I don't care who they pick as long as that player will come in and help the team win. If they take one of the top 2 QBs, I'd be fine and view it as a smart long term investment recognizing the rarity of drafting in the top 5. If they go another direction, I hope they make a smart choice and that player contributes from day one and becomes a core Cowboy for the next 12 years. I just don't think it would be smart to use back to back 1st rounders on tweener DBs that both might end up a safety. That's a lot of draft capital put into a position that doesn't typically warrant that type of investment and if they both do end up at safety, I don't think you will be able to keep both when their contracts run out in back to back years.

actually you can because you got that 5th year option regardless in different years and the cap is still going up up up so by that time no telling what the salary cap will be if dallas wants them they will make it work

What I really want to know is what the plan is if we draft Ramsey. Lots of chatter that Jones is surely going to safety and staying there. Lots of chatter saying Ramsey would be a mediocre CB but amazing safety. I think run defense would suffer if one of em played SS. Great for nickel/dime obviously. Would someone sit out on most 1st and 2nd downs? Jones still plays both CB and S rather than focusing on one position? Our CB depth right now is complete trash and if we move Jones back to CB then our safety depth is even worse.

I think we'd see which one is the best fit at corner and the other would play free safety. I don't think, like some, that drafting Ramsey would put both Ramsey and Jones at safety.

I think we would cut Carr and our starting secondary would be Scandrick and Jones/Ramsey at corners and Church and Jones/Ramsey at safety.

This is the only reason I'm not that big on drafting Ramsey, because I simply don't want to swap out one player on the roster for another. I'd rather draft someone at a position where they fill a need. BUT if Ramsey is head and shoulders above those players in Dallas' opinion, then I'd take him because he could be a long-term answer at one of those spots.

In theory.

I can't think of a case where a team fielded a deep secondary where the two safeties were basically the same player, with similar skillsets.

Might be fun to watch for a while until the novelty wears off and opposing OCs exploit it.

Besides, I think the idea is to play Ramsey at CB. A mistake IMO, but there you go.

Agreed. I'm not even a proponent of taking Ramsey at 4. The athletic talent is evident but I just don't see a CB worthy of that pick. He needs a lot of improvement technically.

That's why I'd prefer Karl Joseph.

That tandem would easily be the most talented and athletic duo the team has ever put together at S. If both played to their potential, it would be fun to watch.

Maybe. In the early 70s, we had Cornell Green and Cliff Harris at Safety with Herb Adderley and Mel Renfro at Corners. That was a pretty darn good set of Safeties and a hell of a secondary.

I personally don't think Ramsey will be there at 4 anyway. If the Titans don't grab him then the Chargers sure will.

If your plan if for one to be a starting CB, then no problem but both seem better its for safety. That's my issue. Trade down for a true CB instead of hoping one of them can play CB would be my preferred route.

You underestimate safety play. Ravens had average corner play yet had a top d every year. Safeties affect the game more than corners imo

Yea, just make sure your free safety is Ed Reed and he's complimented by Ray Lewis, Suggs, and Ngata and your defense is good to go.

Question for me is that do we need to devote two first rounds picks in S positions? Shouldn't 1 be enough and get another guy in 2nd or 3rd round to complement Jones?
If Ramsey isn't even the top rated CB then why is he worth the 4th pick? Wouldn't it may more sense to take a top rated CB to pair with Jones at S?

This debate has been going on for a while . Ramsey is supposed to be a better athelete and csn play safety or CB. Most scouting reports have said that he is not the best CB in the draft, but he is popular on this board.

Depends on the scheme but yes, if you are playing a certain scheme like a Tampa 2, then the Safeties are way more important.
