.

I completely get it from Hardy's point of view, to take the bet on himself that he blows it up this year and gets his monster contract next year. And I get it from the Cowboys point of view why they (and apparently every other team in the league) weren't willing YET to give him the long contract with the guaranteed $$. And if he's a rent-a-player for a year, I'm very glad he's OUR rent-a-player. But when the deal was announced, I definitely felt a let-down that it was just the one year thing, after all that just-like-the-90's-again dreaming and anticipation.

I hope the story starts to leak out about the negotiations. It'd be interesting to hear if both sides were actually trying to get something long-term hammered out and just couldn't agree on how to do it, or if the entire two days were just working on the structure of that one-year deal.

But I've gotta say I'm now really, really, really looking forward to seeing the Rent-a-Kraken in action.

I bet the Cowboyszone server does not have smoke coming off of the disk drives as it did yesterday.

I will also bet zoners are getting a lot more work down today, productivity is up.

I think hardy wasn't going to sign long term. He wants to hit free agency next season again to cash in big time. I think he feels he can show everybody he still is good then get a big pay day.

I'm ok with that because he will be motivated even more this season

I would be a lot more excited about the offseason if we actually LOCKED UP some of our players. We have to go through this ordeal AGAIN next season since Dez isn't under contract and Hardy is only here for one year.

At first the one year deal bothered me. But after some thought, I think he is going to show our coaches how valuable he is to this defense and Stephon is going to find a way to lock him up. We are in the best situation to do so.

He is going to have a year. Suspened for 8 or not. He will come in and give us a push into the playoffs...

We are going to fall hard for him , after seeing him rip off Wilsons Head or smacking down Eli.

And then, he is going to go away the following year,,,

Its a tease!
