i thought they were too. nothing to special about them

I don't disagree. The first two were decent, but not great.

I guess I'm coming from across the aisle as Roger Ebert on this topic.

The expenses of marriage and fatherhood put the big squeeze on my comic book buying. Still, I have literally thousands of them (mostly in storage). DC and Marvel were my main favorites.

In regards to the first two Spider-Man movies, Sam Raimi nailed every character he put on the screen. It's like he cut them out of the books themselves and pasted them in each movie. The theme, feel and continuity of both movies are carbon copies of the books. That's my interpretation of a great comic book adaptation--namely, how well can the director mimic the book on the big screen successfully. I would call Raimi a genius, but his third picture was so contrived that he lost a big chunk of respect from me. He should have quit after number two.

Nolan's rendition of the Dark Knight in Batman Begins is the only movie on the same level as Raimi's first two movies in my opinion. I stood and applauded the movie at its end. Great, great work which I hope that Nolan will carry over and/or improve upon in his sequel.

Man, how could you people like the Spawn movie. That was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Badly acted, badly scripted, bad everything. The only thing that was halfway decent were the FX, for the time anyway. Now they would suck.

The Hulk movie was a disaster but it should have been amazing. The film was based on Peter David's rendition of the Hulk implying that Banner was affected as a child which woud have enabled him to survive being doused by Gamma rays and the Hulk is psychodynamically inspired. That's much more interesting than a wimpy scientist being bombarded with Gamma rays and surviving for unknown reasons. I thought the film was well cast too. The problem with the film was Ang Lee's horrible directing and the use of a CGI Hulk and the lack of a villain.

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one out there who was disappointed in Superman Returns. After the introduction of special effects in The Matrix movies, I was geared up to be blown away by SR, but wasn't.

I'm interested in seeing DC finally put out a big screen hit that's doesn't have Batman in its title. Even with movies like Hulk and Electra not making the grade, the Marvel adaptations have been very entertaining for me, mostly.

I wonder who would play WONDER Woman? If it's someone with Lynda Carter's (70's) bod and Lucy (Xena) Lawless' acting aura (sure, she's not the best actress out there, but I love her anyway), that would be a great combination. Whoever's making the film better not do some stupid typecasting like Reese Witherspoon for the Amazon Princess.

What's up East'

Did you have a chance to watch the animated Superman Doomsday? I saw it; when you see it, give me your take on it. Joss Whedon is no longer tagged to direct the film. Whedon had Carisma Carpenter of Buffy' fame high on his list. Since Whedon has been removed, the search starts all over. I do know that everyone wants to pay homage to Lynda Carter so all the nominees that I've heard is a brunette and many are ethnic or have some type of mixed heritage to provide the exotic look that capture an Amazonian

Funny that you would ask, JW. After taking my wife out to eat yesterday afternoon, I hit several stores looking for a copy of Doomsday, but didn't have much luck. Looking for a copy almost made me miss the start of LSU/Florida. Man, I was po'd! :D I may order it online if I can't find it locally, but when I do watch it, I'll give you my take.

I'm a big Buffy fan, so I wouldn't have mind seeing Charisma cast as WW, but I'm not so sure she would've had the acting chops to pull off the character. I really liked how where WB took the WW character in the animated JL/JLU series and hoped that someone could adopt a similar characterization in a live action film.

If they do go ethnic for the Amazonian angle, I'm cool with the idea AS LONG AS it's not Jennifer Lopez. Please don't let it be J Lo. The producers would try to work in a romantic sub-plot between her and Batman or something. Yuck. :) Monica Bellucci has the skill and body to pull it off, but it's a safer bet that someone younger will land the role. Rosario Dawson might be a stretch... Paz Vega popped into my mind, too...

I almost bought it myself but I read bad reviews so I saw it on Netflix and I'm glad I didn't buy it but it was still entertaining. Check out Target if you haven't already. They usually have multiple copies because its more expensive. Wal-Mart sells out pretty fast. No i don't think they will choose J-LO. :) I think they were thinking more along the lines of Kelly Hu. I would have liked Charisma Carpenter too because I too am a fun of Joss Whedon's work.

Thanks for the heads up. I totally forgot about Target yesterday.

Kelly Hu, huh? Interesting choice. I wouldn't mind seeing her in another comic adaptation after the way her Lady Deathstrike character was offed in X2. Her character was kicking some Wolverine butt before she bit the bullet. Mind you, I didn't want her to win the fight, but the way she was killed off was just wrong. :)

I understand your view point. I didn't think the Spiderman films were that entertaining since they were practically a direct copy of the Ultimate Spiderman comics and the plots were too predictable. That being said, the first 2 films were extremely well made. The films were character driven which was a first for a comic themed film with the exception of the first Superman movie. That's why they were so well received. However, I agree that they could be a tad bit boring (this is also another reason I enjoyed Superman II much more than the original because you need that slight bit of cheese)

Superman Returns was a disaster and I'm suprised it wasn't received more harshly. It was just a bad knock off of the original set according to modern times. I love Kevin Spacey and I thought he would bring something new to the character and make him more deadly. Instead, I felt Spacey was doing his best Gene Hackman impersonation. Brandon Routh was a statue the entire film and brought no sense of character or humanity. He was a Christopher Reeve look-alike without the soul Reeve portrayed. And then Kate Bosworth looked far too young to portray a seasoned and sophisticated reporter for the comic's version of the New York Times. For petesake, she was playing a high school girl in Who Wants to Meet Tad Hamilton just a year earlier.

My take exactly. I love the theory of the movie, I just don't think it was executed properly. I am not a Hulk fan, but the idea behind the movie was very good.

In spite of the goofy CGI Hulk and the odd directing style, what finally did it for me was the ultra-mega-bad-guy-evil-genie that Nick Nolte turned into with ultimate powers. Ooooookay.

Well, JW, Superman/Doomsday was interesting, to say the least.

Doomsday himself was protrayed very accurately--namely, a pure, cold-blooded killing machine. I take my hat off to the producer in that regard.

Kal-El was done very well too, but they could've drawn him a little less chiseled. It made him look more 50's ish or Roger Kirby like.

I really liked what they did with the Luthor character. Brilliant, yet psychotic. What he did to Mercy was an unexpected, but refreshing twist.

Both Lane's and Martha Kent's characters were a bit subdued for my tastes.

Olsen, Perry and the rest were okay to borderline.

The action was first-rate. Heck, it was light years ahead of Superman Returns in my opinion. Superman hadn't flexed his muscles that well on video since the final episode of JLU in Destroyer.

Overall, I enjoyed the direction the movie took, but it did get away from the classic story. Superman vs. Doomsday was too short a fight for my tastes. The absence of other heroes from the original story was a huge departure which I didn't like, but it was done well enough. Finally, the death scene was done far better in the book itself.

All in all, I'll give the movie a solid B-.

Even though I didn't like the movie very well, I'm one of the few fans of the character who enjoyed Lee's use of the CGI Hulk. The very last thing I wanted to see was another Lou Ferrigmo (sp?) type selling me 'THE HULK'. In fact, the CGI Hulk was the only thing which mimicked the comic book character to a T.

The sequel is going to blow BEGINS out of the water -- and that's saying A LOT.

Of course, WB is undermining Nolan by including Batman (different version, different actor) in this JL film. Consequently, I'm afraid that Nolan, Bale and co. may walk after TDK.

So is this JLA nonsense going to happen, or is it speculation? I can't imagine a worse idea.

I'm really looking forward to the sequel. His protrayal of Bruce Wayne was even better than his acting as Batman in parts of the original movie, imo. One thing about DC and Marvel is that a good portion of the DC heroes have civilian alter egos and Bruce Wayne is one of the most complex of that comic universe. Bale version of Wayne was :hammer: .

That's the thing about Warner Brothers. They don't know a good thing when they have it and are constantly meddling in the directors'/producers' creativity. That's probably one of the reasons why there have been so few projects involving DC comic movie adaptations presented to WB in the past. No one wants to deal with their drama.

You're showing your age. :) The 'A' or 'America' in 'JLA' was dropped years ago. DC eventually found it too restrictive a title and went with the more universal sounding 'Justice League' instead. Good thing too. JLA kept reminding me of the SuperFriends way too often! :bang2:

I pay per viewed Superman Doomsday a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was alright. I never read the Death of Superman, so I could not base it against that.

The face on Supes was weird. Looked like he had mumps or something.

Isn't there going to be a Teen Titans movie? That seems like a smarter move. Lesser known characters with more of a team feel. Easier to pull off than using a bunch of well known, big name characters thrown together. Justice League works well as a 30 minute cartoon series. I don't think it would make a good movie.
